5.0 out of 5 stars Great for grains
We went on the new Weight Watcher Core Food plan which encourages you to eat whole grains. Sounds great but how do you cook those tough shelled, long cooking, starchy, sticking, burning foods.

THIS RICE COOKER IS IT!! We have thrown every type of oats, grits, brown rice, brown rice/lentil medley, non-gluten cereal, Wheatena in this pot with the right amount...

2.0 out of 5 stars Mediocre for a Krups appliance
It looks like a Krups -- what with the stainless steel look and the fancy electronics, but, as a rice cooker, it does not perform as expected. The rice is passable but certainly not the best we've had - our very old National rice cooker produced better rice. Also disappointing is the lack of a retractable electrical cord - winding the electrical cord around a chintzy...

THIS RICE COOKER IS IT!! We have thrown every type of oats, grits, brown rice, brown rice/lentil medley, non-gluten cereal, Wheatena in this pot with the right amount of water from the package directions on the rice setting. It makes a perfect porridge every time without burning. You can even set it to have it ready for breakfast when you wake up in the morning.

It puts the warmth in our tummies.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dandy little appliance!, April 29, 2004
This review is from: Krups FDH212 10-Cup Automatic Rice Cooker with Slow Cooker and Steamer (Kitchen)
I like multi function appliances but sometimes it's case of a jack of all trades master of none. But this machine is nifty - does the basic rice cooking, steams and is also a slow cooker. Very useful for the price (you can get it cheaper at Kitchen Universe by the way I wonder if they will print this now that I've written it)
The steamer basket is too shallow so you have to keep the things you are steaming to a minimum height otherwise it sticks to the lid. That's my only complaint so far

Buttons can feel a little cheap but they work great

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice addition to my kitchen, September 16, 2004

This review is from: Krups FDH212 10-Cup Automatic Rice Cooker with Slow Cooker and Steamer (Kitchen)
I have had the cooker for a little while now and love it. It works as a slow cooker as well as rice cooker. When using as a rice cooker, you can set a timer to delay the start time for cooking, this is not an option for slow cooking or steaming. As mentioned by a previous reviewer, the steamer insert is only about 1 1/2 in deep. It is probably meant more for steaming while cooking rice or slow cooking at the same time. If you are looking for a steamer, this is not for you. As this is not a handicap for me, it is a perfect appliance. I love the keep-warm mode that it automatically goes into after finishing the cooking.
It took me a few tries to figure out when the cooker is actually cooking. The light that displays the mode goes from flashing to a steady light. Easy to miss.
Overall, a nice addition to my kitchen

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a good product for the price, September 29, 2004

I have to admit if you are looking at this in terms of a price comparison for any of the above features, rice cooker, slow cooker or steamer. then really forget about buy that one product. But if you want a product that does all three things great then this is the product for you. I have used it now 4 times since I bought actually slow cooking frozen chicken and vegetables and then steaming rice in it immediately following it and it worked great, didnt skip a beat from changing modes. I love the look of it and the fact that it is easy to clean. If you want to save space and dont have a large family then this is for you

It looks like a Krups -- what with the stainless steel look and the fancy electronics, but, as a rice cooker, it does not perform as expected. The rice is passable but certainly not the best we've had - our very old National rice cooker produced better rice. Also disappointing is the lack of a retractable electrical cord - winding the electrical cord around a chintzy metal cord holder (unstrategically located at the bottom of the cooker) gets old very quickly. Lastly, the fancy electronic display is not very informative when cooking rice. (It may be more helpful when using the appliance as a slow cooker - but we thought we were buying a rice cooker.)

Bottom line: it looks like a Krups, does not perform like one, and, with all its good looks, is decidedly un-ergonomic in its design. A disappointment. If we could, we'd return it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Lovely while it worked, December 13, 2005
This review is from: Krups FDH212 10-Cup Automatic Rice Cooker with Slow Cooker and Steamer (Kitchen)
This was a nice rice cooker when it worked, but it broke within just a few months. Faulty design that caused a wire in the lid to be broken by repeated opening and closing of the lid. I've repaired it twice now, but you would expect more from an $80 - $100 rice cooker.

Other than this small detail, I recommend it highly. (I especially recommend it for people who have copious free time for repairing their expensive appliances.)

