4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Great Toy
This toy is pretty simple - It's a "birdhouse" with 2 holes, and 3 little birds that you can stuff inside. But my dog LOVES it - he hasn't gotten tired of it yet, 3 weeks later. There must be something about the shape/colors/design of the birds - they are his new favorite toys, and he carries them all around three of them stuffed into his mouth. He also enjoys pulling...

2.0 out of 5 stars Better to Buy Hide-A-Squirrel
My 2 dachshunds loved, loved, loved Hide-A-Squirrel. They still play with the "hides" after chewing them open so the stuffing & squeaker are gone. Fortunately, they had lots of play before they chewed the squirrels open. Not so with the birds...they chewed off the beaks in a couple days with stuffing everywhere. Unfamiliar with Hide-A-Bee (it have one 5 star rating)...

There must be something about the shape/colors/design of the birds - they are his new favorite toys, and he carries them all around three of them stuffed into his mouth. He also enjoys pulling them out of the birdhouse, over and over again. The squeakers inside the birds break easily though, and the birdhouse has a plastic "base" inside the fleece that can be chewed up. Surprisingly, my pitbull mix, who normally chews and tears apart his squeaker toys, has been very gentle with the birds.

This toy has a wire frame which after a time came loose and apart and could be dangerous to your pet.

1.0 out of 5 stars Had to take away after 2 minutes of playing!, December 25, 2010
This review is from: Kyjen Hide-A-Bird Puzzle Plush Intercative Dog Toy, Large (Misc.)
Last Christmas we gave our 13 year old dog Hide-a-Squirrel, which he loved. It lasted well through the year. We got him hide-a-bird this Christmas as we were sure he'd love it. He did, but within munutes he had fuzz from the bird's bodies in his mouth. The squirrels seem more stirdy and, except for the tails, the fibers are much shorter and not easy to pull on, so they are much safer. It was very frustrating to have to take our boy's toy away from him... he is still looking for it but I have to think about his safety. Even with us supervising the play time, as the manufacturer suggests on the box, I can't do anything to stop him from ingesting all the brightly covered fabric (i'm sure colored with unsafe chemicals). Did I mention he is 13? I can only imagine how quickly a younger dog would pull these birds apart. I just don't understand why anyone would make such an unsafe toy. Very frustrating...

This is an excellent toy for most dogs. I say most because it is probably not ideal for dogs who are bent on the destruction of every toy they get :) My dog is a one and a half year old 45 lb border collie mix, and this is one of her favorite toys. She loved the Hide-A-Squirrel toy also until my sister's lab destroyed that one. I hide this toy from my sister's dog when he comes to visit, but Lacey has it out all day long and she plays with it a lot, sometimes even roughly, and both the bird house and birds are still fully intact (much to my shock--she typically tries, and succeeds, to tear out the squeaker in all squeaky toys). The nice thing is, this is a toy that she enjoys playing with by herself even after she has "solved" it by getting all the birds out, but it's also something we can play with together. My hands are small enough that I can reach in through one hole of the bird house, grab a bird, and make it peek out the other hole, squeak it, then pull it back in before she can get it. It's a very fun game for her, but she figured out a while back that it's me doing it so she goes back and forth between trying to get the bird and yipping at me :) This is definitely one of the best toys I've ever gotten for her, and I highly recommend it to anyone whose dog does not destroy everything in sight. This is a sturdy toy, but it's still plush, and plush is not for every dog.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great second step and an wonderful training aid for fearful rescue dogs, February 25, 2009

We bought this the HIDE-A-BIRD toy for our 9 month old boxer-mix rescue special needs puppy. She loves the HIDE-A-BEE toy so we bought this to add some variety to her play time which it has done. We stuff the birds inside and she pulls them out and then we start the game over. By supervising the play, the game is more interactive and thus a good bonding game with her plus supervised play and preserves the life of the birds. At first, we stuck an aromatic treat in the birdhouse to arouse her interest in the toy. So far, she has not managed to destroy the birds, but when she does, we extend the life of the toy by stuffing other toys in the birdhouse. The birdhouse is very sturdy and a toy in and of itself. Our dog likes to poke it, shove it with her nose, and chase it.

I very highly recommend this toy for dogs who are extremely fearful (our dog's special needs). These games have helped her to gain more confidence and come out of her shell. They were the first steps in her change from a dog who lived in fear 100% of the time to a dog who started to enjoy playing and having fun. The game keeps her mind occupied and seems to reduce the free-floating fear and anxiety that she had when we first adopted her. We have has this toy for several months now and she still enjoys it. I would recommend buying this toy after HIDE-A-BEE, however, especially in the case of a fearful dog. It was more difficult for her to figure out how to get the birds out of the birdhouse as compared to HIDE-A-BEE. Even now the HIDE-A-BIRD presents more of challenge. Of course, this is a good thing now! I am glad we went from the easier toy to this one rather than the other way around. Now she needs the extra challenge to keep her interest.

This toy would probably be a fun toy for most dogs but if you have taken on a rescue dog or have an extremely fearful dog, I especially recommend this entire line of toys and the HIDE-A-BIRD as a great second step. In addition to love and a good home, these toys have been the single most effective and practical steps that have inspired a very visible improvement in our dog.

I bought this for my Chihuahua. It's so cute! I bought the hide a squirrel years ago, so I wanted to try this one. I like to break up treats and hide them in the birdhouse along with the birds. Our dog then has to work to get them out. It's a great puzzle for them and they just love it. The birds squeak too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hide A Bird Plush Interactive Dog Toy, January 30, 2010

Our black lab loves birds and each spring when the birdies come to make their home in our two bird houses in our back yard way on top of the teatherball poll she keeps watch. When they take their first flight and land on the ground she is right on it and usually gets them and then puts them on the sidewalk for us to see. Thus, the Hide-a-bird is her new favorite toy. She plays with it by herself but usually wants us to play with her. The toy is holding up well. The fur is getting matted because she has it in her mouth so much that it gets wet with all the slobber. Her best loved toys are matted. None of the seams are tearing open. She has the Platapos with eggs by this same company and she loves it too.

My shih tzu wasn't too interested in the birds in the house. She likes the birds alone. Or if I put treats in the house, she goes for the house. But she doesn't play with the toy as I anticipated she would. I was slightly disappointed considering all the rave reviews and the high price tag.

I like that it's all washable. Unfortunately, one of the birds heads is already falling off - before I even needed to wash it.
