Yes, the large size and programmable timer are convenient. No, the carafe doesn't keep the coffee hotter than cheaper models. Plus, it lacks a spout, which makes for messy pouring. Save your money. In this case, the name does NOT live up to the hype.

I just got mine in the mail the other day. A little research and word-of-mouth told me it made great coffee, and guess what? It does! The first pot we brewed (after running some plain water through it once) was the best pot of drip coffee I've ever made at home. We took the pot out as soon as it stopped brewing as suggested by the other reviwes. The coffee was just a little too hot to drink black immediately and stayed warm and fresh for 3 or 4 hours. We were also able to pour from a full caraf without spilling anything. We tried the automatic timer, and it worked flawlessly. The smell of coffee woke me up before the alarm.

One important note: if you are concerned about some of the reviews where people said the caraf broke, don't worry. If you get the "Stainless" version (select "Stainless" as the color) it comes with an all-stainless-unbreakable caraf that has no glass liner. It's a few dollars more, but it's a very nice unit. We ordered it from Amazon thru "finejewelry_4u" and they included a free gold filter that helped offset the extra cost.

A couple of minor notes: The threaded cap to the caraf takes a bit of getting used to if you have unsteady hands. The unit is also taller than your average coffee pot (or at least our previous pot), so we have to pull it out from under our cabinet to pour the water in. Otherwise, no complaints here, thus far.

We've been using this coffee maker a little over a week now and are pretty much satisfied with it. On the 3rd day a small peice of plastic chipped off of the part that stops the flow of coffee so that you can pour yourself a cup while it's still brewing. Though disappointed that it was this "fragile", this has not affected the performance of the unit. I tested the temperature of the freshly brewed coffee and found it to be HOT - 170 degrees! The carafe does a great job of keeping the coffee hot for at least 4 hours (the longest it's gone before being consumed)Preheating the carafe with hot tap water helps keep it hot for the greatest length of time.
I love the portability of the carafe while still keeping my coffee hot - no more being tied to the hot plate- and no more breaking the flimsy glass carafes!
The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because the plastic chipped so quickly and because it doesn't have any type of spout to make it easier for pouring. Overall, I am very satisfied. I hope it lasts longer than my last 2 coffee pots (a 4 month oldDeLonghi and it's warrantied replacement that died 15 months later). My first Krups lasted 5 yrs - hope this one will too.

Krup Aroma Control is the best coffee maker I have bought since I started drinking coffee about 25 years ago (mine is black with brushed stainless steel). It makes really good coffee if you are using it correctly. Make sure you buy only quality coffee (starbucks or better). Set the grinder for cone shape filter or "fine". Using a disposable paper filter instead of the supplied metal filter will make better coffee because the metal filter is not fine enough. After the machine stops brewing, remove the thermal carafe immediately. When it is in the machine, the lid is depressed and the heat will escape. When washing the carafe, make sure you rinse the lid by pressing down on it and let water run through because old coffee is trapped inside.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not Happy, September 6, 2004
This review is from: Krups 229-4G Aroma Control 10-Cup Coffeemaker with Thermal Carafe, Black and Brushed Stainless Steel (Kitchen)
I was giving up my Cuisinart Grind and Brew because it was a good machine, BUT very hard to clean and all....so I wanted another really good coffee maker...so I went with this KRUPS.

The ONLY good thing I found with this coffee maker is that it does keep the coffee very, very hot. However, it is made with really cheap plastic; the lid to the pot screws on so you must take it off to fill it with water; when I poured it, it drips all over. You also are supposed to take the pot off the base of the coffee maker as soon as it's done brewing-this is just odd to me because I'm used to keeping it on the maker itself. I understand why they say to do it, so the lid shuts totally and the coffee stays hotter, but I didnt care for it.

I'm returning this tomorrow.

I have already ordered the new Melitta Grind and Brew off Amazon-hopfully it'll be much better!

2.0 out of 5 stars Terrible design!, January 22, 2003

This review is from: Krups 229-4G Aroma Control 10-Cup Coffeemaker with Thermal Carafe, Black and Brushed Stainless Steel (Kitchen)
I bought this coffee maker because I had owned a Krups with timer for 8 years with no problems until the digital clock went funny. The strange set-up of the timer and switches didn't bother me because they were similar to my old one. My main beef with this pot is that it is nearly impossible to pour out of the carafe without dribbling all over! It has no lip. It's just a big jug with a round opening. The instructions tell you to turn the plastic top on it, but this doesn't seem to help any. I would not recommend this model given how "much it costs"!

4.0 out of 5 stars Makes good, hot coffee--just don't leave the pot sitting in the coffee maker., February 10, 2006
This review is from: Krups 229-4G Aroma Control 10-Cup Coffeemaker with Thermal Carafe, Black and Brushed Stainless Steel (Kitchen)
I bought this recently and was at first one of the people complaining that my coffee wasn't hot enough but then I fig. out why. It tells you in the manual to remove the stainless steel carafe from it's perch when the coffee is done brewing--doesn't say why. The why is that while the carafe is sitting on the stand (which isn't heated) the top is being kept open (you know, that's how the water trickles down into the pot) thus letting the coffee cool off. If you set it on your counter w/the lid tightly sealed, the coffee will stay hotter longer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mid-level Coffee Snobs, sign here, April 22, 2005

If there's something to observe from reviews of coffee-related appliances, it's that people are fussy and intolerant! I've owned this product for a year now, and had no problems. The carafe is nice. Realistically, it keeps the coffee hot for an hour or two, and then merely warm for hours after that.

My only minor nitpick is the lid for the carafe can be tricky at times, but not an issue which weighs upon the purchase--I would buy this one again!

I have owned this product for 8 months. What a disappointment. The coffee is hot sometimes, but lukewarm most of the time right after brewing. What you're really paying for is the Thermos carafe. Seriously, don't be misled by the description of the Krups, it really is a poor product. Buy yourself a decent coffee maker like the Cuisinart for about the same $$ and get a superior coffee maker (I bought Cuisinart Coffee Maker to replace the Krups. It has alot more features and makes a great pot of coffee, hot too!).

2.0 out of 5 stars Broken Handle!, June 17, 2004

This review is from: Krups 229-4G Aroma Control 10-Cup Coffeemaker with Thermal Carafe, Black and Brushed Stainless Steel (Kitchen)
I purchased this machine from Amazon a little over a year ago. It took some getting used to but then we were happy with it. The coffee is good and comes out hot although does not stay hot for too long. Yesterday, I went to pour my coffee and the handle snapped off the thermal carafe!!! Coffee spilled everywhere and thank goodness my 2 children were not in the kitchen! I called Krups about what I thought MUST be a defect and after reading the numbers on the bottom of the machine they said I was past the one year warrantee and would have to BUY another carafe for $65.00! Poor customer service. They just lost a customer.
