Gr. 2^-4. Third grader Ronald squabbles a lot with his know-it-all, sixth-grade sister, Latrice, and when she tells him about a Kwanzaa contest, he determines to beat her and win the $50 prize. Each competitor must put on a performance that celebrates some aspect of African tradition, and Ronald chooses to tell a story using an alligator he carves from soap. The authors have created a believable, likable character whom children will cheer on, and the chapter-book format, with large type, will not intimidate readers. This is a Kwanza book in name only--the celebration has been postponed from its usual after-Christmas week to a later time because the community center is being remodeled--but it still communicates a good deal of information on African customs.
