This is the best little item. mUst have for the home owner of Kwikset locks!!! It saves time when you want to rekey your Kwikset locks b/c you don't have to worry about buying keyed alike locksets. You also don't have to worry about screwing up rekeying by pulling out the little tool when you are not suppose to and then none of yoour keys work!!! All you do is use the tool to reset the tumbler and key to what key you want to. Great time saver.

Kwikset's SmartKey system is perfect for rental properties and vacation homes, where frequent lock changes can be a hassle, not to mention costly. Rekeying a lock is a snap, as long, as you have the original key. If not, the SmartKey reset cradle will help out in these situations since it will allow you to rekey a SmartKey lock without access to the original key. The only caveat is that you must have access to the tumbler, which means the interior side of the lock must be accessible. As long as you haven't been locked out, all you need to do is unscrew the lock assembly remove the tumbler and insert in the reset cradle. A quick twist and you are ready to train the lock with a new key; no messing with springs and pins.

A must-have for SmartKey owners. Helps when you've screwed up your programming (still can't figure out how I did THAT!)

I had no problem using this tool to reset a smartkey lock that got messed up during a rekey. It took longer to read the instructions than it did to actually perform the reset.

a very simple to use item and a must for the new smartkey users because the rekeying is easy to mess up for a beginner (like i did). with the reset cradle you are back in business in no time.

The Kwikset 83260 reset cradle work as it intended. I am an professional locksmith with over 35 years experience, while I was reseting my daughter lockset, I make a mistake that render all key non-workable. The cradle will reset the plug and from there you could reset the plug to the key that you wanted to work in the lock. Make sure to follow the step in the instruction with the lock. The only thing I found, the plug after inserting into the cradle and reset, it takes little pushing from the back to get the plug out. I normally would have purchase this product from my locksmith supplier but they didn't have it in stock. Amazon was able to get it to me in 2-3 day, my supplier might have taken at least 2-3 weeks to get from the factory. You will need other tools to remove the plug from the knob lock. Follow all instructions carefully.

!!!!BUT!!!!

If the cylinder is in a handle instead of a deadbolt you need another other tool as well, the "kwikset cylinder removal tool."

The kwikset cylinder removal tool is a cheap little thing that costs $0.88 if you can find it. None of my local stores have them for sale (although they all had them in their toolboxes - and would, as a complementary service, remove the cylinder for you).

IMHO it should have been included (thus the missing star).

You have to follow the instructions carefully and pay attention to what you're doing, but it will allow you to reset a smartkey cylinder and rekey it to any other smartkey you want.

I was able to rekey about ten old SmartKey handlesets & deadbolts that didn't take a rekey(original key wouldn't work, new key wouldn't work) with this tool. It works great, couldn't be easier to use, and is well designed. No complaints. Pretty cheap compared to the price of the actual handlesets and deadbolts too.
