5.0 out of 5 stars One of the greatest!, January 15, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Kwamina (1961 Original Broadway Cast) (Audio CD)
The cast album of "KWAMINA" is an absolute jewel. The score has everything from love ballads that are so touching they break your heart, to comedy numbers with extremely witty lyrics, to rhythmic ensemble numbers that make you want to get up and dance. It has everything a great Broadway musical score should have. And is there any singer alive who can match the beautiful purity of Sally Ann Howes' gorgeous voice? When she sings, 'Another Time, Another Place,' it brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. This score is up there with the greatest of the great.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sally Ann Howes sings rare Adler gem, June 18, 2010

This review is from: Kwamina (1961 Original Broadway Cast) (Audio CD)
Set during a period of great political and sociological turmoil in the Belgian Congo, KWAMINA tells the story of an unlikely (albeit inevitable) love story between Eve, a female British doctor, played by Sally Ann Howes; and Kwamina (Terry Carter), a native medical student recently returned from training in England.

Despite it's strong, highly emotional score from Richard Adler, KWAMINA's interracial love story was perhaps too much for Broadway audiences to accept in 1961. It closed after three weeks and 32 performances. The cast album was recorded two days after the last performance and is full of energy and passion; Sally Ann Howes, in particular, has never been better on record.

Composer-lyricist Richard Adler created the role of Eve with Sally Ann Howes in mind. Having recently married Ms Howes, Adler first wrote a TV musical adaptation of "The Gift of the Magi" especially for her, and was also toying with the idea of Howes starring as Mildred in a proposed musical version of "Of Human Bondage". A veteran of many shows in her native England ("Bet Your Life", "Paint Your Wagon", "Summer Song", "Romance in Candlelight"); Sally Ann Howes first came to the attention of Broadway audiences as the first replacement for Julie Andrews in "My Fair Lady" (rumour has it that she turned down the part three times before finally accepting--but at a higher salary than Ms Andrews had been paid).

You only need to listen to a few of Eve's songs ("What Happened to Me Tonight?", "What's Wrong with Me?", and in particular the wrenching finale "Another Time, Another Place") to appreciate Ms Howes' mastery as one of THE finest female performers from Broadway's golden age. As a longtime fan of Howes, I don't believe it gets much better than her performance on the KWAMINA album. Perhaps it's the emotion of being so closely linked with the material, or the show's early demise, but the passion and intensity of her singing is breathtaking.

Originally issued in Angel's short-lived "Broadway Classics" series, KWAMINA is now available again as part of Arkiv Music's CD-on-demand programme. Highly recommended.
