First off, it's kind of hard to truly review a lock based on pre-theft attempt performance. I mean, really what matters is that one unlikely day when someone tries to steal my bike and did they succeed or not?

That out of the way, it's hard not to be impressed by this thing.

1) The links are gigantic. If you know how big an iPhone is, then you know basically how large ONE link is...yeah, huge. (Links are a couple of mm smaller than iPhone, but you get the idea.)
2) The sleeve is nice and helps keep the bike from being scratched.
3) The lock itself is also quite huge. It's covered with a thick plastic sheath that itself appears to encase a metal sheath. As you can see in the stock pictures, these sheaths extend up to make getting a pry bar in there very difficult. In fact it's almost hard to lock it, but that's a good thing in this case.
4) It's heavy, as noted in other reviews. For me, I've transported it in a backpack which is basically dedicated to holding the Legend. I can't imaging putting it in a backpack with tons of other things, like electronics or your lunch. Those things might get crushed. (I have a pannier on the way that will replace my backpack method.)
5) This goes out to all lock manufacturers: Why can't you make an all-metal key? There's always this disclaimer in the instructions that the keys might break if turned prematurely. But that's because they're made with cheap plastic handles. I paid over a hundred dollars for this Legend: can I please have all-metal keys? Even if it costs an extra, I don't know, $5 bucks I'd be ok with that. (All manufacturers are like this --not going to dock review stars.)
6) This is the shorter model of the two Legends. I find it barely fits through my frame, back wheel and the secure pole.

i have a shared garage and have had many things stolen. I then bought a nice new bike and this new lock. I've had it for almost 6 mo. and nobody has touched my bike.

I watched YT videos about how it can actually be broken in like 5 mins. but its enough of a deterrent to scare away my neighborhood garage-vandals in San Francisco.

Would not buy this if i left my bike on the street for a long time as it CAN be broken- just a lot harder than a normal bike lock/chain.

Would buy again if i got another bike.

The Kryptonite NY Legend 1590 chain and padlock is everything I expected. I bought it to lock up a new scooter at a downtown university in a big city. No worries about theft. It totally outclasses all of the other locks I've seen on the other bikes/scooters. I would not want to pedal around on a bike with this weight but it's great for a motorbike/scooter. Kryptonite has plenty of other good choices for bicycles.

The 15-mm-thick hardened-steel links on this 10-pound beast slide uncooperatively when you try to violate them. Bust the plastic off the dead bolt and it reveals a scarier-looking steel shackle. My bike is safe ;-)

(+) Cylinder has a drill-resistant protection system. $4,500 antitheft protection;

(-) Literally heavier than some bikes.

Weighing around 10 lbs, this lock makes for a really heavy bicycle lock. I'd only recommend this lock if you own a really expensive bicycle and want to keep it safe within the cities with the highest bicycle theft rates (NYC, San Francisco, Chicago, etc.).

The inside of the lock can rust, but that is to be expected because the steel is hardened so much that I don't think a rust proof plating would adhere to it (I'm not a chemist, but that's why I think Kryptonite doesn't do it). Lubricate the lock with oil or grease, and you it should be good to go.

The length is too short to wrap around your waist--even a 30" waist is too large. if you replaced the lock with an evolution series disk lock, then I think you can do it, but with the legend series disk lock, it's practically impossible because you have to intertwine the links to be able to lock it. Security wise, this is definitely a good design, but for transportation, it's a no-go.

The key slot is protected with a plastic sliding cover. It's way better then the New York Fahgettaboudit Mini, but it's nothing to cheer about.

The links are 15 mm, and the shackle (on the lock) is 16 mm. This should be enough, but if you're looking for better, I'd suggest giving Almax Security Chains a look--they make the best chains for anti theft purposes. I must admit though, I think their chains are overkill for bicycles.

Overall this lock is best for those that really want to keep their bike safe, but if you're looking for another alternative, I'd suggest giving New York Fahgettaboudit Mini a buy. It's got an 18 mm shackle and is only half the weight of this chain. It's a little hard to find things to secure your bike to (because of it's dimensions), but it's definitely more convenient to use than the New York Legend 1590.

Great Product, really well made and ease of use. Only problem is, bought the product without looking hard enough, and didn't realise the sheer size of it, it weighs 5kg, so not really practical in carrying around to use daily.
