4.0 out of 5 stars Kylie's First Albums, July 6, 2002
By
This review is from: Kylie Minogue x3 (Audio CD)
After I bought "Fever", I KNEW I had to know more about her and get as many albums of her as I could. I have recieved "Hits +" and "Light Years" (each of which are excellent), but I wanted her first albums. My wish came true with the purchase of this triple set, Kylie's first three. I will review each separately to give readers a better understanding of each album. Some people may want all 3, some may only want 2, etc., but this set is the best way to save money and get 3 terrific albums in the bargain. So, here we go!!

KYLIE---This one introduces Kylie to the world with her cover of the 60's hit "The Loco-Motion" and other good songs including "I Should Be So Lucky" and "It's No Secret". Produced by The Stock Aitken Waterman Team (who also produced hits by Samantha Fox and Bananarama), this album is 35 minutes long and has the fluffiest euro-pop I have ever heard. My kids and I can listen to this together, and we do. A very good album and completey harmless.

ENJOY YOURSLF---My favorite album of the set has got to be this 32 minute trip into more euro-pop. Again prduced by SAW, this one features great songs including "Hand On Your Heart", "Wouldn't Change A Thing", and "Never Too Late". Only a few dull moments on this one, including "Tell Tale Signs" (this sounds like it should be sung in a Las Vegas lounge, not a pop record), and another 60's cover, this one being "Tears On My Pillow". All in all, though, a satisfying cd.

RHYTHM OF LOVE---Again short (44 minutes), this one shows Kylie trying to break ties with SAW (they produce 7 of the 11 tracks instead of all of them like the first 2)and (sometimes) lyric-writing. Good songs on this one include "Better The Devil You Know" (which was covered by The Steps in 1999)and the disco-sounding "Step Back In Time".

So there you have it...not a bad set to start your Kylie collection, but, in my opinion, her best are "Fever" and the impressive "Light Years". Check those out, too. I can't wait to see what she puts out next!

5.0 out of 5 stars Two hours of Kylie magic - highly entertaning, October 3, 2002
This review is from: Kylie Minogue x3 (Audio CD)
In 1980's Britain, the most successful pop record producers were the team of Stock, Aitken and Waterman. Many of their singers faded from popularity as quickly as they emerged, leaving a legacy of doubtful importance. A few did rise above the rest, including Bananarama, a lovely trio, but the star which shone the brightest was Kylie.

The three albums in this set were Kylie's first three albums. They include all her early hits except Especially for you - a stunning duet with Jason Donovan, originally released on one of his albums, but also available on Kylie hit compilations.

Nobody who was around in Britain in the late eighties will ever forget the chorus line of her first hit (one of several British #1 records) - I should be so lucky, lucky, lucky, lucky - it's the kind of song you either love or hate. Many hate it, and I sometimes feel I ought to - but no, I love it !!!! There was always something about Kylie, even then, that set her apart as something special.

The first two albums in this set were produced entirely by Stock, Aitken and Waterman, who wrote all the songs except for Locomotion (the Little Eva sixties classic) and Tears on my pillow (the Little Anthony fifties classic). These two covers helped to convince me that Kylie should be taken seriously - they are both brilliant. Indeed, Locomotion provided Kylie with her only huge American hit during this period. As to Tears on my pillow, I've heard several versions. Kylie should be proud of her cover, which gave her another huge UK hit. Je ne sais pas porqoui (an English language song despite it's chorus line), Got to be certain, Hand on your heart and Wouldn't change a thing were among the other UK hits from these albums.

The third and final album of this set has a different feel to it. Kylie wrote four of the songs herself, which were not produced by Stock Aitken and Waterman, although they did write and produce the other seven songs, including the biggest hit here, Better the devil you know. Anybody familiar with Kylie's excellent Light years album will see some of it's roots here.

While many will continue to dismiss Kylie (especially these early albums), she is much better than many of the singers she is sometimes compared to, and has proved it by lasting longer than any of her critics thought possible.

5.0 out of 5 stars ...Great!!, November 17, 2001
By
Cindy Keller (Pasadena, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Kylie Minogue x3 (Audio CD)
This is the first three albums from Kylie Minogue, not her recent
FEVER, including the brilliant NO.1, Can't Get You Out of My Head.
This box set includes her first smash hit I Should Be So Lucky,
and others including : Got To Be Certain, Better The Devil You Know, Je Ne Sais Pas Pourquoi, Step Back In Time etc.
Kylie Minogue, now 33, is a fantastic performer and is renowned
for her poppy melodies which have been delighting the world since
1988. She used to be in soap orea Neighbours, playing Charlene,
but left to pursue music, and these CDs show she made the right choice. She's absolutely brilliant! Stock Aiken Waterman are the
producers. Kylie! Kylie! Kylie! Kylie!!
Queen Kylie! Long may she reign! Hits such as Spinning Around,
Kids, Please Stay, and Confide In Me are NOT included in this
box set. I recommend that you get all of her albums, because they
are all great, even the experimental one of 1997 Impossible Princess which is really very different to this box set.
Anyway, a true ***** set.
