5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect power pop!, November 1, 2006
This review is from: L (Audio CD)
I know, "perfect" is a strong word. But "L" by The Caulfields comes very close! Here, on their second and final release, the four guys from Philadelphia showcase great melodies, energy, lyrics and variety.
The opening cuts, "Figure it Out" and "President of Nothing" have strong sing-along refrains and set the tone for witty, sarcastic anger that runs throughout. But it's always delivered with great harmony and sincerity by John Faye...rarely do you feel like you're being screamed at. Rather, the Caulfields know how to put that hurt feeling to great, catchy music.
Deeper into the album, things get a lil serious, with "Atlas Daughter" lamenting the dad who has little time for the kid, and "Tomorrow Morning" suggesting a brother's care for his sister's happiness. All of these tracks feature clever wordplay and incorporate fresh guitar sounds and other instruments. This sort of alt-rock was all the rage in the late 90's and years on, listening to "L" will suggest a time when pop music was better!

4.0 out of 5 stars Another brilliant masterpiece from John Faye and Company, August 21, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: L (Audio CD)
"L" is a strong follow-up to The Caulfield's first album, Whirligig. This CD is a powerful combo of music and poetry lead by Singer/Songwriter John Faye's intense lyrics and searing vocals. Get ready to let your senses go as you listen to the melodies of such favorites as "Figure it Out" and "President of Nothing", and check out Mike Simpson's catchy riffs on "The Kitchen Debate" and "Beard of Bees". The music is grounded with the solid rhythym section of bassist Sam Musumeci and drummer Ritchie Rubini. Wow, you guys at A&M sure let a gem slip by with this band.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Band, August 21, 2010

Just listened to this album again and though I have a stronger connection to their first album, this is a GREAT album. John Faye is a tremendous talent. If you like guitar oriented rock/pop with smart lyrics, buy it now.
