When I decided to replace my entry lock to a combination capable deadbolt as well as conventional key, I had at least two brands to pick from. I primarily chose Kwikset because of the built in motor that activates closure of the deadbolt after I'm inside (after about 20-30 seconds), in case I might forget to manually lock the door. During the decision process, I noticed that the product I was considering, also incorporated a concept called SMART KEY, but dismissed the feature as an extra that I probably would never use. About a year later, I misplaced my keys OR LOST THEM, and was concerned about someone finding them and having access to my home.

I reinvestigated the SMART KEY feature key, and then contacted Kwikset tech support to confirm my understanding that I could re-key my lock using their SMART KEY kit....i.e., the kit, which could be ordered from AMAZON, would contain a replacement key. When I received the kit, it did include a new key plus several duplicates of the new key, together with easily understood instructions on re-keying the lock myself. IMPORTANT!!!! Although I had lost my keys, I did have a duplicate of the old key AND THAT DUPLICATE OF THE ORIGINAL KEY WAS NEEDED during the re-keying process. A slick concept, and if ever needed, a money saver for the home owner.

When I read the description I thought the additional 2 gold keys provided would allow me to have master key for other smartkey locks and then have keys that only worked for one particular lock. That is not what this package provides. You have 4 keys to rekey for everyone in your household. When you go on vacation you can use the additional 2 gold keys to temporarily rekey to give your neighbor or relative a key that they can use to enter your home in your absence. When you return you can rekey back to the original key rendering the temporary keys useless. So, if your neighbor copies the key and gives you back the one that you originally gave her, she can't use the copied key to enter your home. It is an interesting idea. However, if you don't trust your neighbor with a key why would you give her a key at all?

4 keys is perfect, If the tenant wants more keys, they can go make them, I only ever give the tenants two keys anyway. I've always made 4 keys, two for me, two for the tenant.

Before I've just told the locksmith to grab some old quickset from his dead pile and duplicate it, but this is just about the same cost as having the locksmith cut 4 keys anyway, plus the bonus of two more.

The Smart Key feature is ingenious! These are extremely difficult to find now, but Amazon had all the locks, handles, and key sets needed for my home. Excellent pricing too.

also worth noting: the locksets survived even in the extreme salt air-- the outsides got a little rusty but the lock and rekeying mechanism has worked for years.

I re-keyed 3 knobs and 2 deadbolts in about 5 minutes, but that includes travel time between doors :) The 2 temp keys are nice if you want to have someone watch your house while you're away: Just re-key your front door to the temp key you give out and (re-)re-key when you get back home.

Amazon shipped out my rekey set quickly. The keys are high quality, which is critical with smartkey locks. Duplicate keys improperly cut at a local store are the number one reason for binding or damaged Smartkey cylinders.

I recently purchased 3 of the Smartkey lever locks for my interior doors and got this kit because it came with 4 identical cut keys (and 2 different keys for temporary access) for me to re-key the 3 locks to these 4 keys. Worked like a charm and done under 20 seconds for each lock. If I ever need more than 4 of the keys for whatever reason (e.g. lost the keys), I can have one of them re-keyed at the locksmith.

The kit worked fine as did the basic rekeying instructions. What was unclear was that the two extra keys are keyed differently. They are for use when you want to provide access to a repairman etc. after rekeying the lock for their use.

Ordered to assist in "changing the locks" at my new (to me) house that has "smart-key" locks. Worked like a charm, no problems!
