James M. Deem is the author of numerous books of nonfiction and fiction for children, including the 2009 Sibert Honor Book, BODIES FROM THE ICE: MELTING GLACIERS AND THE RECOVERY OF THE PAST. His latest book, FACES FROM THE PAST: FORGOTTEN PEOPLE OF NORTH AMERICA, took him on a 60,000-mile research journey to tell the stories of historic remains whose faces have been recreated by forensic artists.
Born in Wheeling, West Virginia, he has lived in Kansas, Michigan, New York, and Arizona. He earned a Bachelor's degree in language arts from the University of Kansas and a master's degree and doctorate in reading education at the University of Michigan. For twenty-seven years, he taught reading and study skills to underprepared college students. He and his wife live in Tucson, Arizona, where he writes fulltime.
It's very hard to explain Holocaust history to kids, but with politicians comparing each other to Hitler and "Holocaust" being used in so many different contexts, questions will come up. This is an excellent resource for information about how the war against Jews began. It is well-written, well-illustrated, and very thoughtfully presented. it covers far more than just the night of Kristallnacht, but uses that as a starting point to explain that tragic time in history,
