5.0 out of 5 stars An ecological solution to coffee filters--and a warning
This is an economical solution to using paper filters for coffee--even the unbleached ones that stress the environment less than bleached paper does. The gold coating on the plastic makes for a neutral flavored filtration. You will get a few more fines than with a paper filter.

I have been using gold coffee filters for years for all my coffeemakers, however I was very disappointed with this one by Krups. I love my Krups Aroma Control with stainless steel carafe, but the Swiss Gold filter is far superior to the Krups 049. You can find the Swiss Gold brand all over the web -- the #4 is the same size as the Krups 049.

A good gold...

However, when cleaning the filter, do not be tempted to put it in the dishwasher. The action of the metal cleaners in the detergent and an electroplating effect caused by other metals in the dishwasher (like your silverware) will remove the gold from the filter. Just wash it by hand with a few drops of dish detergent to remove coffee oils. This should last for years.

A good gold filter will give you the best coffee because it allows the coffee's oils to brew into the pot.

4.0 out of 5 stars Get the right filter!, May 19, 2006

This is the filter that fits the Krups FME2-14 12 cup coffee maker. It does not say this and the other filter description states that it fits all Krups makers. This is false information.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great filter...long-lasting, December 2, 2003

My husband and I bought this filter when we first got married. That was EIGHT YEARS ago and it's still going strong. We've gone through 3 coffee pots and have the same filter. I never have noticed flavor distortions like another reviewer mentioned. The coffee tastes great with no ground leakage. It's wonderful not having to buy filters. I would definitely recommend this product.

I liked the idea of the gold filter. No waste of paper(is it reusable)and has a handy handle to remove unit even while hot, but what I have found from using it, and it seems to only be with freshly ground coffee (using a krups grinder), you get a VERY bitter taste with it. I cleaned/soaked the gold filter and it did not change. Even when I changed coffees and the way it was ground, it was still there. I would suggest anyone who uses standard outta the bag ground coffee to use it, but be warned if you grind your own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Krups gold tone coffee filter 049, August 3, 2009
It is a permanent filter you use instead of paper ones. It is therefore an environmentally friendly product. It will last a long time and will cut down on needlessly using paper products. It works well.

I've been a loyal Krups customer for the last seven years. I finally purchased the gold tone filter for my newest coffee maker. This filter keeps most of the grounds in while brewing, but unfortunately not all. This leads to a slight sludgy residue at the bottom of the carafe, which isn't much of a problem until you get to the last couple of cups. The filter is a good purchase in that it eliminates paper filter waste and does not contribute any sort of metallic taste to the coffee.

This filter was purchased to use with our news Krups coffeemaker. I was skeptical from the beginning, as the basket was flimsy compared to our older Krups filter. The filter cracked after two weeks. I would not recommend.
