5.0 out of 5 stars A fine mid-sized pressure cooker, January 13, 2005

This review is from: Kuhn Rikon 3043 Duromatic 6.3-Quart (6-Liter) Stockpot Pressure Cooker (Kitchen)
I am extremely pleased with this item. I learned how to pressure cook with this pot, and now I can have osso buco ready in well under an hour; and I actually prefer it done in the pressure cooker!

Get a Lorna Sass cookbook and go to town with this baby. My only caveat: I usually cook for just two or three, and the size of this pot is fine for that. Most recipes are written for a six quart pressure cooker anyway. Still, there are a few times I wish the cooker was a little bigger so I could cook a larger volume--making stock, for instance, or making a big batch of chili.

If you're cooking for more than a few, you might consider the 8 qt model. That's not a criticism of this pot at all--I wouldn't part with it. It's a tool in my kitchen which I use often, sometimes several times a week. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars I wish I had found this pressure cooker when I bought my first one, December 29, 2006

This review is from: Kuhn Rikon 3043 Duromatic 6.3-Quart (6-Liter) Stockpot Pressure Cooker (Kitchen)
This is my second pressure cooker. My first was a Fagor of the same size that I bought about 10 years ago and finally started to not work well.

This one is so much easier to use. It's easy to see when the proper amount of pressure is built up and I like the fact that it isn't as heavy as my first one. This allows it to cool down naturally within a reasonable amount of time. It's also easier to open and close. I can see why people love this brand. I just ordered and received my second Kuhn Rikon cooker, a 4 quart version so that I can cook two things at the same time that require different cooking times.

I made perfect brown rice in 20 minutes and it didn't stick to the bottom like it does in my rice cooker. Since it takes about 45 minutes in the rice cooker, I doubt that I'll ever use that appliance again. It really turned out better in the pressure cooker.

Update 9/29/08 - I've been using this and the 4 quart Kuhn Rikon pressure cooker at least a couple times a week since I purchased them. With high energy costs these really save a bundle. I find once the pressure is built up, I can turn the heat on my electric stove down just about to simmer to finish the cooking as opposed to having it on medium or high for a much longer period of time. They still look great after all this use and are very easy to clean. I often make my dogs food in them using chicken, vegetables and rice. It cooks so quickly!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Whole Different Ballgame, February 8, 2011
This review is from: Kuhn Rikon 3043 Duromatic 6.3-Quart (6-Liter) Stockpot Pressure Cooker (Kitchen)
I bought this pressure cooker from a local kitchen store (same price as Amazon) and love it. I had a jiggler type before and this changes everything. With my old PC I had to be very careful to add enough water so that it didn't run out. Also, foamy items caused problems by clogging the valve. The K-R maintains pressure not by a release but by temperature moderation. You can cook using very little water because the water has nowhere to go. Some of the highly rated, but less expensive cookers still use some steam release method, which is way worse. Since the steam is trapped inside the K-R the flavors and vitamins are as well, meaning you get tastier, healthier food.

It's a bit tricky to determine the right settings on your stove (ours is old and uses buttons, only 5 settings), but once you do the pressure cooker is super easy to use. I only used my old one for beans, but I have already cooked risotto (soooo much easier than the old fashioned way) and steel cut oats in mine. I haven't yet used it for meat or stock, but I'll do the stock this week. Edit: I have now used this to cook both veggie and chicken stock. I can't say that I'll never buy boxed stock again, but this makes homemade stock a simple and quick process. Any stock that you make at home is going to be much more healthy and better tasting than one that comes in a box. We will try to always keep some stock in the freezer for soup making, which can also be done in the pressure cooker.

The reviewer above noted the size issue. At 2/3 full (the limit) you'd have over a gallon of volume, which is a pretty big bunch of soup. At 1/2 full for rice or beans youd'd have 8 cups of either. This may not be enough for two nights for a family of 4, but it's nothing to sneeze at. As our kids get older, I can imagine adding an 8 or 12 liter cooker to the arsenal.

I purchased this pressure cooker as a gift because I have used an identical one for years and can appreciate its value. It's more expensive than other cookers on the market; however, it will give you many years of fast, healthy cooking! The Kuhn Rikon pressure gauge is lots more accurate than the cheaper-to-manufacture "rocking" gauges. Great little cooker. I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't be happier. . ., February 19, 2011

This review is from: Kuhn Rikon 3043 Duromatic 6.3-Quart (6-Liter) Stockpot Pressure Cooker (Kitchen)
I am unable to find a replacement gasket for my $99 Kuhn Rikon Ecomatic, which I loved dearly, so I bought this one since it was driving me insane to not have it, and I am astounded at how much better it is. It is completely silent, comes to pressure much more quickly, and stays at pressure better and more evenly. I never thought I would spend $200, but I found I can't live without a pressure cooker now that I am used to having one. Hopefully I can find a replacement gasket for the Ecomatic because I would love to have 2 cookers, one for soup and one for rice.

I was initially a little worried because the Miss Vickie site recommends the cooker with one long handle, but I found that it gets in my way, and it's too heavy to lift one handed anyway. Now that I have it, I much prefer the stockpot or 2 short handled version. The cap thingy on the top is a little weird but seems to work fine. I saw some other people say that it broke, but I'm not sure how, because it doesn't seem to me like you should even need to take it off or mess with it unless you are cleaning out the vent, which I don't find needs done too often. Also, the 6 liter size is perfect for me, I cook for just me and my husband, but usually make several days worth of food at once.

Pressure cooking is the best cooking.

I was resistant to pressure cooking but once I realized how much energy all my cooking uses, I decided to give this a try and I now couldn't live without this cooker. It is safe and easy to use and is holding up very well. I bought this several years ago.

Extremely pleased with this cooker. Just the right size for most recipes even though we are just a couple. Works perfectly, silently and easy to clean. Would readily recommend this cooker.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth the price, November 22, 2011

This review is from: Kuhn Rikon 3043 Duromatic 6.3-Quart (6-Liter) Stockpot Pressure Cooker (Kitchen)
We purchased this to replace a decent, less expensive pressure cooker when it started having issues sealing and holding pressure. We had had mixed experiences with the first one and had problems with burning on the bottom, but the convenience of pressure cooking was appealing so we decided to try another one. This pressure cooker has been absolutely wonderful. We have had no problems with things burning, even cooking a lentil and barley veggie stew that ALWAYS burned in the cheaper cooker. I believe the construction of this cooker helps distribute the heat better, and it seems easier to regulate the pressure. My husband loves the quick pressure release, just press the button on the top down and watch the steam come out! Our other one had a quick release too, but this one is more fun to use.

It is perfect for cooking for the two of us and having leftovers for lunch. In addition to the dish above, we have made fantastic beef stews (multiple recipes). Just brown the beef in the pressure cooker, then sweat the veggies, add the beef back in with some potatoes and liquid of your choice and pressurize! The meat is flavorful and you can break it up easily with a fork even using the standard stew beef from the market.

I was hesitent to spend this much on a pressure cooker since we don't use it that much. But it appears to be the model used on some of the shows on the food network with top notch chefs (the style is pretty distinct, so I am pretty sure it is the same), and we wanted a quality product as I am a little nervous about hot things under pressure. After almost a year there are no problems. It seems like it will last for a long time, and I can't wait to try it out on the induction range we are getting this winter.

I would not hesitate to recommend this to anyone looking for a quality pressure cooker. It does have some specific storage recommendations to ensure the gasket remains functional, but as long as you read and follow the easy directions you should have no problems. The recommendations are pretty standard for pressure cookers from what I have seen.
