4.0 out of 5 stars Dog is Crazy about this
Customer Video Review     Length:: 3:04 Mins
After seeing these "hide-a-squirrel" and egg babies toys for a while, I just couldn't picture my 40lb boxer mix puppy (13 months) doing anything but tearing it up and swallowing the eggs. But she doesn't. She gets the eggs out, sets them aside, and looks for more. Once the eggs are out, there's really no stuffing to worry about (except the head, but...

3.0 out of 5 stars Cute concept
The concept of this toy is cute, but I think it works better with dogs that are "critical thinkers" versus "literal thinkers." My dogs love plush toys and they both love playing with the eggs, but neither of them ever caught on to the hide and seek aspect of egg finding. One of them totally lost interest once the eggs were hidden inside. I guess with her it was out of...

But she doesn't. She gets the eggs out, sets them aside, and looks for more. Once the eggs are out, there's really no stuffing to worry about (except the head, but she's not interested in that part). She did get a LITTLE batting out of the cavity where the eggs go - but the seam stayed in tact. If you're having a hard time picturing what these are all about, see the video!

5.0 out of 5 stars Crack for dogs, August 17, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Your dog will love this. You should follow the instructions and show him how to get the squeaky eggs out without destroying it, and then it will last quite a while, even with a heavy chewer like ours. If your dog is one of those ones that instantly tries to destroy anything soft, this won't hold up, but if he's just a player, this will last a while.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great big dog toy too!, October 30, 2008
So, I was a little skeptical about buying this, since my dog is a massive german shepherd that tends to make it her mission to remove all the inside stuffing of toys (and geniunely enjoys it.), but I bought it anyway just to see. Since I have given it to her, she has barely put it down. She LOVES this toy, and somehow, most of its stuffing has stayed inside! I think the part that she likes most about the toy is the removable squeakers that come inside. She can sit there squeaking for-e-ver, until she gets them out. I'm so glad I bought this for her, and will probably buy more of the egg-baby types.

3.0 out of 5 stars Cute concept, May 9, 2009

This review is from: Kyjen Puzzle Plush Egg Babies Dog Toy, Dinosaur, 5 Eggs (Misc.)
I guess with her it was out of sight out of mind. She never made an effort to look for the eggs even when she saw me put them inside. The other dog took a more literal approach. She never bothered to look for the pouch opening, she instead made her own opening by chewing straight through the dinosaur's back. She did successfully release the eggs, however the toy was ruined for any future play. I guess it could serve as an IQ test of sorts which my dogs clearly failed. Still, the toy could be fun for a dog who cares to figure it out. At the very least, they still enjoy the eggs. I would say, if you think your dog is a critical thinker or just want to find out, buy this toy; otherwise go for the egg refills.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not suitable for large breeds!, January 29, 2010

I bought this for my very large American Bulldog because he loves anything with a squeaker in it. He immediately took out all the squeakers and played with all of them. I never thought in a million years this could be harmful. The next morning, I woke up to hearing him throw up. I went and checked on him and sure enough, he had thrown up an ENTIRE egg. I had no idea that he could even swallow something that large! Luckily he threw it up and didn't choke on it. I immediately had to throw the toy away. I have definitely learned my lesson with giving him small chew toys. I just wanted to warn anyone with larger dogs to make sure they watch their dog the entire time they are playing with this toy and if you are not able to then you probably should not purchase this toy.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not Good, September 28, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
My Chihuahua loves the Hide-A-Bee and Hide-A-Squirrel, but she just ignores this toy. I showed her how to get the eggs out several times, but the opening was just too tight for her to get anything out. I tried just putting one egg in at a time, but it was still too difficult. I gave the toy to someone with a large dog, but that dog wasn't interested either. A friend bought the same toy for her Havanese, but that dog couldn't get the eggs out either. Three different dogs and none of them played with the toy.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not Durable Enough for My Pooch, September 30, 2010

I have a lab mix 3-month old puppy (~16 lbs) and he tore one nostril off in the first 10 minutes. The second nostril came off the next day and the fabric ripped. My puppy gleefully ripped the batting out of the bill in record time and enjoyed that far more than rooting around for the squeaky eggs. The nostrils consist of thread that's looped around about 8 times to form the appearance of the nostrils. This toy was only played with indoors. Two of the eggs already had splits on the seams straight out of the packaging.

I don't know if my pups is just too rough for plush toys or if this was truly a bad design. For comparison, I got the small mallard (AKC Mallard Dog Toy, Small) and that's still going strong, despite being carried around the yard, squeaked in rapid succession, dragged through and ground into the mud, tumbling down the stairs and run through the washing machine. He got that 6 days ago and there's just a little fuzz missing from the nose.

I think the platypus was made for gentle dogs.

1.0 out of 5 stars Destroyed in 5 minutes!, October 3, 2010

Reading the reviews I was thinking that finally I could buy a toy for my dog that he wouldn't rip up quickly. I even watched the video on this ad, and it all looked so beautiful and made sense. Then the toy came in the mail from Amazon. My dog had no interest in taking the eggs out. He was more interested in making his way to the stuffing inside the Platypus, and proceeded to rip apart the animal- and within 5 minutes the stuffing was pulled out all over the place. My dog, is a sweet 22 lb Cockapoo, a therapy dog, who is gentle and sweet- but just loves taking out the stuffing from toys. Anyway- lesson be learned...a strong chewer will always be a strong chewer. Buyer Beware!

4.0 out of 5 stars Lasted Awhile..., October 5, 2011

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I have two dogs that love to play tug of war with whatever we give them. That usually means that toys get destroyed very quickly. The platypus toy lasted the longest of any of the different ones we bought. We also got the Turtle and the Shark. The eggs last forever and each one comes with 5 eggs. So we have plenty of eggs laying around but no more toys to hide them inside : It's tough for dogs to play tug of war with just the eggs.

Like I said, the toy lasted quite awhile (compared to the other ones we had bought them in the past) so I'd recommend it. The best part was that there was no stuffing to pick up once they ripped it apart. We also have the Tree Trunk with the Squirrels (available on amazon) that they really like too. They destroyed the squirrels pretty quickly but the trunk seems to be holding it's ground (no pun intended).

If I had to request one of the other, I'd say this is the best option because it comes with the eggs and they seem to hold up the best.

5.0 out of 5 stars shih-poo sized eggs!, October 3, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I have a tiny shih poo dog with a tiny shih poo mouth and he loves loves loves this toy. The eggs are a perfect size and texture for him to comfortably play with for hours. Pefect size for fetch as well. I've had for three weeks now and the toy is holding up great, only one egg as bit the dust and I suspect foul play from my killer dachshund mix. Well worth the money in entertainment value!
