5.0 out of 5 stars Best one for the money!
I have had some other brands of makers in the last 8 years and went back to Krups after having a bad experince with a Cuisinart (very nice looking, but terrible coffee). The settings on this are great, you can set the hold Temp., the time off and even pre-warm the glass carafe. It is truly amazing! 3.0 out of 5 stars Gold Tone Filter less than satisfactory.....
I bought this coffee machine to try out the Gold filter instead of having to deal with disposable coffee filters. I knew that in Krups I was going to get a decent product. However, the gold filter doesn't filter appropriately. It passes too much of the coffee down to the dish leaving a gooey residue at the bottom of your cup. The recommendation (from Krups) of grinding...

This review is from: Krups 453-4C 12-Cup Coffeemaker with Gold Tone Filter, Black (Kitchen)
I have had some other brands of makers in the last 8 years and went back to Krups after having a bad experince with a Cuisinart (very nice looking, but terrible coffee). The settings on this are great, you can set the hold Temp., the time off and even pre-warm the glass carafe. It is truly amazing! The last Krups I had didn't have the timer or other extra settings and lasted me 5 years (used it 6-7 days a week!). I have gotten over a year from this one and it is showing no signs of wear or failure (again, I use it at least 6 days a week). I do recommend the black color over the white as all coffee machines in white eventually stain or turn brown in varied areas. Can't go wrong with this Krups.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth Twice the Price, February 15, 2004
By A Customer
After running through six other leaking, hissing, worthless coffee makers (one of which was a Braun) I spent an hour reading the Amazon reviews, then went out and bought this Krups model. My husband thought it was an extravagance until he brewed the first cup. It was absolutely the best coffee we've ever made. It works flawlessly out of the box, and actually uses LESS coffee due, I suppose, to its efficiency. I love being able to adjust the warming temperature and set the auto shutoff. Quiet, elegant, and with a small counter footprint, this Krups is perfect. So perfect I'm having to get out of bed early, or my husband drinks all the coffee. Yesterday, he sent me back to buy another for our weekend house.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to use and reliable, November 24, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Krups 453-4C 12-Cup Coffeemaker with Gold Tone Filter, Black (Kitchen)
We got this machine for a wedding gift two years ago and it is still going strong. It is very intuitive and easy to use (I have never had to read the manual) and it makes a great cup of coffee (I use filtered water and do not use the carbon filter). I especially like the option of setting it 1-4 cups for when you make a smaller pot of coffee. I have not had a problem with the carafe dribbling although I pour agressively. It is a workhorse and I highly recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Dribble Carafe, July 29, 2002
By
Mighty_Cranium "mighty_cranium" (Cottage Grove, MN United States) - See all my reviews
The electronic controls on this guy are not the easiest ones
to use. They aren't nearly as intuitive as they should be.
"Aroma" and "Temp" are good examples of settings that should be
more easily described. "Strength"? "Hotplate"?

In any case, this is a superb machine with one major flaw.
The carafe is a dribble cup. You try to pour the water into the
container and inevitably, you have a mess to wipe up. Bought a new carafe figuring we may have just had a bad one. Nope. Now we have TWO dribble carafes. It's a design issue.

Bottom line, if you can put up with that, this coffee maker with it's gold mesh filter is the best unit I have ever had. The best coffee, the least 'consumables', and if you are concerned about the bleached white filters and their health and/or environmental effects, this is the one for you, since you simply do not use them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Krups 453-71 12-Cup Coffee Maker, January 29, 2004
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
After looking at a number of coffee makers, we chose the Krups 453-71 12 cup because of its many features. It promised to brew a hot cup of great coffee and it does. It has a large 12 cup carafe that is great when entertaining and there's not much that you can't program it to do. It even allows you to control the temperature of the coffee as it sits on the warmer. It is a great coffee maker for well under $100 (Amazon w/ free shipping). Contrarty to some of the reviews, it is extremely easy to program and you're brewing coffee within minutes of opening the box. Oh, and did I mention that you can even set it to warm up the carafe before it starts brewing so your hot coffee isn't pouring into a cold carafe on those cold mornings!
I highly recommend the Krups 453-71.

