This first volume of television adaptations of Kurt Vonnegut's renowned short stories goes far in proving how a fertile imagination and decent acting can make a less-than-grand production budget seem beside the point.

"All the King's Horses" is a grim morality play featuring gritty performances by immediately recognizable character actors Len Cariou (Murder, She Wrote, The Practice), Don S. Davis (Twin Peaks, The X-Files), and Miguel Fernandes (David Cronenberg's Rabid). A Latin American warlord forces a gung-ho American ambassador to play out a bitter cold war endgame on a giant chessboard in which each piece represents a human life--including those of his wife and son.

"The Euphio Question" takes a dystopian look at humanity's drive for intoxication. An astronomer discovers an anomalous signal in deep space. When transmitted over television, it creates an instantaneous and overwhelming feeling of euphoria in all viewers. NYPD Blue's Gordon Klapp is riveting as the sociologist determined to stop the menace before it hits pay-per-view, and destroys the world.

"Next Door," a mostly clever yarn about a young boy's first night without a babysitter, is presented as a 1950s-era period piece--celebrating the birth of rock & roll as well as the adventure of having the apartment all to yourself, no matter how thin the walls are. In this story that lies somewhere between Rear Window and Home Alone, the young, resourceful hero has to prevent a murder (and save his own life) with no tool besides the telephone and a radio call-in request show. --Grant Balfour
