Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Just as seashells house the sound and spirit of the sea, so too the forest houses the sound and spirit of the legendary fairies. A 1997 Parents' Choice Gold Award winner, Kristen's Fairy House takes its viewers on a quiet journey of many unexpected discoveries. Young Kristen ventures into the peaceful surroundings of an island off the coast of Maine with her talented Aunt Tracy, a storybook artist. Together they explore a wonderful woodsy land dedicated to the creation of fairy houses. As the week--and Kristen's own fairy house project--progresses, the two share simple moments of heartwarming pleasure: a cozy campfire, a breakfast of blueberry pancakes, a late-night waltz in their quaint cottage. The entire movie is shot as a documentary, narrated in retrospective prose by Kristen. Throughout the story, she learns the importance of viewing the world with an artist's eye, appreciating beauty in the smallest packages. Its simple style, harmonious score, and inviting scenery make this short feature tremendously enjoyable for youngsters old enough to ponder the reality of fairies and adults young enough to let them. The videotape package includes a handout, illustrated by Aunt Tracy, that describes tips for building a fairy house like Kristen's. Upon viewing, kids will probably want to dig right in and build their own. --Liane Thomas

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet and Pretty, August 21, 2000

I love this video! It's nice to find a children's movie that isn't filled with action and adventure. It is a good bedtime movie, because it is so quiet and gentle. My six-year-old sister loved it, and wished she was Kristen. Even though I am older than the targeted audience, I love it too! I like to watch it with my sisters before we go to bed. My favorite scene is the part where Kristen and Tracy dance to "The Nutcracker" music and twinkling Christmas lights. This is a very beautiful movie, and although it may not exactly be edge-of-your-seats entertainment, "Kristen's Fairy House" is well worth the money.

As long as you have the proper expectations, you'll love this video. No flashy special effects; just a gentle story about appreciating nature from an artistic point of view, with a nice music soundtrack. Nothing to scare the little ones, which doesn't mean your older kids won't like it. Both of my kids (8 year old daughter and 11 year old son) and I enjoyed it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun and refreshing, October 20, 2000
A Kid's Review
My daughters and I thoroughly enjoyed this refreshing video. In fact the children went outside and built 3 fairy houses. It took them about 3 hours. I inspected their work and delighted in their efforts.

The age question would not let me insert my correct age -- I am 50.
