1.0 out of 5 stars Does NOT fit the older INTEX pools!!
I purchased this pump as a replacement for our Intex pool that we have had for the past 3 years. It is the recommended replacement pump but unfortunately Intex has changed the design of their pools since ours was made.
I have rigged it to be used but was unable to attach it according to the instructions because the sides of our pool do NOT have the reinforced holes...

First of all, this "toy" does not exhibit a "fun" value, nor does it have an "educational" value, but I couldn't post this review without giving it a star rating...LOL.

I have this pump that came with my easy-set, metal-frame pool. It works great, but not without other regular maintanence tasks that is required to keep your pool clean and healthy. Sounds like the previous reviewers expect the filter to work on its own, continuously, like with an in-ground pool. This is not the case.

As for the one previous reviewer that says it doesn't filter sediment, that's because you need to use the vacuum. The vacuum (at least with my pool) had a separate canister, whereby you insert a tighly-woven mesh bag, and connect the hoses to the filter and vacuum the pool bottom. I do this every 2-3 days, depending on pool usage. Plus, it's very helpful to have a tub of clean water for pool users to rinse their feet before climbing the ladder to enter the pool. This had cut down the sediment problem immensely.

At any rate, after a thorough vacuuming of the pool bottom, I find that the mesh bag is loaded with sediment and other stuff. After vacuuming, I switch the vacuum canister with the skimmer piece and let the filter run 6-8 hours (overnight works well for me).

Another problem that may inhibit the filter's function for the previous reviewers is you cannot leave the filter connected to the pool hoses 24/7. The filter cartridge stays submerged and will eventually mold - greatly reducing the filtering rate and getting yucky water slowly filtering back into the pool when you do turn the filter pump on. This happened with another friend of mine and once he started disconnecting hoses and changing the canisters more frequently, the problem stopped.

You need to close the plunger valves, disconnect the hose from the filter (I leave the other end attached to the plungers)and open the side valve on the filter to fully drain the water. From there, I check the status of the filter cartridge -- sometimes it can last 2-3 filtering runs (when I leave it on over night) and other times, it needs immediate replacing. During heavy usage months, I go through a least 1-2 cartridges a week.

Also, by disconnecting the hose from the filter itself, you can check the outside connection point. Sometimes I find grass blades (that slithered through the skimmer) trapped and blocking the intake point to the filter. However, this is rare. I also put chlorine shock through my skimmer, while the filter is on, once a week. This helps to keep the filter mechanisms cleaned, too.

Having a pool is lots of fun for my family and their friends, that come over...but, with the fun, comes responsibility. Maintaining proper PH/chlorine levels is an absolute must. High PH reading with not only affect the clarity of your water and the comfort of your swimmers, but the acidic reading (PH 7.8 and higher) will wear out the filter as the acid water goes through.

Invest in a 3-way pool kit (about $10) and check the PH and chlorine daily. This will help prolong the life of your pool and the filter. Once the pool is stabilized (the PH and Chlorine levels are harmonized), this routine maintanence doesn't take long. Frequent and proper filtering, vacuuming, chlorine (some people use the floating duck to slowly dissolve chlorine daily...for me, I do a weekly shock treatment instead without problems) will keep everyone happy.

If you are not diligent with the pool upkeep, then you will have problems with algae, etc... and will end up wasting water from having to drain it and start over. Good luck!

1.0 out of 5 stars Does NOT fit the older INTEX pools!!, July 2, 2008

I have rigged it to be used but was unable to attach it according to the instructions because the sides of our pool do NOT have the reinforced holes. The older pools had a short black tubing that slid into the white hoses.
I just wanted to warn others of the mistake that I made by assuming that no major design changes had occurred with the Intex 16' pools.

