Haki Madhubuti is the author of books such as Black Men, Obsolete, Single, Dangerous?: The Afrikan American Family in Transition, Liberation Narratives: New and Collected Poems: 1966-2009, YellowBlack: The First Twenty-One Years of a Poet's Life, Tough Notes: Letters to Young Black Men, African-Centered Education: Its Value, Importance, and Necessity in the Development of Black Children, Claiming Earth: Race, Rage, Rape, Redemption: Blacks Seeking a Culture of Enlightened Empowerment, and many others.

This 16-page booklet was published in 1972, and was one of the first explanations of Kwanzaa (proposed in 1966 by Maulana Karenga, author of books such as Kwanzaa: origin, concepts, practice, The African American Holiday of Kwanzaa: A Celebration of Family, Community & Culture, and Kwanzaa: A Celebration of Family, Community and Culture).

The book briefly explains the creation of Kwanzaa; the Seven Principles; the Symbols of Kwanzaa; the Karamu (feast), and has a pronunciation guide.
