From Booklist
Gr. 4-6. Brady's excellent introduction to the African American holiday of Kwanzaa not only clearly explains the origin and rituals of the holiday, but also introduces traditional foods and crafts. The 18 recipes included range from simple side and main dishes to salads and desserts. A "Cooking Smart" section contains helpful hints and safety tips about handling raw food, hot pans, and knives. Instructions for an African headdress and skirt are also provided. The author's personal voice is a strong element in the text: she uses family anecdotes to engage readers as she emphasizes community, personal responsibility, and celebration. With high-quality color photographs throughout, this well-designed volume will be a solid purchase. A glossary of Swahili terms is appended. Janice Del Negro
