Five stars for recipes; 1 star for organization,

This review is from: Kristen Suzanne's EASY Raw Vegan Soups: Delicious & Easy Raw Food Recipes for Hearty, Satisfying, Flavorful Soups (Paperback)
The recipes in this book are really good, and if that were the only criterion, I'd give this book 5 stars. I have really liked everything I've made. I don't mind that there are no pictures, either.
However, there is more to putting out a good recipe book than tasty recipes. Organization is important in order to produce a book that is easy to use. There is NO list of recipes in the table of contents, and NO index of recipe titles or of ingredients. This means you have to page through the entire recipe section to find 'Guacamole soup' or 'Summertime Corn Bisque'. There is simply no way to find recipes other than flipping through the book--the recipes aren't even in alphabetical order by title within the recipe section, either. There appears to be no discernible organization of these recipes within the book. The lack of an ingredients index means that you can't look up an ingredient and find all the recipes that contain that ingredient. These are *major* organizational flaws in a recipe book. There also isn't clear delineation between recipes. That is, the recipes run together, rather than each recipe beginning at the top of a separate page. This bugs me, but not nearly as much as no index. I have two of Kristen's books, and each one has the same first chapter, which is redundant. The other book also lacks an index or list of recipes in the table of contents. If Kristen ever revises this book and the others in the series, I strongly advise the addition of an index, or at the very least a listing of the title of each recipe in the table of contents. The latter suggestion would not add to the cost of producing the books and would make them far easier to use than they are now.

KRISTEN SUZANNE'S EASY RAW VEGAN SOUPS,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Kristen Suzanne's EASY Raw Vegan Soups: Delicious & Easy Raw Food Recipes for Hearty, Satisfying, Flavorful Soups (Paperback)
THIS IS A GREAT BOOK FOR PEOPLE ON THE GO. SOME OF MY FAVORITE RAW SOUPS FROM KRISTEN SUZANNE ARE "GREEN MOXIE SOUP", "GARLIC LEMON LIME BISQUE" AND "ARRIBA TORTILLA SOUP". MY TEENAGERS LOVE THIS BOOK BECAUSE THEY CAN MAKE A MEAL FAST, POUR IT IN A MUG AND GO DO HOMEWORK. MY DAUGHTER MAKES A RECIPE THE NIGHT BEFORE AND POURS IT IN A THERMOS AND TAKES IT TO SCHOOL. THE COLORS OF THE SOUPS ARE BEAUTIFUL AND THE FLAVORS ARE AMAZING. IF I WANT A SNACK AT NIGHT I POUR A LITTLE SOUP IN A WINE GLASS. THESE SOUPS ARE REALLY GOOD AND EASY TO MAKE!!!!

As someone with food allergies, buying commercial soup or eating soup in a restaurant is just too much of a risk as I never "really know" what's in it. But with this book, not only do I know the vegetables are fresh, I know what all the other ingredients are too. Kristen's soups are absolutely delicious. I think out of all the things she makes-even the desserts which I LOVE- the soups are my favorite. I've tried making other soup recipes and come back to her's time and time again. The flavors are great and rival that of any soup I've had before. With these recipes, I can still enjoy soup and the "mystery ingredients" are gone. What's left are great nutrition and delicious flavor.

I'm a raw foodist and I love raw, blended soups. In fact, I have one for lunch almost every day. Unfortunately, all of my soup creations tasted the same...blend a few veggies, throw in some garlic and cayenne and eat.
That was then. Now, I've found the secret. This books is packed with delicious recipes for raw soups...and they DO NOT all taste the same. There are so many wonderful taste experiences included, it's hard to pick a favorite. And, as an added plus, they are all very easy to make.

This review is from: Kristen Suzanne's EASY Raw Vegan Soups: Delicious & Easy Raw Food Recipes for Hearty, Satisfying, Flavorful Soups (Paperback)
Kristen's raw soups have been a lifesaver in my transition to raw foods. I would find myself hungry between meals, so I started keeping raw soups in the fridge for a quick snack. I even make large portions and freeze some in mason jars for the next week. They're great for people on the go and go great with a salad for a satisfying, filling meal.
Her soups are very flavorful, delicious and great to share with family and friends. Among my favorites are the Bell Pepper Soup Diane, Sun-Drenched Sicilian, Famous Creamed Carrot and the Arriba Tortilla Soup. I can't wait to make her Citrus Dill Delight Soup. Thanks for another great book Kristen.

Soup's On!,

Raw Soups have not been my favorite raw dish, in the seven years I have been raw. I purchased Suzanne's book because she always inspires me with her creations. I have made a list of the soups I DO want to make in her book - she has great ideas! She also provides some "Basic Soup Making" information. I am looking forward to the weather cooling down a little bit and then start trying some of her soup recipes. I have 11 of Suzanne's books and I am so grateful to have this entire collection.
I love that Kristen has placed an abundance of food photos on her website - I can easily print one color page (screen shot) and have photos! I have folded the one page in half and keep it in my book. I know she is trying to keep the cost of the book down. She even mentions in the recipe book that the picture is available online. What a great idea. Be sure to check our her blog, I enjoy all the info and videos she provides. It's such a treat to visit her site!

I recieved the book and despite the luscious cover, the inside is pretty plain.I personally don't need 'food porn', but if you want pictures you'll have to look here or on her site. It would have been nice to have 1 or 2 color pics in there. I've tried a couple of recipes and found I had to spice them up to my taste, even add ingredients to really deal with one soup's lack of flavor when I went by the recipe. I do wish it was organized. I would like the fruit soups in one area, chowders in another etc. I do like having a small book of soups though. It's small for travel, which is cool since I would probably eating soups on the go.

This is another great book from Kristen Suzanne. Raw soups are so quick and easy to make and Kristen's recipes do not disappoint. Kristen always comes up with unusual and wonderful flavor combinations. I love the Yin-Yang Soup (it also works great as a salad dressing when thinned out a bit). Her Famous Creamed Carrot Soup is also amazing! There's so many yummy-sounding recipes in this book, I can't wait to try more! Next up will probably be the Spicy Thyme Bisque. Like her other books, this book includes the basics in the beginning - instructions on certain ingredients and food prep, which is very useful for those just starting out.

The pros: tasty recipes
Easy-to-follow directions. The cons : NO index, so specific recipes are difficult to find. The same first 10 pages or so are contained in each of her books, so you pay for that over and over again if you buy more than one. Not sure if the cost-vs-benefit ratio is good. IMO, ALL her books could have been condensed into one--WITH an index!--for half the price or less than all of her books purchased separately.

This book is helpful for anyone wanting to prepare raw dishes, easily and not sacrifice taste or presentation. Kristen "gets it" that it aids a dietary regimen if the food looks appealing, meal after meal. This book is brief, has some tasty recipes and some simple but very helpful hints. She suggests the kitchen equipment needed to create these dishes, tips on soaking and dehydrating nuts and seeds, compares sweeteners, clarifies basic measurement conversions, instructs the reader on making nut/seed milks, raw mustard and raw mayonnaise to name a few...I love her Pecan Bisque and her Thai soup...yuuuuummm. Treat yourself and try some of these nourishing and raw delights that makes "uncooking" manageable and fun! I think I counted 42 soup recipes...which should be plenty for anyone's palate... Just a great little book to keep. |
