I am impressed by the overall design of this product. The mounting bracket attaches very easily to water bottle cage mounts, and the lock is held onto the bike by the lock itself, without a separate bracket. It is handy to be able to access the lock without digging into a bag.
I think having the two separate cables make it easier and faster to lock up than if I had to wind one cable all through everything. I haven't considered carrying just one of the cables. One not-so-good thing is that on my bike, a 56 cm Surly LHT, the coils of this lock bumps into the other water bottle cage and make it stick out a little to one side, meaning my leg brushes against it sometimes. It is not quite as unobtrusive as I had hoped. I have had it mounted on my downtube, and I noticed that it obscures my vision of my front derailleur and chain rings, making it more difficult to fine-tune the derailleur placement while riding. Another thing I am not so happy about is the time required to unlock, coil, and secure the cables to get on my way. I will get faster with practice, but the issue is that because the lock is already fairly bulky, you have to coil the cables a certain way, orient the cable ends so they plug in, and lash them together. Otherwise, they can flop around and would definitely bump your leg on every stroke. The single cable design could have the advantage in this area, but I haven't tried it. If what you are after is quick and convenient security, you could get the same level of security or better, more quickly, by just carrying a U lock or a more normal cable lock in a bag...assuming you are already carrying a bag every time you get on your bike. On the other hand, if you don't want a bag hanging off your shoulders and this lock design solves that problem for you, go for it. I plan to continue using this for daily commuting and errand running and I should get faster at the locking and unlocking/wrapping. It is not so practical for touring because it takes up a water bottle cage mount, but it seems easy enough to remove and reinstall once in a while for the longer trips I do.

The 3.5 foot cables are a pain to use. They like to retain thier curled shape like a pubic hair on steroids. When you try to thread the cables through your bike & around a pole, you have to pull & fight the cable if you want to go through your wheels.
I bought two 5 foot modulus cables & the single 6 footer. The 3.5 footers stay at home in the garage, I never use them anymore. |
