Looks funny but it's the best I've ever used,

Some people open a lot of cans and have an electric can opener on their countertop or underneath their cabinet. Others like myself need a can opener only on occasion and don't want a tool that takes up more space than other more utilized kitchen tools. I was reluctant to purchase this Kuhn Rikon but since the company manufactures some of my favorite kitchen gadgets and pressure cookers, I gave it a try. The feel in my hand was appealing and I liked the selection of colors. I also found it on sale and I'm a frugal consumer. In the year I've owned this can opener, I've increased the number of cans in my home. I've started purchasing dog food in the can to give my little dog a spoonful with her kibble. I buy huge cans of tomatoes and make my sauce more often. Cans of tuna are opened more frequently, as are legumes.
Once you get the swing of how this operates, it is a cinch. You position the head of the opener at the top of your can with two little arrows at the edge closest to your body. You then turn the handle and the can moves around as it's held by the opener. As soon as you feel a little change in the momentum, your can lid is safely separated from the base of the can. Using the little metal clip on the side, you push a button on the opposing side and grab ahold of the lid, lift, and you then have an opened can, thereby exposing you to whatever is inside the can. It works on varied sizes and shapes of cans without problem and it remains clean. You will not be cut because there is no sharp edge. If you want, you can place the lid back on the can, but I only do that if I'm going to transfer the product into another container for storage. I haven't tried to use this one-handed, but it probably could be done by resting the opener on the can and then turning the handle. Because of the positioning of the button, an adept person likely could use this to lift the lid as well. If I'm in a rush, I sometimes just do that without the Kuhn Rikon anyway since the lid will easily come off. My only criticism of this tool is that it is a little large to fit in my silverware drawer, but then an advantage is that it has yet to be lost.

This opener is easy to use (no strength needed), but even better is the way it opens. It cleanly removes the lid and leaves no sharp edge. You can run a finger right over it and no cuts! The opener never touches the food, so it doesn't accumulate dirt and germs the way many can openers do. I got this as a gift and loved it so much I gave a few as gifts. It works a little differently than other can openers so you will need to read the instructions the first 1-2 times but it really is easy after that.

Tilts Can Openers on Their Side: A Kuhn Rikon Auto Safety Lid Lifter Review,

This review is from: Kuhn Rikon Auto Safety Lid Lifter, Red (Kitchen)
We bought a new house, so I decided we weren't going to pack the old manual can opener. While it had served me well for more years than I want to admit and still performed well, I figured this was a perfect opportunity to find a replacement. I went searching on Amazon and found this one.
This can opener, unlike other manual openers cuts the can on the side instead of from the top. This not only prevents accidental cuts, but allows one to use the top as a lid for cleaning out the can before recycling. Additionally shavings or dirt won't fall into the food. Opening from the side means this opener works a little different from top cutters. The knob is used to lock the opener onto the can's lip. Turn until the slight resistance has stopped indicating a complete revolution, then unlock and use the lid lifter to remove the lid. Even though this opener opens from the top, it is simple to use and safer. Additionally it is sturdy and feels good in the hand. I suspect this replacement will serve me well for more years that I want to admit. If you are in the market for a new manual can opener, this is the one to get. PROS: Available in Red, Blue, Black, and White Simple to use Quality construction Safer than the traditional manual can openers CONS: May lead more people to store food in the can; this is not an advisable practice even with the top as a lid.

Cool Can Opener,

I bought this can opene because I wanted one that cut the can on the side, not the top. This one works like a charm and has a nifty lid grabber to pull the lid off once the cut is made. It's not your regular ol' can opener... so if you like cool gadgets, you'll like this one.

It Works,

This product works as advertised. I'm thrilled with no more ragged and dangerous edges. Some have mentioned a lack of instructions. I've uploaded an image of the back of the mounting card that has very clear instructions. Using the built in gripper to lift the lid off requires a bit of force... don't be shy to pull. The lid does come off and it's a beautiful dull edge that won't cut you. Great concept.

I can remember my mother warning every time I used a can opener as a child to watch out for the cut edge. There is no sharp edge when you use this opener. It is small, nothing to squeeze, fits more easily into the utensil drawer, without looping an arm through another device in the drawer.

Most of us are familiar with the classic can opener that's easy to use but leaves jagged edges and often drops the lid right in to the can. Kuhn Rikon's Auto Safety Lid Lifter not only leaves you with a smooth edge around the lid, but allows you to remove the lid and dispose it without touching the can. Pretty cool. It's comfortable in my hands, looks good out on the counter, and feels solid... I plan on using this one for years to come.

as a safty can opener this works great, only problem i have is that you are not able to drain the can of the liquid with the lid in place, like a can of tuna.for this i still use the old type of opener.

I bought this can opener based on a review in Cooks Illustrated magazine and it works great. It opens cans easily. It does not leave any sharp edges. The handle is comfortable to grip. I think the lid removing mechanism (pincher on the side) is a bit strange and awkward, so I don't use it - but I don't have any problem just manually taking the lid off the can.

Best Can Opener,

Can openers--ahem "lid lifters"--are not something you think about. You have one, you use it, and when it breaks you replace it. However, when my old opener rusted to a halt, I thought I would spend a little time researching. I'm glad I did. This lifter is fun, easy-to-use and extremely efficient. It's almost like magic how it removes the lid. You hold the device on the top of the can, and start turning the knob. It engages the can seamlessly and effortlessly works its way around the rim. When you stop feeling resistance, the can is open, although it doesn't look like it. Using the neat little gripper, you grab the edge of the lid and the whole thing comes off. It's as if it unseals the can instead of cutting through it. No sharp edges and the lid doesn't fall into the can; it rests neatly on top until you remove it. Brilliant!
