5.0 out of 5 stars Have them always for backup, December 24, 2004

This review is from: Kuhn Rikon Duromatic 22-Centimeter Replacement Gasket (Kitchen)
This 22cm gasket is needed for Kuhn Rikon's 3342 model pressure cooker which amazon also sells a 6-piece set with pressure pan with glass lid.

I think anyone which a pressure cooker need to have atleast one gasket as backup as you never know when some guest might put your gasket in the bottom shelf of dishwasher and mess it up because of excessive heat there.

We had a similar bad experience and amazon didn't have any in stock then. Ever since, we make sure to have one back up gasket!

5.0 out of 5 stars These gaskets last a long time, October 10, 2009
I've had these gaskets last as long as 3 years with at least weekly use, and often several times per week. I do wash them carefully and coat them with a little olive oil before putting them away but find them very durable. You can tell when you need to replace one because the steam starts to leak out when you're trying to build up pressure and no matter how you turn it or press it inside the cover, it just won't hold a good seal anymore. I always keep one on hand as a backup since I use my pressure cookers often. They're kind of expensive, but when you figure how long they last and especially how much energy you save using a Kuhn Rikon pressure cooker, it's pretty nominal.

This review is from: Kuhn Rikon Duromatic 22-Centimeter Replacement Gasket (Kitchen)
I purchased this as a back up when I got my new Kuhn Rikon pressure cooker. I have a 14 year old K.R. and I am still using the same gasket it came with, and it looks like new. I have been told that the gaskets should be changed every year or so, but my old one still works fine - no leaks, cracks etc...

I wash the gasket after every use and make sure it is dry before putting in back in the lid. I called the manufacturer and asked if it was necessary to oil it after every washing and they said no, as it is silicone, not rubber.

4.0 out of 5 stars silicone rubber is the solution, November 21, 2010

I have 2 of the Kuhn Rikon saute pan-pressure cookers. (Bought them at a cook store's going-out-of-business sale). I also have a larger KR pressure cooker bought later. The saute cookers came with the older black ?neoprene gaskets, while the large cooker came with the new hi temp silicone rubber gaskets.

I use the smaller cookers several times a week. The black gaskets wore out in about two years. As an experiment, I replaced one with the black #1542 gasket and one with the newer blue silicone rubber #1502 gasket. The black gasket wore out again in about 2 years of frequent but not daily use, while the silicone rubber one is still going strong. I have cleaned them both carefully, and stored them out of the lids. I have never used oil on them. The black ?neoprene seems to have become somewhat stiffer over time (?heat embrittlement), which perhaps lead to its 'wearing out' and failure to seal properly in use. It shows no signs of physical wear.

I don't know why Kuhn Rikon bother selling the old style gasket. I can't think of any reason to use it. The new one fits my 24cm saute-cooker lid (although it needs a bit more manipulation since it is more flexible) and should last a much longer time.

BTW -- I once replaced the natural rubber gasket in a Bialetti stove top espresso maker with a "high temperature food service grade silicone rubber" gasket (made for me at a marine gasket shop in Seattle) and that completely solved the 'burned gasket' problem for the espresso maker, even when foolishly left to overheat until boiled empty.

So if you don't want to spend more on gaskets than you have invested in the cookers, hi temp silicone rubber rules!
