5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference for students from white to blue belt, January 7, 2000
This review is from: Kuk Sool Won Textbook (Hardcover)
Being a Kuk Sool practitioner, I can vouch for the importance of this book. It's excellent for reference, although I would not recommend trying to learn from it. It contains techniques and forms required at White, Yellow and Blue belt levels. Higher level belt information (in the latter textbooks) can only be bought once that level is achieved through a school. Also contained is information on etiquette, Kuk Sool history, Ki exercises, conditioning exercises, breakfalls, striking methods, the list goes on...

A must buy for any serious Kuk Sool practitioner.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's a must have book, for your library, May 1, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Kuk Sool Won Textbook (Hardcover)
If you are studying the art of Kuk Sool this is an ideal book to have. You can not learn the various techniques by book alone because alot depends on um and yang and angles and such. I have both books by Kuk Sa Nim and Dr He Young Kimm. It's great for review and for building your library. Thanks and keep practicing Kuk Sool Won! 5.0 out of 5 stars Kuk Sool Guide, December 21, 1999
By
This review is from: Kuk Sool Won Textbook (Hardcover)
Throughout my training in Kuk Sool, i have used this book exensively and many times it has proven very useful. I recommend any practitioner of Kuk Sool to buy this book. People who do not train in Kuk Sool will not find this book of much help, but those of you who are thinking of joining can use this book as a reference of things to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars In Hyuk Suh wrote an excellent resource, June 8, 2001

This review is from: Kuk Sool Won Textbook (Hardcover)
It is a given that one can not truly learn a martial art from a book, and it is the same with this book, that you can not learn Kuk Sool Won from it. That does not mean that this is not a valuable resource.

This book makes an excellent study aide that will greatly advance your own learning when taking the art and if, for some reason, you are forced to not be able to take classes (due to location or finances) this book can help you retain what you had previously learned.

It's scope is, by necessity, limited. It only covers up to Red Belt, and does not go farther. For the more advanced techniques, one must get the second volume, that can only be purchased through the classes themselves.

As is, this book combined with my personal practices, are the only things keeping my skills from deteriorating while I am between instructors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kuk Sool Won book covers everything upto Black Belt!, August 27, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Kuk Sool Won Textbook (Hardcover)
There are very few books on the art of Kuk Sool Won. In English there are only two books. The one written by Dr. He-Young Kimm and this one by Grandmaster In-Hyuk Suh. I have both of them. The Kuk Sool Won Textbook is complete and thorough in its treatment of Kuk Sool Won the art.

It covers the history, philosophy, cultural, and techniques of Kuk Sool Won. In the techniques it covers everything of Kuk Sool Won: kicks, punches, joint-locks, throws, pressure points, falls, self-defense techniques, theory, etc...

Anyone taking Kuk Sool Won or any of the related arts should purchase it. Why? There are too many techniques to Kuk Sool Won. This book will help you to remember the whole of Kuk Sool Won. Of course this cannot replace the personal instruction. But it is valuable for those practicing the art. The book is through. I think you will find it satisfactory to your search.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good book, November 2, 2005

This book has all you need to refreash your memory from White to Blue belt. The photos in this book leave out some important details, so having proper instruction is key to realy undertsanding this form of martial art. Not to mention , if you join a local school, you get all the books at the original cost.
The book includes History of KSW as well as the history of Korea and how martial arts started in Korea. The life of Kuk Sa Nim and how he transformed several techniques and forms into one art is great. He describes his history there as well.
If you are not a KSW student some of the material in this book will be vague. Price ranging between 70 to 100 dollars will be common.
Please read all the warnings and take care not to hurt your partner.

4.0 out of 5 stars good resource but best for review, June 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Kuk Sool Won Textbook (Hardcover)
I am a White belt (soon testing for my yellow) in Kuk Sool Won and this book has helped me and my family a lot. However, the only things that are easy to learn from this book are the forms, punching and kicking. For everything else, I had to have my Kyo Sa Nim (Eric of Alameda, Califorina) show me first because it doesn't explain the rest very well and you have to have done it first and have an idea on how to do it. But it is a good book for me because it helps me practice. It also gives you an extensive history of the Korean martial Art and teaches you an awful lot of Korean language (mainly counting, body parts, body functions, etc.) I recomend it to White-Blue belts who have been in Kuk Sool for over two weeks.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kuk Sool Won Textbook good for reference, April 14, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Kuk Sool Won Textbook (Hardcover)
The Kuk Sool Won Textbook Vol 1 is an accurate depiction of the techniques of the Kuk Sool curriculum. I would caution readers that they cannot adequately learn the techniques merely from the book. Another reviewer said the book was "through" (I think he meant "thorough"), and it is indeed that. However, nothing replaces hard work in a martial arts school. Also, the reader will be lulled into complacency and forget her techniques, always telling herself that "I have the book in my closet, so I don't have to review my techniques." Bottom line: the textbook is good for review, but do not rely on it for more than that.
