4.0 out of 5 stars The gold standard in our house --and some hints for using it
We had to go back to paper filters while our coffee pot and Krups gold filter were in storage during a move. So I had a chance to compare, again, the gold filter versus the paper cones. Here are my observations:

Product description doesn't tell you what size filter this is. It is a size 4. It did not fit our size 2 filter holder. Product returned.

We had to go back to paper filters while our coffee pot and Krups gold filter were in storage during a move. So I had a chance to compare, again, the gold filter versus the paper cones. Here are my observations:

1. It is a pain to remember to buy filters, and sometimes the grocery store is out of stock. I like the brown unbleached filters and those are not always available.

2. If you use this gold-coated filter, you should NOT grind your coffee too fine. (We grind our own in a small electric mill.) The filter allows somewhat more sediment through than the paper variety. I don't like finding even a small amount of sludge at the bottom of my mug. A careful grind does take care of this problem, however.

4. Despite the fact that gold is relatively inert and stainless, it doesn't hurt to rub down the filter and plastic with a paste of baking soda and water, once a week. This removes any bad-tasting residue that can accumulate.

All in all, when we unpacked our filter and started using it again, I was very happy. It saves paper, money and time. I recommend it if you have a cone-filter type coffee pot.

5.0 out of 5 stars worth the price, August 20, 2000

I use my Krups coffee maker and this gold tone filter every single day and this is a must have! It's very durable and easy to clean. I usually dump it in the dish washer. My filter has lasted over 2 years and it's developed a small tear at the bottom of the filter and I'm about to replace it. Nevertheless you will save over buying paper filters in the long run.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not good as gold, February 9, 2007

First let me say that I bought this re-usable filter based on user reviews and the idea that I could stop buying the paper filters. There are a few downsides to using this filter. When you have finished brewing the coffee there is a silt residue at the bottom of the pot. It is something akin to the stuff on the bottom of a tea pot. You will notice a strange metallic taste with this filter. You have to clean the filter after each use. Dumping the grounds in the trash can gets most of the grounds, but you have to rinse the filter to clean out the remainder. I've had this filter nearly two months and I may go back to paper filters just to make sure the things I've noted here are directly related to the Gold Tone Filter.

5.0 out of 5 stars No Problems, November 30, 2005

I've been using the gold tone filter since day one and I haven't had any problems. I use both pre-ground and home-ground coffee. When I grind coffee for my Krups coffee maker myself, I try to match the grind of the pre-ground coffee. I use a larger grind for my French press and it still has more sediment than coffee made with the gold tone filter. Perhaps I am not a coffee connoisseur because I haven't noticed any metallic taste. I also love to put my filter in the dishwasher.

While I save the expense of filters, it just doesn't give me that clean taste of coffee that another more metallic brand of permanent filter gives me. In fact it has the look of gold colored nylon versus the more "solid" golden filters of other brands.

Cleaning it is a bear, not so much getting the stains out, that works well enough, but it takes a lot of water to finally purge the filter of grounds that accumulate in various nooks and crannies.

But it's still probably in improvement over the paper filters.

this filter is a great one to use in a Gevalia Coffee Maker because it has 2 flat sides which means it clears the the main drip container handle anchors so it removes easily

Try a taste test sometime. Make 2 cups of coffee. One with a paper filter and one with this kind of reusable filter. Tell me that you can't pick out the one made with a paper filter!

Yes...you can taste the paper!

I was so tired of buying paper filters. The waste and expense was really starting to bother me. This thing works great, fits my machine and is easy to clean.

This was almost exactly what I was looking for. I say almost, because it is not truly gold-plated (not nearly as expensive as you'd think.) Real gold is much easier to clean, and to keep clean; and it is chemically inert, so it can't react with other substances.
Otherwise, the Krups basket works very well. Remember that the key reason for using one of these is to not have to use paper filters. That makes this a very "green" item. I recommend it.
