My daughter got this for Christmas, they had them at Costco for a great price. I have always kind of wanted an ant habitat myself, so I decided I was going to live vicariously through her and get it for her so we could do it together. I really think the gel idea is neat because it makes it possible to see everything that's going on. I have enjoyed watching the ant's progress for the last two months. Here's a quick breakdown of our experience.

Setup (Jan 1st): This wasn't too bad. The instructions were very thorough and easy. I made the gel in the afternoon and then planted the seeds that night. It was easy to order the ants and did that the same day as set up. Then it was a waiting game for the ants to arrive and the plants to grow.

Arrival day (Jan 28th): Our ants came 3 weeks later, which worked out good because you want the plants to be pretty well established before introducing the ants. The ants came in a little plastic vial. I dropped them in and was surprised to see they were all alive. They immediately began exploring.

Next day: By the following morning they had started building a small tunnel. I was shocked that they got started so soon. We spent some time watching them and could see them actually use their front pincers to dig little pieces of gel out, then they carried it up the tunnel and dropped it in a pile and went down for more. These guys can carry things nearly their size! I could also see them trying to pull up the plants. They were pulling the small leaves off and trampling the plants. We watched them for quite awhile and had a great time talking about it and pointing things out to each other.

One month into it (Mar 3rd): The ants tunnels are getting pretty intricate. The plants never did grow up well after introducing the ants.

I have tried buying other ant habitats that have the gel in them but have always been disappointment by what we received. I found that one huge issue with other ant habits has to do with the gel. Many of them come with the gel pre-made, and it's pretty gross stuff. It also doesn't seem to be good for or appeal to the ants. We've been through two other ant habitats before trying this one out.

I anticipated that this would take some set up, as most things like this don't really arrive ready to go straight out of the box. That didn't bother me, since I wasn't looking for an ant habitat for my kids that was like everyone other one on the market. I loved that I got to team up with my kids and do each step together. We started by cooking our gel for the habitat. The gel seems way higher quality than other junk we've received with some other habitats. We then planted everything together. We waited until the planting was done to order our ants. Receiving ants in the mail is likely the highlight of my children's lives thus far. They thought it was HYSTERICAL that we were mailed the ants. Anyways, once we got the ants in their new habitat, they seemed to do great! It took them a few days to settle in, but now they are making tunnels left and right.

On a side note, this habitat does require batteries that don't come with it. It has a USB port in the side of it that you can use to plug it in to a computer instead, but doesn't come with the cable. The cable it uses is super standard (I swear we have 7 of those types of cords around our house, they are used for everything). It didn't bother me to plug it in - or even if I had to buy batteries, no problem. The habitat is SO nice that it is well worth a little extra effort.

The habitat takes like 3 weeks to get set up, which is ok if your kids are aware of this up front...its not an open the box and bam there you go situation. Then the next thing is you either have to use a mini usb cable (whick luckily we had) or you have to buy the $15 batteries for the thing. Then we ordered the ants that 2 weeks to get here which was fine because we thought the plants would grow in a week like it said and then you have to wait a week for you to add ants but it took 3 weeks for the plants to grow and then we had to wait a week so timing it worked out fine. The ants we got from them were the only plus...they had to be the biggest ants Ive ever seen...really cool to look at. But when we put them in the habitat all the did was huddle together and not do anything...its been almost 2 weeks and still nothing, no tunnels, no any thing...this was lame.

My eight-year-old daughter got this for Christmas. She was so excited. We made the gel and thought it was fun (like making Jello). No problem to put batteries in for the lights. And if you don't have the batteries, don't worry. It will take so long to get the habitat up and running you won't recall that it has lights (and the lights really aren't necessary). We live in an area where there aren't a lot of ants in the winter so we sent away for ants from the Kristal Education. It took a MONTH for them to arrive, even though the company said to expect them in a week. The vial the ants arrived in had them labeled as "harvester ants" and within the first few days of introducing them to the habitat, they had harvested most of the plants, chewing through the plant stems, leaving the plant waste to rot in the gel. Ultimately, the ants only ever made two small u-shaped tunnels, one on each end of the habitat. Completely underwhelming. Now that we've had the ants for about a month, the plant rot has become mold that has covered most of the surface of the gel. Most of the ants are dead. They never created any any meaningful tunnels. We carefully followed all the instructions and ended up with a failed experience and a sad little girl who just agreed that we can throw out the habitat since it is now so gross to look at. Don't waste your money on this.
