Book Description

March 25, 2009
From its humble beginnings in 1934, L.A.'s Original Farmers Market has become one of the leading destinations in Southern California. And this comprehensive cookbook celebrates the food, people, and history of this Los Angeles landmark. Mexican, Brazilian, Middle Eastern, and old-fashioned American diner fare are all here, among many others. Readers can re-create more than 75 stand-in-line classics like Chilaquiles Verdes from Lotera! Grill, Falafel Sandwiches from Moishe's, and finish up with decadent Chocolate Fudge from Littlejohn's English Toffee House. Vivid photographs and rare archival images bring the market to life as it celebrates its 75th anniversary.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

At the L.A. Farmers Market, shoppers can select from the best farm-fresh goods representative of Southern California's bounty, but the market, a favorite among tourists and locals almost since its 1934 founding, also hosts dozens of small restaurants, bakeries and stalls selling prepared food. In time for the market's 75th anniversary Cianciulli, a food writer and Food Network producer, collects recipes from 48 of these eateries, some that have been around since the market's beginning or close to it, others more recent and reflective of L.A.'s diverse, ever-changing population. Cianciulli divides the book into four categories (breakfast, sandwiches and light bites, main meals and desserts), with such dishes as La Korea's Korean-style short ribs, a Middle Eastern falafel sandwich at Moishe's and Breadworks' toothsome Hungarian cinnamon loaf. Cianciulli prefaces recipes from each place with a brief history, an introduction to the lively owners and an evocative description of the atmosphere it generates, so reading feels like a walk down the bustling market aisles. Though most of the recipes use ingredients available from the farm stands, the farmers and the ideal of sourcing food locally are not the book's focal point, which may disappoint some readers. Most, however, will be thrilled to have access to such a wide array of favorite recipes and to help celebrate the long life of this vibrant institution. (May)

More About the Author

JOANN CIANCIULLI
Cookbook Author & Culinary Producer
www.dirtydishesmedia.com

Cook, culinary producer, and author, JoAnn Cianciulli (chan-chew-lee) has become known as one of the culinary industry's top insiders. A pioneer in her field, Cianciulli's experience ranges from co-creating and producing groundbreaking Food Network shows such as Food 911 with Tyler Florence, co-authoring cookbooks with world-renowned chefs like Michael Mina, serving as an industry expert on television shows including Bravo's Top Chef Masters and most recently, as author of L.A.'s Original Farmers Market Cookbook and the Master Chef Cookbook.

A witty, whirling-dervish hailing from New York, Cianciulli grew up in an Italian-American restaurant family where she began her appreciation for food when her father Dominic took over acclaimed chef/restaurateur Lidia Bastianich's first restaurant, Buonavia, in Queens. Translated, the restaurant name means, "the good way," which has become Cianciulli's mantra ever since.

Cianciulli earned her stripes in the world of culinary media in the same fashion that great chefs achieve theirs: from the ground up. After studying at NYU's prestigious Tisch School of the Arts for her BFA in Film and Television, Cianciulli relocated to Los Angeles to work in feature film production. It was long before she created her niche of the delicious combination of cooking and entertainment.

With over 10 years of experience in producing food television, Cianciulli fed America's growing appetite for celebrity chefs and combined her culinary expertise with television production experience to create a new generation of cooking shows. Cianciulli was instrumental in creating the food television phenomenon as it exists today via her role as producer for innovative Food Network programming such as the wildly popular series Food 911 with Tyler Florence, Tyler's Ultimate, Simply Delicioso with Ingrid Hoffmann and Next Iron Chef.

In addition to over 1,000 episodes filmed with the now-iconic network, Cianciulli has completed production of MasterChef with Gordon Ramsay debuting on FOX Tuesday July 27th, which she complemented by writing the cookbook to launch with the series. She has also produced shows such as Bravo's hit series Top Chef Los Angeles, the NBC primetime special Celebrity Cooking Showdown, Shopping with Chefs on Fine Living and the celebrated chef-competition series Cooking Under Fire on PBS, which Cianciulli complemented by writing and editing the companion cookbook to launch with the show. Taking her telegenic personality and to-the-point culinary expertise to the next level, Cianciulli has also appeared on-camera as a food authority and personal chef on TLC's For Better or for Worse and was an invited guest panelist on Bravo's newest series, Top Chef Masters.

It is her reputation and connections made during her tenure with such successful television productions that led to high profile cookbook collaborations including Tyler Florence's Real Kitchen, Aaron Sanchez's Latino cookbook, La Comida del Barrio, the Lever House Cookbook with chef Dan Silverman and the acclaimed debut book for James Beard Award-winning chef Michael Mina. She is currently co-authoring Michael's Genuine Food & Drink with Miami star chef Michael Schwartz.

Cianciulli's fusion of writing, recipe structure, vast culinary knowledge and an intimate understanding of the creative complexity of chefs has uniquely positioned her as a pioneer who has created a new genre of food personality for the 21st century. An accomplished gourmet in her own right, Cianciulli's greatest gift is her innate ability to translate the intricate passion of a chef to an accessible and appealing concept for the home viewer or reader.

Although a die hard New Yorker, Cianciulli has lived in Los Angeles for over a decade because juicy tomatoes are available year round.

Imagine if you will, having the chance to sample some of the freshest and best cuisine from all over the world; a French Fondue Savoyarde, some Mexican Chilaquiles Verdes, Singapore's Mee Goreng, or some Korean Kalbi. The passport and travel tickets alone might be enough to break the bank. Unless, of course, you live in Los Angeles and want to `meet me at 3rd and Fairfax' where for 76 years this month, culinary patrons from the world over have gathered at the dozens of homegrown eateries that comprise L.A.'s Farmers Market.

Now, through the efforts of author and Food TV producer, JoAnn Cianciulli (and Bay Area food photographer Karl Petzke), Chronicle Books has assembled some of the best recipes from the legendary vendors into one book of international and domestic delights called "L.A.'s Original Farmers Market Cookbook."

Unlike most cookbooks that rely on one particularly style or a single chef's output, the Farmers Market Cookbook combines dishes for every meal - including snacks and desserts - from a veritable cornucopia of chefs, genres, styles and nationalities - all blended together to replicate what a visit through the aisles of the legendary marketplace are like in real life.

In addition to the recipes, there are the storied histories of each of the featured vendors, some of which date back to the origin of the market that now resides on the old Gilmore Oil fields and is one of L.A.'s official Historical and Cultural Landmarks (second only to Hollywood itself.) While the book serves as a great cookbook for those seeking a wide variety of casual comestibles, it also aptly describes the history of the famed location, from its origin as dairy land to its hangout status for famous names like Sinatra, James Dean, Garbo and more, to its current day adjacency to both CBS's Television City and the high-profile shopping plaza, The Grove.

If you can't make it around the world, or even out to L.A., the Farmers Market Cookbook is the next best thing to being there. Otherwise, `meet us at 3rd and Fairfax' soon. See you there!

5.0 out of 5 stars A FEAST...From Cover to Cover! May 18, 2009
Format:Paperback
Having visited The Market 5 years ago from the east coast, I immediately fell in love with the place. There's no other like it! This book brought me back again, but in a more exciting way. The recipes are terrific. Visually, it's a treat for the eyes. More than anything though, Cianciulli captures the flavor, history & significance of LA's original farmers market. Expect great things from this author! At this price, not only a feast; it's a steal. Brava!
