5.0 out of 5 stars Sensational specialized tool July 23, 2009
Size Name:6-1/2-Inch|Amazon Verified Purchase
I had ordered the smaller version of this which my cat promptly knocked off the counter and broke. That was kind of a blessing, since I ordered this larger size and it's MUCH easier to use than the small version. No more gumming up your box grater trying to prepare ginger. It's easy to use, well-designed (catches all the juice) and easy to clean. It has a rubber ring on the bottom so it stays put. Really an essential tool for the home cook.

5.0 out of 5 stars I can grate ginger again! January 23, 2010
Size Name:6-1/2-Inch
I was given this grater as a gift, and I cannot begin to tell you what a wonderful job it does on ginger. I have arthritis in my hands and wrists and had found it increasingly difficult to grate ginger for Soboro, one of our favorite recipes. With this grater I need to use very little pressure and I get spectacular results. It cuts the amount of time down to a quarter of the time it took when I was using a microplane grater, and as an added bonus I found the juice clearer, with less of the "milky" quality I was getting before. It's a dream to clean, too. It's dishwasher safe, but just a quick rinse under running water got rid of all the remaining fibers. I cannot rate this grater highly enough. I'd give it 10 stars if I could. I can't wait to try grating an onion to add to guacamole...!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for grating foods for my baby April 25, 2008
By L
Size Name:6-1/2-Inch|Amazon Verified Purchase
I am using it to grate apples and pears for my 7-months-old. It works great! Apples are "strained". I am very happy with this purchase, even though it is not cheap. I would recommend it, it is much better to use, especially for babies.

5.0 out of 5 stars works great, easy to clean, non-slip bottom March 23, 2009
Size Name:3-1/2-Inch|Amazon Verified Purchase
I looked at a number of these graters before choosing this one, and some might be better suited to specific purposes other than grating ginger (someone mentioned cheese on one review, and wished it was bigger), but this is a perfect size for me needs. It grates the ginger much faster than I expected, the teeth are very effective, and the non-stick ring on the bottom is great, the thing stays in place very well while you are grating.

5.0 out of 5 stars Japanese Grater June 5, 2009
By Jobbes
Size Name:6-1/2-Inch
Have you ever wondered how to grate wasabi, daikon radish and ginger the same way authentic japanese restaurants do? Well here is the answer.

This grater is awesome, I first learned about this grater when I had a small dinner party with some Japanese friends. One of them brought this grater to grate daikon radish. It was so simple to use and clean up was a breeze. Just place under running hot water and voila, all done.

Since this grater is ceramic, you wouldn't have to worry about rust/stains and food contamination. If you dig japanese or asian food in general, this would be one of those good handy tools you should have in your kitchen. I bought two and gave one as a present!

3.0 out of 5 stars It's okay October 13, 2012
Size Name:6-1/2-Inch|Amazon Verified Purchase
This a really well made grater but I was not too thrilled with its performance; but granted, it is better than the normal processes to obtain ginger pulp.

Fortunately, the same day I received it I found an EXCELLENT way to get better results:

Take a good quality garlic press and fill the basket on the press with THIN, UNPEELED slices of ginger. Simply squeeze it like pressing garlic and VOILA!!!....lots of ginger juice and peel-free pulp! Actually, you can get EVEN MORE pulp and juice if you go the "extra mile" and scrape the peeling off with a spoon or the edge of a knife.

I use this method at least twice a day and it is just a great way to get the ginger.

5.0 out of 5 stars No more stringy ginger! July 20, 2010
Size Name:6-1/2-Inch|Amazon Verified Purchase
This grater is awesome. The main advantages of this grater over a microplane grater or a box grater are:

1. It's much easier to apply force as you are able to use your upper body to press down on the food you are grating instead of going at it from the side, as is the case with a box grater.

2. It makes a nice pulp of the food bring grated and without cutting the food. In the case of ginger for example, after grating the root on this grater, you are left with grated ginger and juice nicely collected in the ring around the grater and in your hand will be the part of the root you were holding and attached to that, the long stringy fibers in the root, not in your food. Microplanes and box graters cut the ginger, fibers and all, and don't do an excellent job of collecting the juice either

As long as the rubber ring on the bottom is kept dry, it is extremely grippy and won't move as long as a tiny bit of pressure is applied.

One negative about the grater is the amount of food that is still left in the teeth. It's not a problem with cleaning it, because it comes right off with water. But if you actually need that food it's extremely difficult to get out without running it under water. Running a knife or other thin object through the teeth is too tedious and scrapping it off with your finger is too painful. I suppose the answer is to grate more food than you think will be necessary. If anyone has a simple solution to this minor problem, feel free to comment.

Works better than expected. Was using the garlic press but had to run the ginger through more than once to get all of the juice. This was quick and easy. Easy clean up too.
