Disappointing - Clichés Get in the Way,
This review is from: Kuliano (Paperback)
DISCLAIMER - This review is based upon reading the sample Kindle version."Kuliano" offers an intriguing premise: a historical novel told from the perspective of a native Hawaiian during the period of US annexation. Unfortunately, the potential is unfulfilled. Each of the characters introduced is a two-dimensional caricature, filling a well-established role in a penny melodrama. The evil and grasping uncle, the self-centered and spineless nephew, and the noble native boy (who seemingly can only speak and think in pidgin) all point to a tired and predictable narrative, one I could not bring myself to purchase. I have no reason to doubt the author's academic qualifications to write on this topic, but she might find greater storytelling success if she takes the time to develop her characters beyond clichéd stereotypes. |
