PACKA50 Review January 19, 2011
By Greg
I think the KA50 does a great job at what its designed to do. Since I live in Arizona, it is very dry here. I end up using it all year round. In the summer its used to cool the house down and the winter to add humidity to the air since its on the extreme side of dry. When the manufacture states 350 sq ft, they mean it.

Since it does hold a lot of water it can be a pain to fill so I use a hose from my laundry sink. If you don't have one you can use a fish water siphon in reverse direction. There is a meter that tells you how much water is in the unit (Min - Max). It's just a float connected to a piece of plastic pushing the meter up. FYI if the unit is empty or very low, the float can tend to get stuck and end up overfilling the unit because it will still say Min when its full. A simple tap on the machine looses the float and you are good to go. Something to keep in mind but wouldn't deter me from buying.

The unit has 5 casters on it and move with little effort on tile or carpet. (no complaints here)

Sleep mode: I don't see myself using this all that much. All it does is cycle through low, medium, and high fan rates and can get a little annoying with the varying noise levels since there is a drastic sound difference between low and high.

Air direction is easy to control. There is a button that allows the system to pivot left to right or stationary. The vertical control is adjusted by manually moving the vertical fins up and down in pre set positions that they snap into. (no complaints here)

Size: Large. Upon ownership I was wowed by its size. I know dimensions are posted but when you look at it in a store vs the room its going in, it changes perspective greatly. Not something that would deter me from buying, just something to keep in mind. Measure for where its going before purchasing.

It has a removable filter on the back. Basic design. Snap off, clean, snap back on. (no complaints here)

Timer: again, basic. You have an option for 1 through 8 hours incrementing 1 hour at a time.

The unit can be used for cooling (with water pump on) or just as a fan (you guessed it, water pump off).

Has a remote and a cradle to hold it when not in use. (reduces the change of remote getting lost)

It has an extremely powerful fan and has a knob that you can adjust to control how much humidity to add to the air. My only complaint is that it is a little on the loud side.

All in all it's a great machine and does what's advertised. If you are using it in the same room you are sleeping in, you might want to use ear plugs, lol. As stated earlier it's not exactly the quietest piece of equipment in the house. For best use I would probably use it while you are at work or have the machine in a different room blocking some of the noise. Watching TV with this unit next to you isn't exactly an easy task. It is not meant for smaller rooms as the output of this machine is large. Very high output levels. It's more for a living area than a single room or a whole apartment. FYI, if you have high humidity levels in your area, any evaporative cooler will be useless. They are meant for dry climates.

I compared air conditioners vs air coolers for days before finally deciding upon the KuulAire PACKA50. Based on the features, cost and reviews, the KuulAire PACKA50 seemed to be the best choice. Honestly, a true air conditioner would provide a sure solution to a heat problem but in addition to costing around 50% more than air coolers, with true air conditioners, you must run an exhaust duct from the portable unit to the outside. The only option for doing that in the living room area of my home would require spending an additional $150 plus for a 'pet door' attachment to the sliding glass door.
The KuulAire PACKA50 arrived earlier than the estimated delivery date. Simply take it out of the box, add water and plug it in. The unit has a pretty strong fan and seemed to work well. Within a couple of days however, I knew that it would not be adequate for the problem I was trying to solve. I purchased the KuulAire PACKA50 to be used inside my indoor grow tent. The grow tent was running at a very consistent 90 degrees and that meant my home was also 90 degrees whenever the tent lights were on. The KuulAire PACKA50 did reduce the temp by about 10 degrees but to do this it pretty much doubled the humidity in my home. This certainly was not the answer I was looking for. In my opinion, the KuulAire PACKA50 is a very good devise that does as it claims, but I don't think it will work for someone who wants to greatly reduce the temperature of their high temp grow lights. Unfortunately, I had to return the unit. Now I'll have to spend twice as much to install a real air conditioner and live with 10 feet of air duct running across the floor. If you're considering the KuulAire PACKA50 for a more appropriate application, I would like to tell you about a feature that wasn't mentioned anywhere in the product information. The top of the unit has a very large cavity that is covered with a door that you open to find a knob to adjust the amount of humidity the unit creates. You can clearly see the water stream down a series of holes that open above a honeycomb type material covering the air intake to the unit. This cavern looks like it was made specifically to place ice into to further cool the water. In fact, that's really the only reason the area could exist in my opinion. Why it wasn't mentioned anywhere is a mystery. In any case, it holds about four ice trays of ice. I put ice cubes in the area and it immediately increased the cooling power of the unit by quite a bit. Worked perfectly!

Good, but has a smell March 24, 2011

This unit does what I needed it to do. Provide humidity in my arid AZ bedroom. However, the filter has a glue that holds it together. When using the cooling aspect, once can clearly smell this glue and it is not horrible or bearable, but not pleasant either. The manual says this goes away in a week or so. It did not for mine, but I am sensitive to smells.

Unfortunately this means I don't use it because I don't want my room to smell like this. I am content at the moment with creating another filter from other evap coolers media like: Relion Humidifier Filter WF813, 2 Pack If this doesn't work then this thing is worth 2-3 stars max for me.

Other notes:
-This thing is loud. Put it in the farthest corner of your room so that the sound does not drown out TV and etc. Even the lowest things is as loud as a vornado fan on max.
-After taking it apart once to clean it now makes a "drip drip" noise like the classic water faucet at night. Difficult to get to sleep because it isn't constant. Another reason to have it away from the bed or TV.
-Can't comment on it's heat-reducing capabilities since I haven't tried it during that time.
-Difficult to fill, be sure to have a bucket.
-I use a pur faucet filter to fill it with water and so far so "powder" residue on electronics so far.
-Humidity effect works very well, I have to watch it so that it doesn't go above 60% in my room.
