Good for the money -- Throw away the instructions,
By Gustibus "review this product" (Seattle, WA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Krups XP2070 Programmable 10-Cup Coffeemaker/15-Bar Pump Espresso Machine (Kitchen)
I was and still am deeply suspicious of these combo units, but this one has been a pleasant surprise. All of the basic functions work admirably and it does a wonderful job of frothing even low fat milk. The espresso maker is a little less forgiving of your tamping skills than other machines I've used, but when you get it right the crema is beautiful.
I have only had this for 3 months, so I can't vouch for longevity of the machine, but it seems to be sturdy and well made. The problem I have is with the computer program that operates everything. It is perhaps the most non-intuitive, least user-friendly design I have ever come across on any home appliance. The functions themselves should be fairly straightforward -- push a button -- but require you to learn the secret code of whomever designed it. Add to that the fact that the instructions are WRONG. I can handle them being written by a non-English speaker, I'm used to that. But they can at least be accurate. Helpful tip - when frothing milk, after the steam has built up and the flashing light begins to glow continuously, DO NOT push the "steam" button again as the instructions indicate. Push the "Valid" button instead. However, once you get the secret code down, this machine works well. Compared to other combo units I highly recommend.

Loved my machine - why'd it stop working today after only 9 months?,
This review is from: Krups XP2070 Programmable 10-Cup Coffeemaker/15-Bar Pump Espresso Machine (Kitchen)
My husband and I registered for this at Crate & Barrel and have been thrilled with it for 9 months now. I did immediately notice, however, that the carafe is made from very thin glass and was always scared I would break it. Other than that, the only problem I had with it was when pouring a cup of coffee, 9 times out of 10 it would leak over the sides and onto the counter if you didn't pour very slowly and sometimes even that didn't help. I just made a mental note that our next machine might be an upgrade from Krups or something like that, but still LOVED this machine. Imagine my horror when today, after our morning pot of coffee, it just completely stopped working! I unplugged it, changed outlets, nothing. The led display is just dead. The machine is dead. I've checked it every hour or so today. Nada. After doing some research online, I now see that is a common theme with this machine among people who've had it a while (the earliest I read of it happening was 5 months). I descaled it with vinegar every 3 months or so. Nothing in the manual addresses this situation. So, here I sit with a cup of Starbucks, writing this review. Starbucks just doesn't measure up anymore to having my fresh ground Kona coffee and espresso (not to mention lattes and cappuccinos!) each day....very disappointed.
UPDATE (7.11.08): We called, found we were within 3 days of waranty expiring, so sent it in to a local, authrized Krups repair shop..it came back in about a week, worked for 2 pots of coffee, then broke again. We called the shop and were told to send in again. This time it's worked (still working) for 3 weeks..now the black plastic lid above the filter area is warped and sticks/pops when you open it to put water/coffee inside. I should also mention that when they sent it back to us, they wrapped it with a plastic film and it apparently had moisture inside because now the machine has water stains all over it and looks pretty bad. I think we're giving this machine away when we move next month..did I say how it smokes and huffs/puffs when it's brewing (and it's descaled regulary)? It's too bad, because this machine looked great to start with and had such great potential!

Broke within a week,
By They also said they had no information on troubleshooting the machine "because we just introduced it." It seems that any decent machine testing would check to see that you could turn on the machine. Please do not make the same mistake I did, especially with a holiday gift!

OMG It's a Trend! Krups XP2070 is a POS!,
This review is from: Krups XP2070 Programmable 10-Cup Coffeemaker/15-Bar Pump Espresso Machine (Kitchen)
Holy espresso! This was a birthday gift from my husband in November 2006, as soon as this product came out. Well, it died yesterday after making it's last pot of coffee...yep, $300 machine & no power, no lights, no display. I tried plugging it in every outlet I could get to & nothing. So I just got done giving the not-so-sympathetic Krups customer service reps & supervisors a piece of my mind. I mean seriously...$300 & it lasted barely 16 months & they WON'T fix it, even under their "courtesy" warranty. That's NOT acceptable. I guess I'll be dragging out my 17 year old Braun 12-cup to do the job for now. Makes a nice doorstop I guess, albeit an expensive one. & BTW, it never really did make good espresso, the coffee carafe broke after only 1 week (paper thin glass) & it drips like crazy when you pour out of it anyhow. This is one expensive POS & Krups lost any future biz from me - this was their one & only chance to make things right & they blew it big time...

Was Fine While it Worked ......,
By DW "DW" (PA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Krups XP2070 Programmable 10-Cup Coffeemaker/15-Bar Pump Espresso Machine (Kitchen)
I must echo the comments in previous reviews. This is a fine machine at first -- does the job and does it well -- but the instructions were very complicated, the pot is poorly designed & you end up pouring just as much coffee on the counter as you do in your cup, and after 4 months of use, mine just stopped working. I really thought this $300 machine would be the last coffee maker I would have to purchase for awhile considering my $50.00 "Mr Coffee" machine worked for 5 years and is now being used as my "backup" while I try to get a resolution with Krups. (Thank goodness I decided to hold onto it!!)
Think twice before sinking so much money into this product.

