Krull had great potential, but it lacked star power and was therefore cut down to the bare minimum production values.

This novelization tells it like it was supposed to be. Better than the movie.

This is one on Foster's best writings. It inthralled me and kept me going with an adventure that didn't slow down. There is also some moral themes. They are in the background and don't scream out at you, leaving you to fully enjoy the story. This book is well worth reading and better than the movie.

First off, I have to say that I am a big fan of the movie. I know a lot of people think it's cheesy or hokey, but I just love it. It has all the right elements-- an intriguing story, love, battles, great acting, awesome music, etc. Some of the effects aren't that great, but oh well. Are there a few plot-holes? Maybe--but I just let my imagination fill in the gaps. It's a two hour movie, but a LOT happens in those two hours. All the same, every time I was done watching the movie, I wanted MORE. I want to know history, and back-stories and thoughts that you just can't get in a movie.
This is where the book comes in. I was so glad when I found this book on-line, so I could maybe get some of what I was looking for. I had some trepidations, because what if the book was poorly written? What if it didn't jive the way I wanted it to? What if I was left as unsatisfied with the book as I was with the movie?
Is this book a paragon of writing? No. But I did get my explanations for some of the actions I was curious about.

I got:
-a history of Colwyn and Lyssa, and their reasoning (in detail) of why they decided to get married.
-the feelings of mis-giving Ynyr had about Colwyn's choice of army.
-more of the friendship that grew between Ergo, Rell and Titch.
-a sad look at the female changeling who could not make Colwyn betray Lyssa
-explanations for a multitude of little things that I didn't even know I had questions about until they were explained--then I thought, "Oh, that makes sense..."

There are some things I didn't get-- Ynyr always hinted at something, but never got around to telling Colwyn. So like Colwyn, I have to guess!

I enjoyed the read because I could picture all the actors from the movie doing everything, and I could hear James Horner's music setting the mood, and I got a fuller story the movie--and no movie ever can-- possibly give. I don't know that the book can stand alone without the movie--but it is a great supplement.

Both Krull the novel and the film had great potential to be excellent entertainment. However there was a lot left to be desired in both. The book was written after the movie and follows it without much deviation. The book does give it's reader better insight into the minds of the characters and situations, however it is still lacking in detail. I am left with questions that will go unanswered and I find that annoying. The writing is poor and at times it is so bad I find it hilarious. The author writes things such as "Booty belongs to masters, not servants..." (this is Ynyr's answer to Colwyn when he asks what the Slayers will do to Lyssa). Nevertheless if you enjoyed the movie but want more insight into the story I recommend reading the book.
