Plush Puppies by Kyjen
Seek. Squeak. Repeat.

These cute chirping birds will keep your dog on the chase! Like our other puzzle plush toys, the Hide A Bird works in reverse of regular puzzles: your dog takes the birds out; then you stuff them back in. This toy provides an outlet for your dog's natural searching and stalking instincts, and helps to develop intelligence and problem-solving skills. The bird inserts can be replaced again and again for hours of fun!

Plush Puppies by Kyjen

  2. Provides hide-and-seek enrichment

  3. Dog takes birds out; you stuff them back in

Product Description

The Hide-A-Bird dog toy offers owners an innovative approach to playtime. This engaging toy works as a reverse puzzle. You hide the squeaky Birds inside the plush tree trunk; dogs use their problem-solving skills to sniff them out. By encouraging them to seek and stalk the squeaky prey, the Hide-A-Bird pet toy provides pups with an outlet for their instinctual behaviors.

My 2 dachshunds loved, loved, loved Hide-A-Squirrel. They still play with the "hides" after chewing them open so the stuffing & squeaker are gone. Fortunately, they had lots of play before they chewed the squirrels open. Not so with the birds...they chewed off the beaks in a couple days with stuffing everywhere. Unfamiliar with Hide-A-Bee (it has one 5 star rating). Better to buy Hide-A-Squirrel. Note there are refill squirrels available.

This toy is pretty simple - It's a "birdhouse" with 2 holes, and 3 little birds that you can stuff inside. But my dog LOVES it - he hasn't gotten tired of it yet, 3 weeks later. There must be something about the shape/colors/design of the birds - they are his new favorite toys, and he carries them all around three of them stuffed into his mouth. He also enjoys pulling them out of the birdhouse, over and over again. The squeakers inside the birds break easily though, and the birdhouse has a plastic "base" inside the fleece that can be chewed up. Surprisingly, my pitbull mix, who normally chews and tears apart his squeaker toys, has been very gentle with the birds.

This toy has a wire frame which after a time came loose and apart and could be dangerous to your pet.

We've purchased a number of kyjen "hide-a..." toys and our golden retriever puppy loves them all. He loves this one too, but we had to take it away because he chewed it up a bit (normal for all the toys) and inside was a long flat plastic insert along the base of the toy. I haven't seen this in any of the other kyjen toys. I assume it's there to hold the shape of the bird house. I know many of the toys have plastic squeekers that the dog shouldn't be chewing on, but this plastic seems worse to me and feels completely unsafe... It's very hard but can be chewed apart (like rawhide) leaving your dog with hard chunks of plastic stuck in his throat. Luckily I caught it before our dog got into too much of it, and he was able to cough up the little piece he was eating. Because of this unnecessary piece of plastic sewn into the toy I would not recommend the purchase of the hide-a-bird toy.

Last Christmas we gave our 13 year old dog Hide-a-Squirrel, which he loved. It lasted well through the year. We got him hide-a-bird this Christmas as we were sure he'd love it. He did, but within munutes he had fuzz from the bird's bodies in his mouth. The squirrels seem more stirdy and, except for the tails, the fibers are much shorter and not easy to pull on, so they are much safer. It was very frustrating to have to take our boy's toy away from him... he is still looking for it but I have to think about his safety. Even with us supervising the play time, as the manufacturer suggests on the box, I can't do anything to stop him from ingesting all the brightly covered fabric (i'm sure colored with unsafe chemicals). Did I mention he is 13? I can only imagine how quickly a younger dog would pull these birds apart. I just don't understand why anyone would make such an unsafe toy. Very frustrating...

This is an excellent toy for most dogs. I say most because it is probably not ideal for dogs who are bent on the destruction of every toy they get :) My dog is a one and a half year old 45 lb border collie mix, and this is one of her favorite toys. She loved the Hide-A-Squirrel toy also until my sister's lab destroyed that one. I hide this toy from my sister's dog when he comes to visit, but Lacey has it out all day long and she plays with it a lot, sometimes even roughly, and both the bird house and birds are still fully intact (much to my shock--she typically tries, and succeeds, to tear out the squeaker in all squeaky toys). The nice thing is, this is a toy that she enjoys playing with by herself even after she has "solved" it by getting all the birds out, but it's also something we can play with together. My hands are small enough that I can reach in through one hole of the bird house, grab a bird, and make it peek out the other hole, squeak it, then pull it back in before she can get it. It's a very fun game for her, but she figured out a while back that it's me doing it so she goes back and forth between trying to get the bird and yipping at me :) This is definitely one of the best toys I've ever gotten for her, and I highly recommend it to anyone whose dog does not destroy everything in sight. This is a sturdy toy, but it's still plush, and plush is not for every dog.

We bought this the HIDE-A-BIRD toy for our 9 month old boxer-mix rescue special needs puppy. She loves the HIDE-A-BEE toy so we bought this to add some variety to her play time which it has done. We stuff the birds inside and she pulls them out and then we start the game over. By supervising the play, the game is more interactive and thus a good bonding game with her plus supervised play and preserves the life of the birds. At first, we stuck an aromatic treat in the birdhouse to arouse her interest in the toy. So far, she has not managed to destroy the birds, but when she does, we extend the life of the toy by stuffing other toys in the birdhouse. The birdhouse is very sturdy and a toy in and of itself. Our dog likes to poke it, shove it with her nose, and chase it.

I very highly recommend this toy for dogs who are extremely fearful (our dog's special needs). These games have helped her to gain more confidence and come out of her shell. They were the first steps in her change from a dog who lived in fear 100% of the time to a dog who started to enjoy playing and having fun. The game keeps her mind occupied and seems to reduce the free-floating fear and anxiety that she had when we first adopted her. We have has this toy for several months now and she still enjoys it. I would recommend buying this toy after HIDE-A-BEE, however, especially in the case of a fearful dog. It was more difficult for her to figure out how to get the birds out of the birdhouse as compared to HIDE-A-BEE. Even now the HIDE-A-BIRD presents more of challenge. Of course, this is a good thing now! I am glad we went from the easier toy to this one rather than the other way around. Now she needs the extra challenge to keep her interest.
