We experienced a devastating house fire. Fire raged through one end of the house, heavy smoke and soot found its way in every nook and cranny. 1400 degree heat melted light fixtures, boiled food in the refrigerator. We had extensive pieces of china (Spode, Wedgewood, Herend), ceramics, glass, crystal (Waterford, Baccarat, Yeoward), kitchen ware - some exposed, some in cabinets. The insurance company sent a "service" out the day of the fire. They took 'samples' to see what could be salvaged. When they returned 5 days later, they were prepared to start packing and removing the remaining household items, declaring items were too labor intensive to save. Meanwhile, I went into high gear, filled a couple of plastic bins with similar items and started experimenting with several products at an off site garage sink. Krud Kutter was a name that came up on a fireman's wife's blog. I quickly discovered soot and smoke doesn't rinse off, nor does it wash off easily. I bought the Krud Cutter in the 32oz spray bottle. Using a degreaser dish washing liquid for the first clean and old terry washcloths (sponges and brushes weren't effective), I discovered that Krud Kutter cut through and literally melted off residue in cracks, crevices, corners, etc. I rinsed everything well and dried it, packing it in non print newspaper and plastic bins. I had Herend china with gold leaf on an open hutch totally covered with soot and smoke, even looking scorched. I cleaned 60 some pieces in 3 hours with Krud Kutter and it looked brand new. The 'service' said it took them 3 hours on a coffee pot and they managed to rub off and remove all the gold leaf. I then checked with my local fire department whether Krud Kutter would be safe in our septic system and got the go ahead.Read more ›

I bought this on the recommendation of Jan M. Dougherty's book, The Lost Art of House Cleaning. I'm glad I did, because it is everything she said it was. I tested it on the cruddy wall behind my friend's stove. This woman has lived in that apartment for 22 years, smoked in it, cooked on that stove - and never, ever cleaned the wall between the top of the stove and the cabinets above. I'll leave it to your imagination what that was like! But I had to cook there for a short while and had to clean it up. I used all-purpose spray cleaner. Nothing. That crud didn't budge. I used a green scrubbie and Comet. Some of it came up but those little dots of brown from grease and cigarette smoke that hardened on the spot wouldn't budge. So the next time I was there, I brought Krud Kutter, sprayed it on full-strength, waited about 40 seconds and rubbed with one of those green scrubbie cloths and guess what?! It all came clean. And I didn't really have to scrub.

So - floors. Spray with undiluted KK and use a Swiffer mop thing with a Swiffer pad or a Swiffer duster mop thing with a terry cleaning cloth instead of the dusting cloth and have at it. Finish with a spray of vinegar (straight or diluted 50/50) and a clean pad or cloth. Clean. Amazon sells spray bottles 3 to a package that has measurements for ounces and milliliters for easy dilutions. They have adjustable nozzles so you can spray widely or squirt a stream.

Use full strength for heavy cleaning of really dirty stuff. Follow with a spray of vinegar & a wipe - and be proud of the clean. Use 1 part KK to 5 parts water for general cleaning.

Use it in the kitchen and bathroom. You don't need any other cleaners except Soft Scrub or Bon Ami for sinks, tubs and toilets.

I bought this product on a lark a few years ago at a local hardware store. It worked so surprisingly well and is biodegradable that I stopped using my regular (somewhat toxic) kitchen cleaners. Removes caked on stove top messes easily, cuts grease effectively (let it soak a little for tougher jobs), but I mainly love that it takes off sticker goo and accidental dried paint splatter (how it seems to know the difference between the accidental paint and the base paint you don't want removed....I have no idea). This gallon size is a great deal. The amount of 4 spray bottles for the price of 2 at the store.

I didn't notice this was "non-toxic" when I ordered it. I was actually looking for industrial strength degreaser--the kind with a warning picture showing a human hand with flesh falling off. But since this arrived, and I didn't want to hassle with a return/replacement, I decided to use it. It works pretty well on most non-settled grease. But if the grease is old and "glue like", you are going to have to put a lot of scrubbing to get it off with this stuff.

The positive side is that this stuff has literally almost no smell. It's almost disturbingly odorless. And according to the label, it won't damage most materials. So if you spill some on the carpet or whatever, there should be no problem. It's great for standard kitchen cleaning.

I bought this product hoping that it would work to clean my white kitchen cupboards sufficiently so that I could sell my home without having to upgrade to replace the perfectly good WHITE kitchen cupboard. It did a great job. Looked great with the newly painted creamy yellow walls. I was basking in the glow of how well it turned out and taking a well earned nap, when I was awakened and told that my one year old (prematurely terrible two toddler) had found a black marker and used in on my white cupboards and appliances and floor. I freaked, determine that my grandson, Justin Credible, would not make it to two. We calmed and tried the Krud Kutter on the damage and it worked beautifully without damaging any of the finishing. I am very pleased and the kitchen looks great.
