This review is from: Kuhn Rikon Duromatic 8-1/2-Quart Stockpot (Kitchen)
I owned a six quart Kuhn Rikon Duromatic for about a decade. It worked great the entire time. But I recently destroyed it by leaving it on the high setting on a electric stove top with no liquid in it. The heat was so intense it delaminated the aluminum wafer on the base. So I just bought the 8.5 quart model. I love being able to cook lots of veggies all at once, so the increased size over my previous one is much appreciated.

The model I had for ten years worked flawlessly. It did require occasional maintenance about every five years when the spring pressure mechanism on the top gets a little sticky. I disassembled the spring mechanism and cleaned the shaft with 4/0 steel wool. A mild kitchen cleanser would have accomplished the same task. It was not difficult to do.

I have no hesitation rating this current model right at the top of the pack. They have made improvements over the one I bought 10 years ago. The industrial design is prettier to look at and the lid can be put on more easily. But the mechanism for controlling pressure appears to be the same, and it is a tried and proved design.

Thanks to this pressure cooker, and Lorna Sass's book Pressure Perfect, the staff at the drive through at McDonalds must be wondering what happened to me and my kids. I can have a great dinner ready in 20 minutes, even if everything's in the freezer. This pot has been a great size for cooking everything, and it still fits in the dishwasher. I wish I'd bought one years ago.

I've only cooked a chuck roast in the pressure cooker and it turned out great. It took only 35 minutes and was as good as one cooked for 3 or 4 hours. Definetly a keeper

4.0 out of 5 stars the wrong and right way to deal with a warranty issue, January 6, 2012

Don't get me wrong I loved this pressure cooker when it worked. After 5 months of heavy use the valves started to leak, so the pressure could not be maintained and one of the handles fell off. Remembering that I had purchased a very expensive, top of the line product; I excitedly checked on my warranty. ONE MONTH! Of course, it is my fault for not noticing when I purchased it, but really ten years on non-replaceable parts is pretty much of a joke. I am about to purchase a smaller pressure cooker and will be more careful this time.

Since then I have returned the cooker to the manufacturer to my satisfaction. I have also since bought two more cookers and the one I use the most has a handle that keeps coming loose. I think there is a problem with the design.

5.0 out of 5 stars The only manufacturer of pressure cookers for me!, September 1, 2011

I have owned the Kuhn Rikon 5 Quart Pressure Braiser for several years and have been perfectly delighted with it. I used it for many wonderful things, especially soups and stocks. It eventually became tedious to make stock in a 5 Quart capacity in such a wide and shallow pot, so I decided to purchase the Kuhn Rikon Duromatic 8-1/2-Quart Stockpot as well.

It is as advertised with 18/10 stainless steel, but it is definitely lighter than the 5 Quart Pressure Braiser. I suppose the shape and narrow mouth of this pot simply requires less steel support than the 5 Quart Braiser. The rubber o-ring is also lighter and less bulky. These are not criticisms, simply observations that I found curious.

Overall, it is expertly made, easy to maintain, a snap to clean in the dishwasher, a shape that is easy to store, and works flawlessly every time. Excellent product.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great pressure cooker, except for the price, March 12, 2011

The Kuhn pressure cooker is definitely a top quality product, except for the steep price. The unit is quiet, without the hissing sound and it does a great job in cooking tough meats. The other issue that might be a disadvantage for some is that not all the parts are dish washer safe.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice Pressure Cooker!!, September 8, 2011

So far I've had no problems with this cooker. It works great (I've used it for mostly beans). The lid stays clean internally... really neat because even my pots on the stove lids don't stay clean... especially with beans!!

Have not had to replace the gasket yet... No idea how long it will last

I have used this cooker twice since I bought it. I've used other cookers over the years, but this is state of the art. Well constructed and good looking.
