The key will not open the lock.

That being said, I've had this lock for a about a week now and it works very well so far.

Small enough to fit on the frame of the bike easily.

Everyone looking for a cable lock should already know that ALL you expect is a minor deterrent, and ALL you can use this for is to secure your front tire to the bike frame. This cannot be expected to be a primary security device to secure your bike.

For your PRIMARY security device, you need to get a Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboutit Mini Bicycle U-Lock (3.25 x 6-Inch), or something very close to that.

What you need in a cable lock:
1. convenience: has to have mount with easy on/off
2. small size: so that it can be mounted to frame easily (the Kryptonite Hardwire 2510 Key Cable Bicycle Lock is a perfect example of what NOT to get. Way too big and unwieldy.
3. KEY (all combination locks can be defeated just by pulling on them and turning the tumblers)
4. Advantage goes to locks that can be closed WITHOUT having the key inserted. Believe me - it's a huge advantage.

With that in mind, this cable lock fills it's role perfectly.
Small enough to fit on the frame of the bike easily. It's as large and secure as you'll ever get in a cable lock and still be able to use it. Example: I have the Hardwire 2510 also, but it is just too too large to fit on the bike frame, and is very inconvenient to use. I bought this afterwards, and it is what I will use instead, just to secure my front tire. The NY Fahgettaboutit secures the frame. It is a HUGE advantage that you can close it without having the key in the lock (UNlike the 2510).

Thick cable but more than half of diameter is plastic/rubber. Very thin wire, parked bike in front of building with cameras. Took someone a few seconds to cut through the lock.

This cable seems to be secure, but it is very annoying to use. It does not uncoil. When you try to wrap it around things, it is constantly snapping back at you into a coil, preventing you from stringing the end through holes or around objects. You have to really wrestle with it in order to get it wrapped around and through objects the way you want.

If you live in an area where bicycle theft might be a problem, this lock is not secure enough. My Trek was stolen in less than 2 weeks when I left it locked to a bicycle rack during the day while at work. Not such a bad neighborhood. Bad luck, though!

I live in New York City's borough of Queens and needed a "casual" lock for my bike. Remember that security and convenience are inversely proportional. This integrated cable/lock combination is exactly what I need for a quick lock-up of my bike while I dash into a store or stop at the Post Office, but it is not the pinnacle of high security.

I purchased this exact model from a local bike shop a few years ago, not from Amazon. Before this cable, I had a huge, heavy U-lock which I used along with an extremely thin cable - I forget what brand the U-lock was, it was bought in 1991 along with my bike. That U-lock clipped onto a frame bracket. I hated it; it was heavy and it rattled and if I wasn't sure I was going to lock up my bike I'd just leave it at home. I lost it during an interstate move about a decade ago, and while I replaced that U-lock with a much better one (the mini New York from Kryptonite) I also got this cable instead of a thin cable which could only be used with the U-lock or some padlock.

The cable I bought did not come with a mounting bracket, although I understand this one from Amazon does. My cable lives inside the trunk bag on top of my rear rack, along with other necessities like my patch kit and mini pump. It's small enough and light enough to always have with me, so I can make unplanned or short stops with a fair degree of security. It doesn't rattle around and there's still plenty of space in my trunk for little things I might pick up at a store during my trip. The cable is also easy to carry wrapped around my bike frame or my shoulder if I need that little bit of extra space in my trunk.

No cable or chain can take the place of a good U-lock for top security.

A week after I received this lock, my bike was stolen. We saw the security camera later, the thief took 2 minutes to open this lock.

Very sad, and disappointed. I recommend not to buy it.

I locked my bike up in a secured bike storage area. It was safe for a couple of months until someone cut the cable and stole my brand new bike. Please, don't waste your money on this lock. If you care about your bike, spend some money and invest in a serious, serious lock.

Using this lock, I fastened my bike to a bike rack in front of a busy grocery store in Marina del Rey, Calif. I came back after 10 minutes of shopping, and it was gone. MDR is a wealthy area, which likely makes it a thief magnet, rather than a low theft zone. A replay of the store's security monitor showed a guy in black taking at most five seconds to cut through the cable and ride away. This is a worthless lock, and it's not suitable for ANY area, rich or poor. Strangely, some bikes were parked near mine without being locked, and they weren't touched. The 1218 apparently screams "This Bike Is Yours" to any thief who knows how useless it is.
