A simple but effective series,
By Fitz23 "jfitzsi421" (Brooklyn, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Kundalini Yoga : A Complete Course for Beginners Vol. 1 (DVD)
This DVD, which is the first of a six DVD set, was originally produced as a part of a class at the University of Alaska in Kundalini Yoga. Each DVD contains two of the classes and each class takes the methods from the previous session and builds upon them. This set is not a flashy product by any stretch of the imagination but what it is is a solid introduction to the bedrock methods of Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajin and the 3HO Foundation.
If what you are looking for is bells and whistles, this is definately not the yoga series for you. If what you are looking for is sexy people doing a hard streching workout on a beach, try any of Rodney Yee's excellent releases. If what you are looking for is a good progressive introduction to Kundalini Yoga with an emphasis upon both tradition, nervous system and back health this _is_ the series for you.

Want to raise your Kundalini?
These videos led me into this experience after the first and third episodes. After the first episode of Volume 1, I felt a warming energy that really energized me... It was not a huge rush, but noticeable. After the third episode I had to spend half a night breathing the energy up my spine and away from my second chakra because I coudn't sleep from all the stimulation I was experiencing! Wow! After about two days the energy dissipated, which was a relief, in that I can have some degree of control by using the dvd's when I'm ready for more! This was the stuff I had read and dreamt about during my twenties and thirties and never experienced until last month at 43+. Thank God that 10+ years ago I had lived at Ananda, and learned the principles of Kriya and Kundalini Yoga as I finally found the most curiously simple, yet effective, practice to draw forth my kundalini energy. This is hard core energy stuff; not about pretty asanas, but about the release and activation of the "mighty serpent" the kundalini energy. Best part of all, my local library has all six DVD's. Every library should! I have 20+ Gaiam yoga videos with all my favorite teachers: Rodney Yee, Suzanne Deason, Patricia Walden. I've used these videos in my home for several years but not one of them, including Gurmukh's Kundalini Yoga video, activated my kundalini energy until I started to use Nirvair Singh Khalsa's. I'm still in wonder trying to figure out why it works! Is it because we hold the poses for several minutes and do so much breathing? These were very easy poses; most of them were from a sitting position. I actually followed along on episode 1 the day after sinus surgery. Thank you Nirval Singh Khalsa!

Fantastic, Entertaining, Easy, but Effective,
By A Customer
This review is from: Kundalini Yoga : A Complete Course for Beginners Vol. 1 (DVD)
This course is unlike any Rodney Yea/Living Artist production and in all the right ways. Unlike many other Yoga workouts, this series (12 in all) is approached from an energetic and spiritual perspective. It's extremely easy to follow yet productive and energizing. Even advanced Yoga practitioners will appreciate the breathing techniques and psychological lessons to be learned. Hardly a "power yoga" workout, this is Yoga as it was intended from the start. Enjoyed every minute.

The real thing,

I have purchased the whole series - and have done the first 4 sessions ( out of 12 ). I would recommend that the reader if possible should do the same, as I have encountered a lot of different techniques so far in the 4 sessions , and to some degree each session builds on the previous ones.
All I can say to describe it is that each session has made me feel even more wonderful than the last. After the Sat Kriya I felt as though I was floating, and the pranayama techniques are very effective at making you both alert and relaxed in a very short time. The instructor is brilliant, and as regards learning from a DVD rather than a class - all the questions I have wanted to ask so far, have been answered by the instruction ( although in some cases this is on a later DVD ).

Exercise and refocus gently, without pain,

This review is from: Kundalini Yoga : A Complete Course for Beginners Vol. 1 (DVD)
I knew I wanted a DVD on yoga and I also knew I wanted one that was not based on glitz and glamour but based on true yoga done slowly with mediation, stretching, mantras, and explanation on how doing each movement effected a particular part of your body for the long term good of the whole of me. This is exactly what this DVD is. I took my time and researched every book and DVD you have listed. I have been using both the DVD vol. 1 and the book of the same name, which goes into greater detail and is an over view of the whole series, which is also excellent. I am ready to order the next DVD vol. 2 in the series. I have been telling other people about the book and the DVD, where I found it, and they are interested as well. When it comes to exercise, glitz and glamour don't turn me on or inspire me. I want to relax, slow down and not be part of the masses. I can get that on the fitness channel. I am not a 20something, but a more mature adult, who needs simply to slow down and get my body stretched and back into shape gently, while I slow down my mind and relax internally. If you are wanting to find something to help you mentally slow down, so you can refocus your mind and your body, and you aren't interested in the glitz and glamour of the fancy beach scene, etc, then this is the DVD series for you. You go at your pace and learn to get in touch with your body, and your mind, gently, without pain.

Excellent Introduction to Kundalini Yoga As Taught By Yogi Bhajan,

I would much rather learn Kundalini Yoga in person but since there are no teachers where I live this DVD set is the next best thing. I first heard about Kundalini Yoga from a great book compiled by Tami Simon of Sounds True titled Kundalini Rising: Exploring the Energy of Awakening. After reading about Kundalini Yoga I felt that maybe this was the spiritual practice I had been searching for.
I purchased the complete DVD set from the Kundalini Research Institute for $108 + s&h. I just pulled up Nirvair Singh Khalsa's (the teacher in the video) website and he is selling the DVD set on his site for a special sale price of $99 with a bonus DVD included. I think this is the cheapest deal but I'm not sure how long the sale will last. Make sure you shop around and find the best deal because the price and bonuses vary from site to site. I've taken Kripalu Yoga classes before, which also focus on the energetic aspects of yoga, so I do know how it feels when the prana starts moving around. The first class was a good intro and very relaxing, but it was the second class that really got the energy moving. I woke up feeling tired and kind of low so I decided to do the second class to see if it could pick me up. I'm writing this just after finishing the second class and I feel great! Relaxed yet energized at the same time. I was so impressed with the second class that I had to write this review right away. There are 12 classes total and I'm excited to see how the other 10 classes are. I will update this post once I complete the 12 classes and have practiced them for awhile. Update 17 Mar 2011: I have take Kundalini Yoga classes locally and have also used Gurmukh and Maya Fiennes Kundalini Yoga DVD's and I must say that I really love this DVD set. There is something about the way Nirvair Singh Khalsa teaches that makes his DVD's my favorites. Excellent course and highly recommended.

This was not my first purchase of a kundalini yoga dvd. For anyone that believes all yoga styles are hard, or twisting yourself up like a pretzel... they would be very wrong since there are many forms for different objectives. Kundalini yoga is a very good practice for those who suffer mild cervical and spinal problems, and for those who want to limber up the back, neck, and other parts of their body slowly, with minimum stress on the joints. I would recommend this to others who want to feel better mentally and physically.

I bought this same set of two yoga classes at the University of Alaska previously on VHS,
and found them extremely helpful for someone not entirely flexible. Now that they are on DVD, I can play either class without rewinding etc.

This is a very low quality production taken from a tv show in Alaska used by community college for credit. There is way too much talking to watch repeatedly. They advertise a 12 class program: note, you only get the first 2 in this dvd and they are virtually the same. There was no thought to edit this for a dvd. There was thought, however, to simply market this lame tv class into easy profit through this dvd. It's sad when something as ideal and spiritual as yoga is met with the cheapest, most obvious profit motive. Any of the free yoga/stretching classes currenly on public tv in your area will no doubt be better in quality than this outdated talkfest.