This was exactly how online purchases should go. Good communication from the seller, quick and inexpensive shipping and a correct order delivered to my door. Very pleased with the pump as it was the perfect replacement model for ours that went bad. We have been enjoying the summer in the pool almost every day. Thanks!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Impressed!!! Worked with Intex 48"x16' 2008 Pool!!, July 28, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Krystal Klear Wet Set 1500 Gallon Intex Pool Filter Pump
As I live in Louisiana, the weather tends to be unpredictable, very hot (generally 100 degrees daily), humid, and it rains a lot. Our 48" x 16' Intex pool is under many older tall oak and palm trees along with tropical plants planted around it. I wanted to get a pump that was more powerful with more GPH pressure. The original pump, that being a 1000GPH pump wasn't sending debris, i.e. dirt, leaves, etc. into the skimmer moreover the mess would end up on the bottom of the pool. We would have to vacuum it daily; this begin to become bothersome.

We have the Intex Saltwater System (very impressed with this product as well) and we never have any issues with chemical levels! The pump fit all the pool hoses that came with the pool back in 2008. The intake hose (hose from the skimmer to the pump) has an inside piece which I removed (small white little fitting), once removing the little inside hose piece, it fit onto this pump snugly. I placed a clamp around it to insure no water would leak. I had no problems with the hose connecting to the Salt Water System- it screwed perfectly into place and took less than 15 minutes to do!

As we have been having tropical storm like weather this past week (high winds, large amounts of rainfall, etc.), I am very impressed with this new 1500GPH pump and the ability it has to get all the leaves and dirt to the skimmer before settling down to the bottom of the pool. Since the weather has been severe, no one has been in the pool for a week and it looks cleaner than I have ever seen it. The pump does have a timer on it but we keep this pump on 24 hours per day and the Salt Water System for 8 hours in the early morning (from 2am-10am). All pool levels are correct, never a algae problem and very simple to maintain.

We have had the pump for two weeks and I just changed out the filter last night. When using the 1000GPH pump, I was changing the filter out daily! This new pump is well worth the price and I suggest anyone whom may be interested in it purchase it now!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money, May 23, 2010
This review is from: Krystal Klear Wet Set 1500 Gallon Intex Pool Filter Pump
Worked for one season, then the impeller blades disintegrated - and Intex doesn't sell replacement impellers. Better to look for a better quality pump by a different manufacturer.

2.0 out of 5 stars worn out, August 30, 2008
This review is from: Krystal Klear Wet Set 1500 Gallon Intex Pool Filter Pump
I bought this pump to replace the too small filter pump that came with our intex pool. It worked great for 2 months then the impeller disintigrated and I have not been able to get a replacement part. I guess the people at Intex think that no one is capable of removing for screws to remove and insert a new impeller. What a waiste of resources, to make a pump and expect it to be disposable after every season. I have had the pool for 3 years and have been through 3 filter pumps. In the long run it would have been more economical to spend a couple hundred dollars on a quality pump which has replacable parts.

1.0 out of 5 stars waste of $$$, July 24, 2007
= Durability:1.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:1.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Krystal Klear Wet Set 1500 Gallon Intex Pool Filter Pump
this pump is pitiful... it doesn't filter sediment. The customer service rep for Intex told me to put a stocking over the filter to help filter the sediment. WHAT A JOKE. And to make matters worse, they may replace the pump and filter - but who wants a pump that DOESN"T work.
Anyhoo - I don't know if the bigger pump is better, but won't have a choice but to buy it.
Good luck

The product didn't last more than an hour. Called the customer service more than a month, still haven't got the replacement. I talked to vendor they said almost 90% products are failing!

What a waste.

2.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't circulate water, July 12, 2011
This review is from: Krystal Klear Wet Set 1500 Gallon Intex Pool Filter Pump
I have a 20X20X4 above ground pool, and this is the filter that came with it. It is not strong enough to pull the water through the vacuum hose. Also, my pool gets scummy on the far side from the pump/out and intake valves. I guess it's because it can;t circulate the water from that far away. When I shock treat it by putting the shock in the skimmer as recommended, I can see that the shock doesn't get to the other side of the pool. It's a disappointment because they sell this pump with the pool. I honestly think they ought to sell a more powerful unit. I had an old intex pool that I bought a number of years ago and finally replaced because the plastic parts and pump dry-rotted. It was fantastic, and the pump was much bigger, even though it was only an 18 foot pool. I think Intex has gotten 'cheaper' with the pump they supply.
