A detailed examination of Weill's life and music in Europe, which strives to see Weill "within the cultural environment of the Weimar Republic." Based in part on the author's examinations of manuscripts in the Weill estate, the book argues that Weill is much more than the "musical amanuensis of Brecht" and much more than a "Broadway tunesmith." The book notes that Weill was an established musical force in Europe before his association with Brecht in 1927. It places particular emphasis on works that were not necessarily as dependent on jazz and popular music as is popularly believed -- his Orpheus, Mahagonny, and Der Zar Lasst sich Photographieren."
