About the Author

Ogamo Rebecca Teele, Kongoh Noh Licensed Instructor, born in Michigan, USA, June 3, 1949, majored in drama at Bennington College, Vermont. She started training in Noh of the Kongo School and Noh mask carving with Master Actor Udaka Michishige in 1972. In 1980 she was certified as a Licensed Instructor of the Kongo School of Noh and in 1996 she became the first foreigner to become a member of the Noh Association where she is registered as Ogamo Rebecca. She is the Associate Director of the International Noh Institute and is involved in teaching utai (Noh chant), shimai (Noh dance), and mask carving and lecturing on Noh. Actively engaged in increasing interest in and deepening a true understanding of Noh abroad, she has presented workshops and demonstrations, as well as giving lecutres and taking part in conferences in the USA, Brazil, New Zealand, and Poland. Among her published works is Ono-No-Komachi, with her father and brother, and Women in Noh Today. Following her first Noh performance in 1976 of Hagoromo, she has performed Tomoe,Hashitomi, Makigami, Kazuraki: Kagura-shiki and the Aoi-no-une tusere role in Kiyotsune. In 2003, she was awarded the Kyoto Prefecture Akebono Prize.
