2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, April 10, 2003
By A Customer
Filter holder was broken when I received. Was instructed to take it to repair shop. They had to order part, took about 8 weeks to repair. It still does not work properly. Filter holders do not close properly. It makes a terrible noise and often the water does not all run through the filter. Now am told I can ship it back to Krups or return it to the repair center again. Decided not to spend any more time or money on a Krups product.

1.0 out of 5 stars Can I please enter negative stars? Bad, unpleasant unit, July 12, 2003
I had high hopes for the DuoThek solving several problems:
1. I like to brew tea, but it's a bit of a hassle.
2. I like to drink brewed coffee and need a nice coffee pot.
3. When we have company, it's nice to be able to brew more than a few cups at a time.

However, this unit suffered from huge design flaws and doesn't meet the excellent quality I've had from all other Krups appliances I've ever owned. The DuoThek, in fact, was purchased (and returned) to replace a Krups espresso/coffeemaker that we've now stuck with, even though we don't use the espresso side at all.

Among the myriad flaws with this unit
* No instructions were included about using the tea brewing attachment
* Illustrations and manual didn't match what was shipped
* Cheap, flimsy plastic parts covered with dust and easy to get dirty
* No -- I repeat! -- no automatic shutoff! We almost destroyed one carafe on the first day because of this basic missing safety feature
* Coffee quality is ok, but not wonderful
* Parts don't fit together well: the swing out filter baskets lock into place on my current Krups; these kind of mush in.

Don't buy it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ten Oompa Loompa Cups, February 28, 2005
By

(REAL NAME)
The Krups 464 is a perfectly competent coffeemaker that doesn't offer any surprises, either good or bad -- unless of course you think you are going to get, ahem, ten cups out of each carafe.

CUP SIZE
Portion size varies by culture, but here the "10 cup" designation clearly comes from the department of wishful thinking. In a world of super-size mugs, they are still thinking demitasse.

DESIGN & BUILD
The plastic water well cover is thinner gauge and somewhat softer plastic than is found on the rest of the machine. These qualities make it easier to pop off for cleaning, but don't translate into a "high quality" feel. In fact, the whole appliance is surprisingly light in weight.

The carafes are excellent, and the best thing about the 464. I couldn't get them to dribble even when I tried, which is more than you can say about a lot of coffeemakers when you're just trying to pour properly.

COFFEE QUALITY
Most modern coffee makers (unless calcified or broken) will make a perfectly acceptable cup of coffee, imparting no taste of their own. This is no different. The quality of the coffee you'll pour is thus mostly dependent on the quality of the coffee and water. Note: I use the gold-tone filters which let some very fine grounds through; your experience with paper filters may vary.

DECAF DRINKERS STILL NEED A SIGN
The obvious use for a two carafe device, aside from tea & coffee, is to have one side for regular and the other for decaffeinated. A simple slide-open indicator (universal orange) to indicate which one is decaf would seem a no-brainer, but none is present. Sigh.

CONCLUSION
The 464 is a competent, pleasant coffemaker at a premium price. The style, name, and well designed carafes should make this a buy for many.
