I swear there were reviews on this when I first put it on my wishlist.

This is a handy, light, fairly compact shredder that seems to be pretty sturdy for its price range and isn't too hard to clean. It shreds finer than a real julienne (which is supposed to be an eighth of an inch square), almost more of a grate, although where grating gives pretty flat pieces the shreds this cutter makes are almost square in cross-section. Maybe a mini-julienne?

I used it to make hash browns and it was easy to use, although the enclosed hand guard doesn't work well with large chunks of vegetable -- it's basically a knob for gripping mounted in a flat surface, so although it has spikes to help grip a vegetable it kept slipping off the rounded surface of the potato. I found it easier to use my bare hand until the potato was small enough to put my fingers within risk of the blades, and then switch to the hand guard.

It comes with a blade cover that snaps onto the cutting surface and doesn't add any real bulk to its profile for storage.

I will keep and use it, but in a truly crowded or minimalist kitchen you probably don't need both this cutter and a grater. If you need true julienne, another cutter would be better.

EDIT: I'm finding this to be my favorite shredder for making has browns and latkes. Maybe because the shreds it produces are less flat than the shreds made by a traditional grater? I enjoy the slightly more dimensional little "straws".

This is definitely a 'Medium Level' proficiency device in the kitchen. I've nicked my hands and fingers a few times on this, so this definitely deserves respect! The force and direction of use is the exact combination for maximum carnage, so be careful! The safety guide is a joke. I think it makes it more dangerous. You can't get a good grip on the veggie with it, so you run the risk of slipping.

That's not why it gets 4 instead of 5 stars though. That was just a bit of a warning to respect this little gadget. Why 4 stars? Because the plastic is a slightly flimsy and shows visible cracks in the middle on both sides, which makes me nervous about continuously adding pressure to it. Mind you, it hasn't snapped in half yet, but it's definitely headed that way.

If you can be careful, this makes beautiful, uniformly cut juilienned veggies, and can do it faster than any other method....with practice, patience, and respect.

My family makes special Japanese food for New Year's celebration. One dish is make from gobo (burdock root). It's very woody and difficult to julienne. Over the years I have tried many devices to shred this root. I even tried the Cuisinart and it built up and jammed the blade and actually made the plastic shaft separate from the blade, this happened so fast I didn't realize what happened until it was too late. Recently, I found a shredder made by Borner and it is okay but stuff gets stuck in the metal 'tubes'. I saw this and it looked like the loops were a little larger. That little difference is amazing. I can just keep shredding. It also works great on carrots. I am not fond of carrots but it takes such little effort to add a little to a salad. That is all I have tried so far. For me, this one thing is great and I LOVE it.

This review may not be that useful for many but it is great for many other root vegetables, I'm sure. It may not technically be a julienne but is is very nice.
I have used a Benriner slicer since childhood so I don't find a need for the safety devices and in fact, it would hinder its use. Just angle the vegetable at 45 degrees and shred to an inch of the end.

I was thrilled when I first bought this, and I use it every day for salads. It's sharp, easy to use, and is pretty easily cleaned under running water. I use it mostly for beets and carrots. It cuts strips much nicer in texture than grating does, but they're a little thin. Julienne strips are supposed to be 1/8"x1/8"x3". These are about half that thick. Beware of getting your fingers anywhere near the blades, I got painful little cuts several times until I learned my lesson and started using the hand guard. It's held up to daily use for several months, but I think the full price is a bit high considering its construction. It doesn't seem like it's going to last for years, but maybe that's not fair to say since it's been fine so far. Look for it on sale or at an outlet store.

I have been through what feels like a zillion mandolin slicers which have all ended up being shipped off to goodwill's but not this one. The slicer is fast and efficient, however I don't feel the hand guard is particularly good. The thing you're slicing, especially hard veg like carrots end up sliding off it and you end up needing to fix it back into place a lot. Having said that it does do a good job when you get into the swing of it and I have found it to be superior to other mandolins which I have tried in the past.

I used this mandolin to create this recipe on my food blog: [...]

These little gadgets are brilliant, I have two slicers, the fine and the regular, and the julienne type. They take up little space, they stay sharp for years and they work very well. I use the julienne for carrots, potatoes, daikon, apple, cucumber, it works well on pretty well everything I've tried it on. The same goes for the slicers which also work well on onions. I've given them as gifts and they are always well received. This is one kitchen gadget that won't sit unused in the drawer.
