4.0 out of 5 stars Works great - two issues to keep in mind
This opener works great, even for my mother who has some hand strength issues. If you buy cans of tuna, salmon, chicken, etc. and press the liquid out with the lid, this won't work as the lid doesn't fit in the can as with a traditional opener. (Keep the old one on hand for these items.) Also, product canned in liquid is usualy quite full and spills easily when removing...

I like using this type of opener rather than electrics that sometimes drop the lid into the can contents. It works very well most of the time, but I have encountered a few cans that it just doesn't cut, so I have to revert to the old electric opener. It's better than most others out there, but not perfect.

5.0 out of 5 stars Throw out that traditional can opener and get a safe edge opener, January 27, 2007
By
This review is from: Kuhn Rikon Auto Safety Lid Lifter, Black (Kitchen)
This is a wonderful high quality safe edge can opener. The plastic handle feels high quality and the mechanism is all metal, it feels like there is a bearing for the spindle that rests against the can.

The open is very easy to use, you set it up against the can and start turning the handle. It will automatically set the cutter, and you just turn until you get all the way around the can, turn it half a turn backwards and the opener pops off. Then you pull the lid off the can, and it if is tight, the opener has a built in clamp to help remove the lid.

The safe edge openers are so much better, they don't require you to fish for lids and the edges are not nearly as sharp so you are much less likely to cut yourself. They also engage the lid better so the don't slip like traditional can openers can. This is one of the higher quality safe edge can openers I have seen, but any should be adequate.

1.0 out of 5 stars Looks nice, not durable, July 20, 2010

Worked great for a short while (a few months), now the internal mechanism is stripped and it doesn't work any more. To the trash it went.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tilts Can Openers on Their Side: A Kuhn Rikon Auto Safety Lid Lifter Review, July 31, 2009
This review is from: Kuhn Rikon Auto Safety Lid Lifter, Black (Kitchen)
We bought a new house, so I decided we weren't going to pack the old manual can opener. While it had served me well for more years than I want to admit and still performed well, I figured this was a perfect opportunity to find a replacement. I went searching on Amazon and found this one.

This can opener, unlike other manual openers cuts the can on the side instead of from the top. This not only prevents accidental cuts, but allows one to use the top as a lid for cleaning out the can before recycling. Additionally shavings or dirt won't fall into the food.

Opening from the side means this opener works a little different from top cutters. The knob is used to lock the opener onto the can's lip. Turn until the slight resistance has stopped indicating a complete revolution, then unlock and use the lid lifter to remove the lid.

Even though this opener opens from the top, it is simple to use and safer. Additionally it is sturdy and feels good in the hand. I suspect this replacement will serve me well for more years that I want to admit. If you are in the market for a new manual can opener, this is the one to get.

PROS:
Available in Red, Blue, Black, and White
Simple to use
Quality construction
Safer than the traditional manual can openers

CONS:
May lead more people to store food in the can; this is not an advisable practice even with the top as a lid.

3.0 out of 5 stars Suffers the same fate as the others, October 24, 2011

All the cool design and convenience features don't make up for the one common shortcoming that can openers have. The cutting wheel. We have had Pampered Chef, Zyliss and some others, and they all fail to cut completely through after a couple of years. This opener is super easy to use due to the self clamping mechanism and built in pliers. It was easier to get started than the Zyliss we had, but the cutter on both failed too soon, and we don't open that many cans. Too bad someone can't put the quality where it's most needed.

Bought this to replace a different brand of can opener that stopped working after not too much use. This was highly recommended by the Cooks Illustrated web site. Wanted a can opener that would not produce a jagged edge. This item is easy to use and works well. Extremely easy to attach to a can and easy (once you follow the instructions) to remove from the can. My wife, a confirmed old type can opener afficionado loves this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clean and easy, March 6, 2008

Most of us are familiar with the classic can opener that's easy to use but leaves jagged edges and often drops the lid right in to the can. Kuhn Rikon's Auto Safety Lid Lifter not only leaves you with a smooth edge around the lid, but allows you to remove the lid and dispose it without thouching the can. Pretty cool. It's comfortable in my hands, looks good out on the counter, and feels solid... I plan on using this one for years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars EVEN GREAT FOR LEFTIES, April 4, 2010
This review is from: Kuhn Rikon Auto Safety Lid Lifter, Black (Kitchen)
I have struggled over the years with conventional can openers (both top openers and safety side openers), but they are all designed for right-handed use!! I finally opted for the Kuhn Rikon and, voila!!!; I just zip through the cans with ease and comfort with my left hand. The instructions sound a bit confusing but as long as you line up the handle as discribed, the opener engages the can easily and the task is done. Be advised, however, that you must complete the circle as stated in the instructions. A nice touch is that you can easily feel the completion of the circle. Great tool and engineered well. N.B. I bought the model with the bottle-opener at the other end and it is a convenient addition. Kuhn Rikon Auto Safety Master Opener, Blue

Bought this for my wife; she has arthritis.
She loves it. Not only is it easy to turn, it is just the right size and shape to prevent hand pain.
I've got huge hands, and have no trouble with it.
It's really neat too that it leaves smooth edges; we can give the empty cans to our spoiled cats without
fear of them cutting themselves on the rims.
We've never seen any metal slivers like other reviewers claim; we always stop after one complete turn
around the rim.

4 stars out of 5 because it won't open all cans; some cans with a pull-ring it doesn't open well.
No biggie; it's definitely worth the price for a very well made product.
