5.0 out of 5 stars The best book for baby garment

3.0 out of 5 stars Looks like a great book- wish I had the patterns so I can actually make the projects inside it!
I'm sure this book is fantastic. But let me tell you a funny story.

Well, here it goes. I'm pretty clueless when it comes to sewing. I bought this book, thinking, I'd get the stuff the book told me to buy, asking the people at the fabric store lots of annoying questions, then hope my mother in law would give me a sewing lesson. She makes baby clothes from...

I started sewing to make something for my coming baby, which means I was new to sewing. Yet I was able to prepare almost the complete wardrobe for my baby with this book.

The patterns and instructions are SUPERB.

People wouldn't belive they're homemade unless I reveal so.

Plus there are many options for variation if you want, and after studying carefully, it wasn't hard to imagine some variation myself.

I learned a lot, saved a lot of money, and could calm down the anxiety of the third trimester sewing for my baby.

I recommend this book to any people with a little bit of knack for craft and and time. Just a word: buying a serger (in addtiion to a sewing machine) will save you a lot of time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great clothes for kids!, September 27, 2005
This review is from: Kwik Sew's Sewing for Baby (Paperback)
When my son was born, I was really frustrated by the lack of commercial patterns available for little boys. It's a wasteland; I had 800 choices of sundress but no comfortable, durable patterns that didn't involve daisy applique!

I stumbled across Kwik Sew while taking my machine in to be serviced and it has been invaluable. I can't praise the patterns too much. The sizing is excellent, the patterns go together unfailingly (and anyone who's ever struggled with a poorly drafted pattern knows how frustrating it is when they don't!) and there are an almost limitless variation to explore. I've made dozens of clothes, from shirts to jumpers to pants and coats, even his first Hallowe'en costume. I don't own a serger but the patterns still finish and wear beautifully, just with a close zig zag.

My son has now graduated to the toddler book and it's just as well designed. This book is invaluable and you will NEVER find better infant patterns for the money. My copy has been lent to a number of expectant friends (sewers and non-sewers alike) and the book always comes back to me with "I'm returning your book. It's so fantastic, I've bought my own copy!"

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Module Patterns, October 7, 2005

The patterns fit perfect to my grandson. I live in Argentina and I could not get so easy patterns in modules that allow you to create different garments. If you follow the explanations you will not have any problem in sewing because they are very clear.

I recommend the book because it is excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great choice for beginners or advanced sewers!, January 18, 2010

I had tried patterns for boy outfits from Simplicity and McCall's and found the instructions confusing, with limited choices of outfits too. I tried my first Kwik Sew pattern and was excited to find that the instructions were really good. Their pieces are cut in a way that minimizes the steps you need and the 1/4 in seam allowance is perfect for a sewing machine overcast stitch or a serger.

This book has basic patterns that can be mixed and matched. My first project was a romper. The picture showed a girl in a romper with attached feet and a ruffled collar, but I easily switched it to have cuffs at the feet and arms, and a knit ribbing collar. I also left out the zipper since I used sweatshirt fleece, so I can pull it over my son's head like a t-shirt and just fasten the leg snaps. The book also includes several pages of applique pictures. You just cut out an applique from fabric, fold under the edges, use fusible webbing (iron on) to stick it to the outfit, and stitch the edges with a decorative stich.

If you use cloth diapers, you'll appreciate that the Kwik Sew patterns will fit over the diapers. In fact, I used Kwik Sew 3690 to make diapers too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for DIY moms/grandmas, January 24, 2010

This review is from: Kwik Sew's Sewing for Baby (Paperback)
I have been sewing simple projects for 15 years or so, and I emphasize "simple". When I got this book in the mail last week, I felt a bit overwhelmed by the wordy explanations and the non-traditional format. I read through the sleeper pattern and figured it was over my head, but tried it on some scrap fabric anyway. All I can say is EASY....much easier than it appears when reading through it. I have since made 3 sleepers, and don't even need to look at the instructions anymore when sewing. I have also made the hooded bath towel which was about as basic as you can get. I look forward to making the bedding set soon and am confident I will be able to make my way through more outfits. The instructions seem wordy and confusing until you really get into the project, and then the extra pointers and slow progression of information actually comes in really handy for a novice like myself. I looked at MANY books before deciding on this one, and it is the only one I will need for my baby.

I'm not an expert seamstress by any stretch of the imagination, but these directions and tips are very easy to follow. Am pleased w/ the results of the items I've made to date.

I found this book to be most informative. I haven't sewn in many years but with a new grandbaby blessing our lives; I wanted to start sewing for him. The book is detailed and the patterns are awesome.

Now that my girls are much too big for this book, I went to give my copy to my sister-in-law....and found that I had completely worn mine out. I sewed dozens of outfits from these patterns, for my girls and for friends. Now I am glad to pass the fun on with a new copy for my niece!

I love this book and have made lots of outfits for my son (impossible to buy cute clothes for boys that don't cost a fortune). Easy to adapt patterns too. Only criticism is that the pictures of babies and their outfits are hideous and could put you off making the items. The sweatshirt and pants set is soo cute from a stretch cotton velour - my son looks like he has his very own rap-star outfit!!

This book was even better than I imagined! It really shows you how to sew everything you need for a baby! It's great for those who are beginners or who are more advanced! Some of the projects are really easy, but some are more difficult.

It also comes with a master pattern set to trace and use (you don't want to cut the master, you might mess up or need another size later!), and this was extremely helpful!

I'd consider buying another copy for a DIY mommy-to-be like me in the future!
