The mustard's description is incorrect. Correct name is "Lowensenf extra" (and not Lowensenf extra hot) - "extra" is Latin and means "special" (short version of "extra consuetudinem" which means "extraordinary"). Lowensenf extra has a red label and is spicy (hot). It was the first product, which Mr. Frenzel (founder of Lowensenf) introduced to the market in 1920.

Later they offered Lowensenf medium (dark green label) and Lowensenf bayerisch suss (bavarian sweet) with a blue label plus several other products.

If you should ever come to Dusseldorf, where the company has been located since WW I, then visit their shop in the old town incl. a small "mustard museum". These days Lowensenf is part of Bavarian company DEVELEY, but still producing in Dusseldorf.

Lowensenf has been producing for different markets all over the world and the products are a little different. The original German version is more hot than the export version, because Germans have eaten mustard on a "hotter" level than other nations have done; especially France (Dijon mustard).

So you only get the original Lowensenf extra when there is a red label with complete German description on it.

Lowensenf is produced without any preservatives, the normal best-before date is about five months, when you buy it in Germany. I think, that a lot of time has run down by transporting, before you can get it here in the US - so watch the imprint!

In my opinion it is not important, whether it tastes more or less hot. Most important for me is the special mustard taste, which the Lowensenf company created.

P.S.: Give your pork roast or roast beef a Lowensenf massage and then roast it. You will be surprised.

I had originally found this mustard at an Italian import store in Tucson and introduced it to family and friends. Almost everyone loved it. The exceptions were those people who don't like hot foods and even they liked it in moderation. The import store was having trouble stocking it, so I turned to the internet. I use it to coat homemade French bread dough when making calzones. I also use it as part of the marinade when cooking pork loin. For myself, I use it on sandwiches and hot dogs but I really like the horseradish taste.

I had been searching for a good German mustard to remind me of the sandwiches I used to buy there as a U.S. Airman, way back in another life. I have finally found it; Lowensenf Extra Hot is the real deal. I bought one jar, then bought four more. It gives one that wonderful bite (well, wonderful if you like hot food) and makes your hair hurt a few seconds after it explodes in your mouth. One note though - it seems to need to be refrigerated before achieving full ignition; don't use it right out of the pantry.

This is the best mustard on the planet. Bar none. It packs a powerful, zesty punch. Despite its strength, it enhances the flavor of my melted cheese bagels. It is a given that when friends or relatives visit us from Germany, they bring along a couple jars of this superb condiment.

I have used this product for years. It is the best mustard I have ever had. Great on or in anything you would use regular mustard with.

This mustard is not nearly as spicy as the authentic product from Germany which I have tried. This seems like an "Americanized" version which I would not purchase again in the future.

It's good mustard, don't get me wrong--it has a good bite, and the texture is very smooth. Tangy and just a slight bit of horseradish aftertaste, it's pretty good, taste-wise. But honestly, there is nothing spicy about this mustard. I can eat teaspoons of it at a clip and barely feel a bit of bite. Either I have a bad batch, or I have become some sort of human fire extinguisher. If you are looking for hot mustard, I would recommend something else.
