4.0 out of 5 stars Krups GX4100 - Good for the Money
The Krups Coffee/Spice Mill is a good value for the money. I use it primarily for grinding toasted seeds for Indian dishes (cardomman pods, cloves, cumin seed, peppercorns, coriander seed, mustard seed, chiles etc.). I read the reviews on how the plastic lid will 'cloud' from certain spices (e.g., cloves) and that doesn't matter to me. This grinder isn't a piece of...

3.0 out of 5 stars twice-a-day grind
I purchased this grinder 2 months ago to replace my second burned-out Kitchen Aid coffee mill/grinder. I bought this Krups because of its name, as well as its cool look. Unfortunately, I don't like the way it functions. The top is very difficult to twist into place-- an action that must happen before the unit will grind. Furthermore, there is so much static electricity in...

This grinder isn't a piece of artwork - it's a cooking tool. Where I used to spend 20 minutes with a hand-operated mill, the Krups does the same thing in about 5 seconds. It cleans up easily - it's all self-contained and there aren't any burrs to clean out - it's totally blade-operated. In a perfect world, it would grind more precisely (fine to coarse) - but that would require burrs and the cleaning associated with them. So for me and my needs, it's a good value for the money. The time I saved with the first usage more than pays for the machine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quick, versatile, handsome, quiet, durable and easy to clean., September 13, 2005
This review is from: Krups GX4100 Electric Coffee and Spice Grinder (Kitchen)
I have had mine since 1997 (or maybe 1996?), when it cost a hefty $50 or so. I used it almost every day for a long time, for coffee. I got lazy a couple years ago & started using already ground coffee, so it was relegated to a high cupboard.
It has resumed a prominent place in my kitchen, as I have discovered the joy of cooking fresh, organic food for my growing family. I now use it for nuts, seeds and grains! I was using other grinders, then got a clue, pulled this out and VOILA! I am SOO impressed with it's simple design, speed, durability, versatility AND it's not as noisy as other grinders/blenders (I do my best work late at night, after the bumpkin is asleep).
In my very practical, no-frills little kitchen, this is a handsome, functional product that I have enjoyed for many years, and it has proved itself to be a great purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars SPICE GRINDING, September 5, 2005

I purchased this grinder specifically for pepper grinding which requires fairly fine powder. This grinder works great for this and was exactly what I had wanted. I am sure coffee is good as well, but if looking for an electric spice grinder, this one is one of the best expecially for the money.

This product has done everything it claimed to do in excellent fashion. I have used it primarily to grind spices and it has performed above my expectations. It would be a good buy at twice the price

Ordered this a month ago from Amazon and have been very pleased with it! I use it to grind flax seeds. It is so easy to use! Just push the button and within seconds every one of these small fine seeds are done. It is so easy to clean also--just wipe the cutting arms and bowl with a damp paper towel and rinse the clear lid. I also like the way the cord wraps completely around the bottom so this looks nice on my countertop. Very well designed and easy tho use. Highest recommendation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Coffee Grinder I've Owned, January 7, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Krups GX4100 Electric Coffee and Spice Grinder (Kitchen)
I've been grinding my own coffee beans since the early eighties and since then I've owned a few different grinders, including the Krups Fast Touch and a similarly priced model made by Braun. I also own a burr grinder, which is good when I want to grind enough beans to last a few days or a week. The Krups GX4100 is by far my favorite. It's quiet, the lid locks on during grinding, it grinds fast, it feels powerful, I like the high tech look, and ground coffee seems to stick to the inside of the lid and the grinder far less than with cheaper grinders. It is necessary for me to carefully brush the ground coffee from the lid and grinder into a coffee filter, but for me this is part of the ritual of preparing a nice cup of coffee from freshly ground beans. I'm glad I purchased this grinder.

Update 2/20/10: I've used this grinder daily (except when traveling) since getting it a little over 2 years ago, and it continues to run perfectly. I typically use it twice a day. By now I know exactly how many seconds to grind beans for drip, espresso, and French press coffee, and the results are perfect every time. So glad I have this powerful, "industrial strength" grinder.

I have purchased a total of 6 of these. I've kept 2, one is at the summer cottage and one is for home. I gave the others as gifts and have always received gracious thank you's. Everyone, with out exception, loves the efficient way it works and most of all how QUIET it is. AND IT IS. This model is top drawer when it comes to grinding without waking everyone while making early morning coffee. If you are looking for a grinder that Works and does so Quietly.......get this, get this, get this!!

Furthermore, there is so much static electricity in the lid, that I always have residual coffee grinds dropping onto the counter as I remove it. There's also a sizable amount left in the chamber after I dump the grinds into the filter. Even though it was only a fraction of the fancy Kitchen Aid grinder's cost, I'm unhappy with its performance. I've already started looking for another stainless or brushed nickel grinder that I can leave on my kitchen counter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great to Speed up Processing, November 2, 2007

My family has nagged me for years to get a spice grinder for holiday gift making instead of doing it all by hand. Much to my pleasure, this grinder chops spices to just the right fineness for the products I make (ranging from gourmet mustards to barbecue rub). It's the perfect size for space limited counters, very quiet, and easy to clean up. The top is a firm fit, but you want that with loose spices. The only time it won't go into place is if there's remnant herb blocking it (again, something you want to KNOW about in cooking). It's also strong. Other grinders I've hand don't handle dried whole ginger root well at all, for example. This one barely notices! I am very happy with this.

I am using this mill for spice grinding. As I utilize hot pepper spices you need to be cautious when opening the machine post grinding as there is a puff of spice laden air exhausted which can be quite toxic. Therefore go outside and open it up (make sure to take note of the wind direction) or open up the grinder under an exhaust fan.

Interms of coffee grinding a technique I have learned on other machines is when the quality of the sound of the grinding changes to a higher pitch the grind is complete.
