Product Description

Color: Blue

Kyocera's "Y" hand peeler is a favorite for fruits and vegetables. The double ceramic edge is second only to diamonds in sharpness and holds it's edge 10 times longer than stainless. A molded handle makes it easy to grip. You'll cut prep time and find that your peeler lasts through countless years of kitchen use. To clean, simply rinse the blade with warm water and pat dry. Blade: advanced ceramic. Dishwasher safe.

1.0 out of 5 stars Good blade, but poor design and FRAGILE October 14, 2008
Color Name:Black
I have a Kyocera ceramic chef's knife that I have been using for about 7 years as my primary kitchen knife and I've never had to sharpen it. It is almost as sharp now as the day I bought it. Needless to say, I love that knife. About two months ago, I found myself in need of a new peeler, and given my fondness for the Kyocera knife, decided to give this ceramic peeler a try. Sadly, it really is not the same class of utensil.

I use the peeler primarily for zesting citrus fruits for use in cocktails, and the ceramic blade handled that job reasonably well. The plastic channel zesters on either side of the blade (for making, say, a lemon twist) are basically worthless. I already had an OXO tool for that purpose, so no worries. But yesterday, after maybe 10 uses in 2 months, the plastic frame that holds the blade snapped into three pieces, rendering the whole thing useless. I'll be replacing it with the OXO Y-Peeler.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for certain vegetables January 23, 2012
By Alrian
Color Name:Black
I love this peeler for some vegetables; I hate it for others.
The sharp edge gets through the tough skins of butternut squash like nothing else I've ever used. It's pretty good for mangoes too. I don't much like it for carrots and cucumbers, as the peel tends to flip around and get caught back under the blade. I also don't like it for potatoes, as it's hard to use this peeler while drawing the blade away from my fingers. I either drop the spud or unconsciously rotate the blade until I find myself pulling towards my fingers instead of away. The blade is so sharp you don't even feel the cut at first...
I'd recommend this peeler if you need to peel large, round, tough skinned fruits and veggies. I'd stick with a conventional peeler for long, thin veggies and for all but the largest potatoes.

I use this primarily for heavy duty peeling--things like sweet potatoes & yams, with heavy skins. On those, it does a truly superb job. For produce with thin peels--carrots, apples, regular potatoes and even cukes, it's overkill, taking too much of the product with the peel. I use a high-end stainless steel peeler for those.

Hand wash, cleaning the blade with an old toothbrush or a corner of one of the slightly gritty Mr. Clean type sponges. Don't put this in the dishwasher if you want to keep that razor-sharp ceramic blade at its best.

After five years, my original purchase is still going strong. This one was a gift, and while I noticed that the angle of the handle is slightly different when I used it at the recipient's house, I think it will give equally good service.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice peeler December 16, 2008
By San
Color Name:Black
I've had this peeler for a few months now, and I'm quite happy with it. The blade is always sharp and won't rust, the handle is comfortable, and you don't need to use a lot of pressure to peel stuff. The loops at the sides make it easy to remove eyes and weird spots on vegetables.

The plastic of the handle isn't invincible - I bought the same peeler for my mother and it broke when she accidentally closed a drawer on it. She intends on getting the same peeler to replace it, though, so she really likes it too. (Her exact words were, "It makes the veggies look so clean!")

Overall, it's a nice peeler to have in the kitchen.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's okay, but... September 25, 2008
Color Name:Black|Amazon Verified Purchase
I purchased this item because of a review I saw in the local newspaper. I just can't get used to it because it is so lightweight. It does a good job, but peelings get stuck in the blade area frequently and have to be rinsed out. I honestly have been using my old OXO.

3.0 out of 5 stars not impressed April 26, 2006
By R. Ma
Color Name:Red
the blade on my OXO swivel peeler was getting dull (had for 5-7 years). Considered getting replacement blades for OXO, but gave this a try...not impressed. Where the OXO would cut cleanly using a straight stroke, the kyocera would not cut on a straight stroke. Using a sheering stroke, it cut better, but not as well as the OXO, The true test was peeling a soft fruit like a kiwi or peach. It was very hard to peel with the kyocera, and very easy with the OXO.

Wanting to give this every chance, I thought there might be a difference between the handle design (pull versus push), so I snipped some of the plastic from the OXO handle to accept the kyocera blade - but no difference. I'm going back to OXO...

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy peeling January 7, 2013
Color Name:Orange|Amazon Verified Purchase
The ceramic edge peels even hard to peel veggies like Kohlrabi quickly and easily. I had trouble with my last ceramic peeler when it began spinning. this has a small stop on both sides to prevent that from happening.

2.0 out of 5 stars Weak design as others have posted November 13, 2012
By EFlyGuy
Color Name:Blue
Mine broke in the same way as described by others. Also, the blade housing had broken a while ago, I was able to glue that back together. It was a really great tool while it worked but weak design means I can't recommend it.

Where do I begin? The blade swivels way too much and doesn’t “grip” the skin of the vegetable/fruit. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent ceramic peeler
Not much to say here. The blade's sharp, it cuts straight, and the handle isn't fiddly or anything. Eyer could be sharper and larger though.

This is the second peeler like this we have had. It is the best potato peeler I've ever used. It slices through the skin so easily and makes the job very fast.
