Product Description

Kurgo's Enhanced Strength Tru-Fit Smart Harness has all the features of our standard harness, with the added benefit of Kurgo's innovative Nesting Buckles. The all-steel Nesting Buckle system is based on the time-tested harnesses of rock climbers and linesmen. The Nesting Buckles take a minute to learn, but are very easy to use. If you make frequent trips in the car with your dog and are looking for a crash-tested harness for him, this is the harness to get. The harness is quick and easy to put on; simply slip it over your dog's head and then clip it around the midsection. The five different adjustments provide nearly a custom fit and the chest pad makes sure that even if Fido misbehaves on the walk or in the car he can be controlled. Available in black or red.

Kurgo 3055 Series Tru-Fit Enhanced Strength Harness

Keep your dog restrained and safe in the car

This crash-tested dog car harness keeps you and your pup safe while driving. It has been designed as a dog safety harness, not a converted walking harness. The all-steel Nesting Buckle System is based on the engineering for harnesses used by rock climbers and linemen ensuring strength and safety.

With five adjustment points, it’s easy to get a near custom fit for any dog, regardless of size and proportions. The chest pad reduces stress on the trachea and sternum while dispersing kinetic energy across the chest of the dog.

Because it’s designed with comfort in mind, our Enhanced Strength Tru-Fit Harness can also be used as a walking or everyday harness. The D-ring on the front chest plate makes it an effective no-pull harness.

Dogs can be buckled in with your car seat belt running through the harness directly or use the included 10-inch dog seat belt tether to provide a bit more range of movement.

  • Medium size fits dogs weighing 25 to 50 pounds with 16- to 25-inch neck, 18- to 28-inch chest.
  • Crash-tested dog car harness protects dogs, drivers, and passengers on the road.
  • Also a walking harness with no-pull halt ring.
  • Broad, padded chest plate for extra protection and comfort.
  • Use with included seat belt tether or any Kurgo vehicle restraint system (sold separately).

I did a lot of research on dog seatbelts before I went with Kurgo. These guys are the best for the most affordable cost and I am really pleased with their product!

First and foremost they are one of the few on the market that are actually crash tested! The quality is very apparent in the stitching and the steal buckles. I thought the nested buckles would be confusing but they are super easy to use and I actually like them better than the clipping ones because they don't get caught in my dogs hair or risk pinching his skin if I clip it wrong.

Second, it fits great. I was worried because my dog was smack in the middle of an extra small and a small and I thought the fit wouldn't work. But I went with the small because I know it's easier to make it smaller, but you can never make it bigger and it fits like a glove!

Third, you don't have to bend your dogs leg to step them into the harness. Just slide the neck loop over the head and the back end fastens on both sides so you don't have to put a leg through like you do with some harnesses.

Forth, I love the front ring for walking! Our dog is still undergoing training stop pulling on walks, so we only use front attaching harnesses for walking. With our old seatbelt we had to switch harnesses every time we got in and out of the car. The front ring gives us an easy way to walk him to and from the car. No harness switch necessary! We've even started using it in place of our regular walking harness and we like it better because it doesn't slide around as much.

Finally, the customer service is spectacular! I ordered this direct from their site and I noticed that after a couple days, my order seemed to be stuck. I sent just one email to their support address and someone got back to me that same day!

I'd like to start by saying that the whole harness is very well built and would work well in any capacity as a dog harness. The seat-belt tether is also well built and strong. The design flaw that I am concerned occurs went the two are used together, following the instructions. Basically, if the dog does a circle be fore it sits (like dogs instinctually do), it causes the tether to become twisted up. Once the dog repeats this a few times, the tether becomes more twisted. Because of the shape and design of the carabiner (clip) used on the tether and the shape of the latching point on the back of the harness, the harness hardware puts pressure on the spring loaded gate (moving part of the carabiner) and unlatches the dog from the tether. This doesn't just happen occasionally, it happens consistently and frequently. I contacted Kurgo about this problem ( see below), and their solutions were:

1) Teach your dog not to be so dog like and not move at all while in the car.
--Dogs move. Dog sit, stand, and spin. If the product is designed for a dog, they should take this behavior into account.
2) Buy their re-designed tether which swivels and corrects for this when it comes out.
--Basically, they know that there is a design flaw but won't do anything for people who purchased their current product. Poor customer service response.

Below is my correspondence with Kurgo.

My messsage to Kurgo:
I've been meaning to write for a few weeks and have now finally found the time. I've got a 40lb 4yo border collie named Layla. She is exuberant and loves to ride in the car.

I admit that I don't own this harness and I hate when people review products that they don't own, but I think when it comes to the safety of our pets and misleading information, some allowances must be made. The product description states that this harness has been crash tested. At face value, that seems really great and had I not done any research, I would've jumped on this, especially at this price. But what the description doesn't mention is that two out of the three sizes crash tested were deemed catastrophic failures and the third was not optimal either. I can't post links, but do a search for "cps crash test results" and you can see for yourself. Here's a quote from the CPS website:

"Exhibited tearing of neck strap and hardware deformation. Allowed dog to launch risking secondary impact. Did not control rotation of dog. Head Excursion Measurement (FMVSS 213) was exceeded for medium size. Failure of size small and large met CPS Catastrophic Failure Definition. Manufacturer attended testing and approved setup of Medium and Large sizes. Due to harness sizing differences CPS created a 25 lb. test with a smaller profile and testing was completed at a later date."

I only wish Amazon would change their product description.

This harness is great and makes it easy to control him when he sees a bird or squirrel on his walk. He does not try and bite or take it off so it must be comfortable for him. I have been using the car harness and it keeps him from jumping around in the car, with the harness he just sits there staring out the window.
