5.0 out of 5 stars Uber chain
This Padlock/chain combo is great. It's heavy duty and quick to use. There isn't much fumbling around.

The only drawback is that it's a short chain.

For the price and utility this product is awesome! It'[s a great value.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good chain. Bad lock., August 8, 2009

This chain is great. It would keep my bike safe from most theifs. But the disc lock is terrible for locking up chains. With the disk lock, the hook of the lock goes into the lock itself. Therefore, you have nothing to hook the chain on to! You are stuck trying to grip to ends of the chain, holding the two links in the perfect position to allow the lock's latch to slide into. And you have to balance the lock in place. While all that's happening, you then must turn the key to bring the latch outside of the lock and through the two chains.

If you want the chain, buy it. But also buy a different lock, unless you want to be seen struggling for 2 minutes every time you want to lock up your bike.

1.0 out of 5 stars The chain is okay, but the lock is a dud., August 18, 2010
This review is from: Kryptonite Keeper 880 Chain & Padlock (Sports)
I lost the key to my chain/lock set, so I went to the locksmith to see if a new one could be made. Since it was locked, he wasn't able to make a key. He offered to cut the lock for a few bucks. I figured it'd take a little while since it was a Kryptonite. Wrong. In literally 5 seconds, he had clamped on a big pair of bolt cutters and snapped the lock. It surprises me that a major company like Kryptonite would produce such an easy to cut lock in this day and age. As other reviewers have pointed out, the chain is fine (albeit a bit short), but upgrade the lock if you live in a high theft area. Yes, the set is pretty cheap, but a better lock will be cheaper than buying a new bike.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good alternative to a u-lock, October 3, 2010

Moderately priced u-locks aren't very reliable. I can't speak to the really expensive ones (never owned one) but the last $40 one I had literally fell apart in less than two years. A chain and a padlock may be less secure, but they're more reliable and more flexible. This chain is the same length as a large u-lock, but you can get it into more awkward spaces. I agree the padlock is a little awkward to operate at first, but I got used to it quickly. Great for commuting, where my bike is in a garage at home and at work. But I wouldn't rely on it to keep an expensive bike safe outside overnight.

I like this lock. Its definately solid. Links are thick. Over 1/4 inch. The worst thing about the lock is something that another review mentioned which is that its not the easist thing to get the chains in the lock because to close the shackle you need to turn the key. Creativity takes care of that problem though. I just turn the shackle so its partially out then slide the second chain in and finish turning the lock.

If I had to rate the weak point of this lock and chain set its the lock in my opinion. The positive is that the exposed portion of the shackle is minimal and the chains cover most of it, forcing you either to be very detailed at getting bolt cutters to the lock or attack the chain. The fabric covering over the chain adds more than looking nice, its an additional deterant. It basically makes it more difficult to cut plus makes it more difficult to get a good leverage on the chain to cut the chain link.

In all this is a vital portion of my bike's security system. Especially for those of you out there like me with expensive bikes, or high target bikes, be smart. This lock shouldn't be the only lock. It should only be a portion of your locking system. For me my locking system includes this, a Master Lock Street Cuff (purchased on Amazon, see my review), and a Bell 'U' lock and cable. I trust this lock, but more than that I trust that I have 3 locks, with three different methods of being defeated. All locks eventually have weak points and weaknesses, your system's best strength is the amount of time to completely dismantle/disable your locks, and this lock will add to that time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not too shabby...., July 15, 2009

It's a pretty nice lock, heavy duty and looks like it would be hard as heck to bust apart or cut in any way. It's a bit heavy but I knew what I was getting based on the product description(3lbs).

My only real gripe is that it is kind of hard to lock as you have to fit a link through a link and turn a key while catching the open ended link with the rotating lock. Kind of hard to describe but tricky to do with just two hands(you three handed people will have no trouble with this lock:). I still think for the money it was a good buy and hopefully I will eventually get the hang of locking it quickly(owned for about three months now with moderate use).

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible chain, September 24, 2010
This review is from: Kryptonite Keeper 880 Chain & Padlock (Sports)
I purchased this product to lock my $50 bike in a medium sized city. Within two months of using it, this chain was cut by a thief. They even left a severed chain link so I know it was the chain that was cut.

The lock is also very difficult to attach onto the chain, since the shackle retreats into the lock housing, but I believe this was done purposefully to reduce length of exposed shackle. Lot of good that did, since the chain was severed easily.... Stay away from cheap chains!

3.0 out of 5 stars Short Chain, February 9, 2010

I just got this chain last night, so I haven't tried it in the field, yet. But I just wanted to point out that the chain is pretty short (30 inches). It's really too short to wrap it around your bike tires, frame AND a pole or rack -- It just doesn't have the length.

Probably works best as a supplement to another chain or lock. As someone else mentioned, the padlock is kind of hard to loop into the chain links, the way it's designed. For another option, look at the Abus Steel-O-Chain 880. It has a lock integrated into the chain itself.

3.0 out of 5 stars Needs Finessing, but Otherwise Functional., April 13, 2011
This review is from: Kryptonite Keeper 880 Chain & Padlock (Sports)
The hackle on the padlock is so short - I understand that is a theft deterrent, but it increases the amount of time that it takes for me to lock/unlock my bike, in itself a security risk of another nature.
I like the flexibility of the chain though, it's better than my old U-lock, I can stuff it in to smaller bags more easily, and the nylon sleeve over it helps protect the chain from nicking the paint on my bike.