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Choice, November 6, 2006
This review is from: Krups FDH212 10-Cup Automatic Rice Cooker with Slow Cooker and Steamer (Kitchen)
We eat a lot of rice, which comes out perfectly every time in this machine. I have never had it stick and have made rice at least 50 times since we got it. I have not used the slow cooker function, but the steamer is awesome! Make sure you use the right amount of water and depending on how crisp you like your veggies, you can adjust accordingly. Sometimes it helps to know the specifics/basics about an appliance you have never used before, so here goes. Basically you will pour in 1 cup of rice and 2 cups of water, push the button and approximately 20 minutes later you will have cooked rice. Now of course the amount varies depending on your family size, but 1 cup is perfect for 2 people. As for the steamer, I put some fresh green beans in the other night, pushed the steamer button and programmed it for 18 minutes. They were the best we have had in a long time. I recommend trying this appliance if you are looking for an easier way to get the job done in the kitchen. This is a great machine to play around with and the price is great for what you get. Happy cooking!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best addition to my kitchen! REVIEW UPDATE 02/2011, December 4, 2008
This review is from: Krups FDH212 10-Cup Automatic Rice Cooker with Slow Cooker and Steamer (Kitchen)
I cook a lot. I have done so for many years and have collected a small array of essentials for making cooking a pleasure instead of a chore. If something doesn't pull its weight in the kitchen, I donate it or toss it out. This machine has been on my counter for 2 years and gets used 3-6 times a week.

We got this machine for a wedding present and didn't think much of it, we put it on the list because it looked interesting.

I opened the box, washed the parts, plugged it in and have used it several times a week since July 2008. This automatic multi-cooker by Krups is FANTASIC!!!

It makes perfect rice, regardless of what type you put in. It steams fish and veggies to perfection. It is the best slow cooker I have ever used. It is near sentient in its ability to cook perfectly no matter what you put in it. Seriously.

What I have cooked in it...
RICES:
Brown Californian rice, Brown Basmani rice, White italian rice, White sushi rice, White Jasmine rice, Mixed wild rice pilaf, quinoa.

SLOW COOKER:
Curry chicken, chicken soup, the best roast I have ever had(you can CUT it, it doesn't shred!), beef stroganoff, tortilla soup, coco vin, stews, dulce de leche, baked potatoes, beef bourguignon, custards, pork loin with apricots, marinara sauce, beef bolognese, lasagne, spanish casserole, breakfast casserole, chilis, more.

STEAM:
A wide variety of veggies and several types of fish, all wonderful.

You can also cook pasta in it if your burners on the stove are occupied! There are instructions to tell you how. It comes with a small booklet of recipes to get you going or at least give you ideas. The "keep warm" function keeps foods piping hot for serving without over cooking them. The rice paddle is a nice accesory to have in the handy little holder on the side, it is easily removed as well. I have even clamped it shut and carried it by the handle to a friend's house to bring chili to a party!

I also appreciate that it is an airtight seal, the lid clamps into place and releases no steam for slow cooking and self regulates rice cooking with a steam vent. It has even has a condensation collector so it doesn't drip everywhere when you open the lid. Since you lose no moisture when slow cooking, you really get great flavour and texture from meat that I had never been able to get in the Rival crockpot. Seeing as how both my husband and I work full time, this has been a wonderful help during the week to get a complete dinner on the table in minutes. On weekends, I use it to make chicken or beef stock, or to cook up a batch of rice for the week.

I am allergic to wheat, so it is great to have a quick and delicious source of perfect rice and grains.

I would say this is the perfect wedding present -- if the couple does cook it is a great help, if the couple doesn't cook, then this will be a great way to make it easy on them to get started :)

The Krups website has replacement parts available, I plan on buying an extra interior bowl so I can pull out the entree and drop in the rice to cook -- even easier. Also, the bowl is metal so you can drop in frozen items without worry of cracking the crock.

This has my highest recommendation, it is like having a sous-chef in your kitchen!

UPDATE FEB 2011:
This appliance is still going strong as ever without any problems, I use it 3-6 times a week. I bought an additional 2 utility bowls and it is wonderful to be able to pull the bowl out containing the cooked roast, cover it with foil and allow it to rest on the side while I drop in a clean bowl and make a batch of rice to go with our dinner, SO EASY! We have a baby now, so this multi-cooker gets used A LOT and has never let me down :)

Worked adequately while it functioned, and the design is nice, but it stopped working after 18 months of limited use (once per week). I expected more from a Krups product, especially given the price.

3.0 out of 5 stars Convenient, but expected more for the price, June 24, 2005

I really wanted automatic thing like this for rice and other grains. Well, let me first say that it cooks 2 cups of rice for about 20 minutes, then sometimes it does make the rice brown at the bottom and I started just checking rice in 20 min. That's why I don't use the presetting time feature. Other than that, it cleans good and doesn't leave mess anywhere. You just close it tight and turn it off after rice is done.
I haven't used the slow cooking feature or steamer either, b/c the purpose of purchase was only to wake up and have the rice ready.
So the bottom line is that it's convenient and cooks pretty good rice if you watch it. But for this price it's probably not enough.
Also, it's a lot bigger than you can imagine looking at the picture.
