A Hilarious Slice of Gay Life,
By
This review is from: Kyle's Bed & Breakfast (Paperback)
Greg Fox's "Kyle's Bed and Breakfast" is one of the best comics in the gay press today, and here he collects the first few years of his strip detailing the interactions and adventures of a collection of residents of a Long Island bed and breakfast. Using a multiple panel format familiar to Sunday comics readers, Fox breaks apart stereotypes as he chronicles the lives of characters with very divergent personalities. Because the strip appears every other week, each strip stands alone but can arc through a single storyline in several episodes. It is nice to have this collection and to be able to sit down to discover how his characters became fleshed out over the past few years. The strips may not be ground breaking but they are wildly entertaining, giving you people you may find yourself caring about. A comfortable place to relax and enjoy gay America.

Couldn't Put It Down,
By Aaron Wood (Fayetteville, North Carolina USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Kyle's Bed & Breakfast (Paperback)
Been a fan of the comic strip for a few years. Have been waiting for a while to see the strips in complilation form. This book did not disappoint. Has the first 112 episodes, which covers the whole first five years of the strip, 1998-2003. The additional material is first-rate, a couple of additional never-published-before episodes and a lot of bio info about creator Greg Fox. Really liked the various promo pics of the strip's characters throughout the bio area. And the detailed floorplan of the B&B house is magnificent! This is a steal at the low selling price. I know what I'm buying as Christmas gifts this year!

KYLE'S BED AND BREAKFAST,

This book collects the early episodes of the online gay comic strip soap opera KYLE'S BED AND BREAKFAST. Greg Fox is a tremendously talented artist and writer. The characters in this series are just like people one may know in real life. I highly recommend the book and would rate it 10 stars if it were possible to do so.

A book that I would love to live in.,
By Thom Y. "T.Y." (Littleton, CO USA) - See all my reviews

Sometimes you read a book and it makes you wish you could be transported there and live and hang out with the characters. A book that you don't want to end. Kyles B&B is one of those books, although, thankfully, the comic strip continues in newspapers and magazines, so it is not really over. Like some of the other reviewers here, I am not a big comics fan, but this comic strip got me hooked after reading only a few episodes in a gay magazine. The characters are warm and funny, (well most of them. Some are pretty mean, but every story needs a villain). But mostly, they are real. They are people I grew to care deeply about as their various stories progress and intertwine over the episodes. I am grateful for this book, which collects the strip from the earliest episodes. And looking forward to seeing the next collection when it comes out.

Awesome Read!,
By JerryF (Cambridge, MA, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Kyle's Bed & Breakfast (Paperback)
I have to say I am not a big comic reader, but I kept seeing this comic strip week after week in my local paper, and it just drew me in against my will until I was hooked! Then I was frustrated I couldn't see the early episodes, but now this book is out, and I was able to catch up on what I missed, which was a lot. About 3 years worth out of the 5 years represented here. Maybe it was the hot guys that drew me in at first, but it was the stories that really made me a fan. It gives me a warm feeling reading about these guys who I really care about like they're my friends. This is a B&B I wish I could check into!

Witty, gentle trances de vie,

This review is from: Kyle's Bed & Breakfast (Paperback)
I love this "Situation comic", the characters are interesting and their personality defines itself during the story. You'll get lovingly et accustomed to them and their friends, dreawn with a realistic style very pleasant to the eye. Not only that, but the Author manages to introduce delicate issues in a very gentle and not at all superficial manner.

Kyle's B & B,
By Joan of Ark "J" (Belly of the Beast) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Kyle's Bed & Breakfast (Paperback)
Okay, I read a lot of gay comics and know that most of them today evolve around sex, but Kyle's B & B is way different, Greg Fox's work of art here evolves around five gay men living under one roof and having a more real life to it instead of just sex. They each experience relationships, heartbreaks, life hard choices, and happiness as almost a family. I actually love this comic book, it's one of the few comics I love to read over and over again. If you like to know more about it, visit Greg's website at [...] to read some comic strips of his work and to learn more of the artist.

Addictive, Sexy, Heart-wrenching, and Laugh-Out-Loud Funny!,

Everything I would ever want in a comic strip, and much more! To call it a "comic strip" is almost inaccurate. Kyle's B&B is more of a cinematic experience, the gay male TV show that we have all been waiting for, in comic strip form, (for now, at least. I cannot imagine this NOT becoming a TV show or movie at some point soon. The characters and plots are too rich to ignore). More than just hot guys in briefs, (though there certainly is plenty of that), this is a story of friendship and compassion told with lots of humor & warmth. And here, at last, are all the first 5 years of episodes of the comic strip gathered in one volume. As well as a fascinating introduction by creator Greg Fox that details how this all came to be. And even an additional extended episode, never published before, that ties everything together in the end. And blueprints of the B&B, too. My only question is, when is the next book coming out?

I have not be exposed to this comic strip before and I am sorry it took me so much time to find it. This strip (and most of the characters do) is often hilarious but beneath that, it is a warm and very true portrait of life. I can not wait until the next compilation. Thank you Greg Fox for letting us in the B&B in your mind.

I admit I haven't read most of this interminable soap opera. I always fall asleep. It is the story of a group of young men living in and around Kyle's Bed and Breakfast on Long Island, all drawn so similarly that one can't tell them apart except for very superficial tags: one is black, one Hispanic, one effeminate, one ancient (e.g., over 25). All are extremely attractive and impossibly buffed -- where do they find the time for hours at the gym, when they are either hating their buddy's new lover or falling in love with him on every second page, and endlessly dishing the rest of the time? No humor, no wit, no nothing except the extremely attractive youg men having incredibly boring conversations.Oh, and one of them is closeted to provide "tension" to the plotline. How do extremely handsome, extremely wealthy young men in today's New York City react to the realization that they are gay? They agonize with the internalized homophobia of a Kansas farmboy circa 1953. |