5.0 out of 5 stars LOVE IT!!, March 28, 2004
By A Customer
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Krups 453-4C 12-Cup Coffeemaker with Gold Tone Filter, Black (Kitchen)
I LOVE a good HOT cup of coffee! I received this unit last week and boy does it deliver! I searched local stores and could not find a good unit. I purchased a MR. Coffee which I will be taking back. It just didn't brew hot enough, and the machine, even though it was only $10 less than my new Krups, did not operate well at all. The pause feature worked only part of the time, (resulting in coffee spilling all over the hot place...Augh!)and one of the push buttons didn't work right. When I saw this Krups unit in Amazon, it seemed to be just what I wanted. This Krups IS all that I wanted and more. Love the hot plate temperature choices; it is easy to program, and the brew temperature is nice and hot! No more needing to nuke my cup o' joe 5 minutes after pouring. The carafe does not dribble when I pour. I don't normally use the gold filters because of the sediment but it's nice to have if I'm out of paper filters.

I don't believe anyone will be disappointed buying this unit. My old Bosch was just worn out and I am so excited to find a new coffeemaker that I enjoy just as much as the Bosch, even more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well-designed coffee maker, January 18, 2004
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
My wife and I are very pleased with this coffee maker (Krups 453-71). It makes MUCH better coffee than our old Mr. Coffee.
It has a gold filter, auto-off (1-5 hours), 3 brew-strength settings (1-3 cups, 4-12 "medium", 4-12 "strong"), 6 carafe plate heat levels, an optional carafe pre-warm function (warms the carafe for 5 minutes before brewing), and can use a charcoal water filter (one is supplied). It is also programmable to start brewing at a specified time.
We've only used the 4-12 "strong" setting, but it makes DELICIOUS coffee. It pulses the water released into the grinds (I'd say it's about a 15-second cycle) so that each bit of water has time to brew before draining into the carafe. We only get a small amount of fine grounds slipping through the filter (I grind for about 8 seconds).
The overall design of the unit is great -- no gotchas. Water pours in easily, carafe doesn't dribble. We don't use the supplied charcoal filter because we're already using filtered water. The carafe lid is has this grid over the pouring spout that is supposed to retain droplets of coffee to sort of seal the lid and prevent evaporation. It doesn't really work, but who cares. It was a clever idea that was worth a shot.
Overall we love this unit and have no complaints!

3.0 out of 5 stars Gold Tone Filter less than satisfactory....., October 18, 2003
By
Dilip S. Kumar (Seattle, WA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Krups 453-4C 12-Cup Coffeemaker with Gold Tone Filter, Black (Kitchen)
The recommendation (from Krups) of grinding the beans coarser and hence preventing it from seeping through the filter is an inadequate solution to the problem. After all, why bother drinking coffee if it isn't strong enough (finer beans, stronger coffee).

All in all, if that doesn't bother you, this is a good coffee machine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Makes great, hot coffee!, February 2, 2003
This review is from: Krups 453-4C 12-Cup Coffeemaker with Gold Tone Filter, Black (Kitchen)
What made me finally choose this coffee machine over another brand that I was considering was the feature that allows you set how warm, or hot, you want to keep your coffee. I like my coffee hot! (1=warm, 2, 3, 4=brew temp, 5, or, 6=hot.) It also has a feature to pre-warm the carafe. The program feature is very easy to use and it makes great deep brewed coffee.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE BEST MACHINE I HAVE EVER OWNED !!, November 4, 2003
By A Customer
I love my coffee. I had purchased a Kitchenaid coffee maker a few years ago and luckily it recently died... I did some research and went out and bought this Krups model at Kitchen Etc. I wasn't sure how the coffee would come at at first because it took lots of trial and errors with the Kitchenaid to get it to where I could drink it. Let me tell you that my first cup with the KRUPS was absolutely exceptional !!!.... I LOVE THIS MACHINE !! I cannot rave about it enough. I am very satisfied and if you love coffee as much as me, you will not be disappointed. I have never used the gold tone filter that comes with it so I cannot comment on how it works..... BUT the disposable ones are just so easy and I never ever have grinds at the bottom of my pot. Aside from brewing a great cup of coffee, it looks nice and and is extremely easy to use. This is worth every penny ... don't hesitate !