As Bad as It Gets,

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I owned a Salton 3 for All over 10 years old. I thought that with the purchase of this Krups unit I'd be moving up in the world. Boy was I disappointed. The steamer has a detachable nozzle which frequently pops off while frothing milk, splattering everything nearby. The Salton had a 4 shot capacity while this makes only 2 shots at a time, and weaker at that. The Salton for its $99 price included a carafe and steamer jug. You'll have to purchase these separately from Krups. Krups recommends purchase of a separate water filter for the water reservoir for the espresso unit. When it's in place the pump can't draw water through it. I brew espresso every morning. I don't understand how anyone could rate this product favorably if they reguarly make espresso. However the coffee unit works well. I've never written a review for Amazon before. The poor quality of this product motivated me.

A Very Decorative Paperweight,
By
This review is from: Krups XP2070 Programmable 10-Cup Coffeemaker/15-Bar Pump Espresso Machine (Kitchen)
I received this product from my wife as a gift about a year ago. Actually really liked the machine once I learned the quirks of using it. We descaled it (both sides) about every 2 weeks and rarely had trouble. Then one day, it just didn't turn on. No lights, no LED, nothing. Just a stainless steel brick.
Still have not heard what the issue is from Krups, or how much it will cost to fix. From what I've read and now my own experience, it seems it's just another product from Krups that went to market before it was sufficiently tested.

Absolute garbage,

This review is from: Krups XP2070 Programmable 10-Cup Coffeemaker/15-Bar Pump Espresso Machine (Kitchen)
This machine is absolute garbage. There are not enough pejoratives or expletives in the world for me to describe my feelings for this device with anything like the right level of detail.
The user interface is like trying to decode an alien artifact. The manual is terrible. The customer service and support is unbelievably bad. It is unreliable and expensive. Get a different espresso machine, go to a coffeeshop, heck, boil coffee in a 55 gallon drum over a pile of oily rags - any of these is a much more satisfactory way to get a coffee drink than using this (insert chain of imaginative diminutives) thing.

DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM!!!!,
By
This review is from: Krups XP2070 Programmable 10-Cup Coffeemaker/15-Bar Pump Espresso Machine (Kitchen)
I had to rate this item with one star to submit the review, but I wouldn't even give it that much. Do not even think about buying this item... I wouldn't even buy another Krups product after owning this machine. I used to think Krups was a decent brand, but after this machine, I see that Krups should be called KRAPS.
We bought this machine in December 2008 and loved it. Then one night I got the great idea to fill it and set the timer so it would be ready in the morning when I woke up. Instead of finding hot brewed coffee in the morning, I found a counter and floor covered in water. Thinking that I may have mispoured the water into the reservoir, I tried again the next night. Same thing - ok, I won't do that again - not a huge issue, but that sucks. In March 2009, the machine just quits working. The electronics are shot. I unplug it, plug it back in, move it to a new outlet, let it "rest" for a week and plug it back in ... absolutely nothing. So here is where Krups' customer service really impressed me. Keep in mind that I did plenty of online research for this particular model before calling Krups and in about 20 minutes I found approximately 100 postings with similar complaints. (I should have done my research before buying this model) I call to ask about returning it under warranty and they tell me that is no problem. I have to pay to ship it to them, they'll try to fix it and if they can't fix it, they'll send me a new one. I tell them that I don't want a new one because of the amount of poor reviews I've seen. In all the reviews I see that a new one is sent, it breaks also but by then it's out of warranty and the individual is out of luck. It's obviously a defective model and I want my money back. Krups won't give me my money back because there hasn't been a recall. I ask what it takes for there to be a recall because it seems to me there are plenty of customers with the same complaint. They tell me there doesn't seem to be a problem and that is a small percentage compared to their overall sales. Ok, maybe people are just complaining online but sucking up their losses. After going back and forth for several minutes I realize the girl is just a low-paid secretary with no people skills so I ask to speak to her supervisor or someone else with a modicum of authority. She tells me that nobody is available and that if I give her my number someone will call within 24 hours. What other choice do I have, so I leave my number. Nobody returns my call. Again, this is just like the other 100 reviews I found. Matter of fact, the Better Business Bureau has the same types of complaints written on their website. So I turn to Bed, Bath and Beyond, where we bought the Krups machine, as a last resort. They were absolutely wonderful. They took the Krap machine back without a receipt and with only one question, "What is wrong with it." I told them all about what was wrong with it and highly recommended that they quit carrying the product. I am now a happy and loyal customer ... to Bed Bath and Beyond ... and NOT EVER TO KRUPS again. I only hope that Krups bring themselves into the 21st century and do a little research of their own. They should also invest in a higher quality of customer service if they want to keep or even boost their business. |
